This invention relates to improvements in manifolding devices, such as various forms of typewriting and billing machines, and with reference to some of the more special features thereof it relates to improvements in control for the transfer or carbon sheets, including improved means for placing and maintaining the latter in correct position with reference to the record sheets or strips.
It is a general object of the invention to provide, in devices of the class'mentioned, an improved arrangement for controlling and placing the transfer sheets in correct transfer positions between the record strips and for shifting the 1 transfer sheets from one trans fer position to another upon the record strips. The record strips ordinarily are of the long continuous traveller type, such as are commonly employed in various forms of writing machines, billing machines and the like.
A further and more particular object of the invention is to provide,for use in connection with machines of the class mentioned, an improved transfer sheet placer or placer unit having improved features of construction whereby as many of the placer units as desired may be interleaved with the record strips and introduced into the writing machine. According to this feature of the invention, but a single transfer placer unit may be interleaved between two record strips so as to form a complete operative unit and if it is desired to use additional record strips for the reception of transferred inscriptions, additional placer units may be in- 5 troduced between the respective record strips in superposed manifolding relation with each other.
Still another object of the invention is to provide an improved transfer placer unit which 40 may be simply and inexpensively manufactured,
while at the same time said unit is capable of very satisfactory use in writing machines of existing construction with very little alteration thereof. According to another feature of the invention,
the improved transfer placer units are inter--' changeable with each other so that a different character of transfer sheets may be substituted, one for another, as desired. By means of this improved arrangement it is a very easy matter, for'example, to substitute a transfer sheet or transfer placer unit for another of a different color or size, or for another having different selective transfer areas.-
It is another object of the invention to provide an improved controlling and checking attachment for writing machines of the class mentioned, constructed and arranged for cooperation with the transfer placer unit so as to position the transfer sheet correctly between the record strips and to check the advancement of the transfer sheet with the record strips after a predetermined advancement thereof. Other objects of the invention will be in part pointed out in the following detailed description of an illustrative but preferred embodiment of the invention and will be in part obvious in connection therewith.
The invention accordingly comprises the features of construction, combinations of elements,
and arrangement of parts, which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter set. forth and the scope of the application of which will be indicated in the claims.
For a more complete understanding of the nature and objects of the invention, reference is had to the following description and to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary vertical longitudinal section, partially diagrammatic, of a typewriting machine of the rotary cylindrical platen type and equipped with the invention;
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary perspective view of the, record-controlling and checking attachment and Fig. 3 is a detailed plan of one of the improved transfer placer units.
Reference is now made to the drawing for a detailed description of the illustrated embodiment of the invention there shown, which includes a transfer placer unit designated as a whole by the reference 6. Although this placer unit is best disclosed as a separate element in Fig. 3, its cooperative relation with other elements is best seen in Fig. 1.
The carbon or transfer sheet '7 may be of .any known preferred construction, the sheet shown having transfer material 8 on one side only, while the opposite side thereof is clean and free of transfer material, and it'may be of any desired size and proportions.
Attached to the transfer sheet '7 is the transfer sheet placer shown herein in the form of a transfer sheet! and placer sheet 9 are shown as integral continuations of each other, it will be understood that the placer sheet 9 need not be provided with transfer material since it is not used to perform a transfer function. Therefore, both sides of the placer sheet 9 may be clean and free of transfer material. a a
Positioned in the transfer placer unit 6 intermediate the transfer sheet 7 and the placer sheet 9 is a passageway slot 11 which is elongated and extends transversely of the placer, as shown. The passageway slot 11 terminates at each end adjacent the attaching part 10 and a marginal reinforcement 12 is preferably provided for this passageway slot. The reinforcement 12 may be of 'any desired material, a light fabric or cloth being satisfactory for this purpose and being attached to the placer unit by means of an adhesive, as shown, or it may be stitched to the placer or otherwise attached, as desired. It is desirable also that the fabric reinforcement 12 be glazed or impregnated, or both, such as cambric or trac- W ing cloth, so as to offer little or no frictional resistance to movement upon the record strips. The marginal reinforcement preferably extends entirely across the placer unit, being slotted to register with the passageway slot 11 and having end reinforcing parts 13 pasted or similarly attached to the attaching parts 10.
As shown, the placer sheet 9 is'slightly wider than the carbon sheet so as to provide for sufficient length. of the slot 11 for the passageway of the record strips S which ordinarily are about the same width as the transfer sheets. This arrangement provides for the offsets or shoulders 14 between the transfer sheet proper and the placer sheet 9. It will be understood, moreover, that it is feasible for some purposes to make the placer sheet 9 somewhat narrower at parts thereof than its extreme width in alignment with the length of the slot 11. At its rear end the transfer placer unit is provided with a checking strip of light fibre board or similar material and having oppositely laterally disposed checking lugs 15 positioned laterally beyond the respective adjacent edges of the placer sheet 9. These checking lugs 15 in the embodiment shown are attached in position by folding the rearward end of the placer 9 around the cardboard checking strip to form the attaching loop 16 and securing it in position by pasting, stitching, or by other appropriate means.
As shown in Fig. 1, the typewriting machine i is provided with a rotary cylindrical platen 17 and a feed table or record guiding apron 18 is mounted adjacent to the platen, having its forward end spaced from but following the contour of the cylindrical platen surface. Pressure feed rolls 19 which may be of preferred standard con-- struction' and arrangement are positioned for pressing the record strips into contact with the platen surface. A forward rotation of the platen 17 functions to feed the record forwardly and reverse rotation to feed it rearwardly. The platen 17 may be mounted in a manner known in the art to release the feeding grip upon the record strips when desired. One of the type bars 20 of the machine is shown in position to contact the writing line.
A record guide and check 21 is shown as a plate of appropriate material, such as light metal. At its forward end the record guide 21 has upwardly turnedlugs 22 spaced apart laterally upon the plate. As shown, these stop lugs are conveniently integral with the plate 21 and are connected by vice for attaching the guide plate to the typea writer apron 18.
As shown, the record strips S are of the long continuous traveller type and may be constructed in the usual manner, having blank forms spaced there-along, separated by transverse weakened lines along which these strips may be severed. These record strips may be assembled in different manners to provide the supply but it is convenient' to fold them transversely at intervals in zig-zag formation to provide the zig-zag folded supply pack S'..
In use, one or more of the transfer placer units 6 is interleaved in manifolding relation between two adjacent record strips, as clearly shown in Fig. .1. Since each placer unit is a separate and independent element, as many units may be thus assembled with a number of record strips as desired. For convenience, two such placer units are shown in Fig. 1 and the showing is somewhat diagrammatic, the different strips and sheets being shown as spaced apart some little distance in order to disclose the construction and relation. In assembling the placer unit with the record strips it will be noticed that said rec--' ord strips are passed through the passageway slot 11 of each placer unit. In Fig. 1, two of the record strips extend through the passageway 11 of the placer unit the farthest away from the platen surface, while but one record strip passes through the slot 11 of the inner placer unit. This arrangement disposes both of the placer sheets 9 outside of the record strips but it is to be observed that where desired, the inner placer sheet 9 may be interleaved between two adjacent record strips; this can be readily accomplished by threading the upper record sheet S between the two placer sheets 9 instead of passing it through the slot 11. of the placer unit remote from the platen. Either manner of threading the placer units in position is found satisfactory in use.
With the improved construction of the record placer unit it will be observed that but a single passageway for the record strip is required in each unit. It will be observed, furthermore, that placer units may be added as desired so as to effect transfer inscription on as many record strips as required for the particular work in hand. Also, it is a very simple matter to substitute one placer unit for another in case one becomes damaged or worn. Also, placer units having carbon sheets of different colors may be used and the colors may be arranged and substituted one for another as desired, and almost any desired selective transfer inscription upon the different record strips can be accomplished merely by using placer units having selectively arranged transfer areas.
When the record strips and placer umts have been assembled as described, they are introduced v 1,992,544 the placer units moving forwardly, together with the record strips. When the writing is completed the platen may be rotated to bring the checking lugs 15 into contact with the stop lugs 22 of the plate 21, or the platen may be released before such supplemental feeding movement and the record assembly pulled forwardly manually around the platen until the placer units are checked by inter-engagement of the checking lugs 15 and 22. This engagement of the checking lugs checks further advancement of the placer units, while the record strips S may continue to advance until the next succeeding writing areas or blank forms are in alignment with the carbon sheets 7. The forwardly fed inscribed record sheet forms or sheets may then be severed along an appropriate tearing edge or along the weakened severance lines of the record strips. The record assembly, including the placer units, may be fed or adjusted rearwardly by reversely rotating the platen 1'7, thus bringing the forward ends of the new record sheet forms at the writing line.
The operation then continues for another cycle. Since each placer unit is provided with its own individual checking lugs 15, the checking operation of each unit takes place independently of the others, or, in other words, each placer unit is individually checked. The length of the passageway 24 or the distance between the checking lugs 22 is less than the distance between the lugs 15 of each placer unit, whereby the latter are engaged by the former as the placer unit moves forwardly. Also, the placer sheet of each unit is suificiently narrow to pass freely between the checking lugs 22. While the placer sheets 9 may, as shown, be of the same weight of material as the carbon sheets '7, yet they can be made of heavier or even lighter material.
-Since certain changes may be made in the above construction and different embodiments of the invention .could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawing shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by said Letters Patent is:
1. A transfer placer unit having but a single transfer sheet and a placer sheet, said transfer sheet forming a longitudinal continuation of said placer-sheet beyond the forward terminal of the latter, said unit having a single record passageway slot extending transversely thereof and positioned intermediate the transfer and placer sheets, said transfer and placer sheets being integral with each other, and a marginal reinforcement for saidpassageway slot.
2. In a manifolding machine, in combination, a transfer placer unit having but a single transfer sheet and a placer sheet, said unit having 9. record passageway slot, and having checking lugs spaced rearwardly of the placer sheet from'the passageway slot and spaced apart laterally further than the width of the placer sheet and a checking device for said placer unit having a slot as long as the width of said placer sheet for receiving the latter, and having spaced lugs adjacent the ends of said slot positioned for checking cooperation with said checking lugs.
3. A transfer placer unit having but a single transfer sheet and a placer sheet, said unit having a record passageway slot, and having checking lugs spaced rearwardly of the placer sheet from the passageway slot and spaced apart laterally further than the width of the placer sheet, said transfer and placer sheets forming parts of the same continuous sheet, and the transfer sheet being narrower than the placer sheet and continuing forwardly from the forward-terminal of the latter.
4. A transfer placer unit composed of a single sheet having a transfer section and a placer section in tandem formation, said sections being integral parts of the sheet, said unit also having one or more unit-checking lugs and a slot extending transversely of the unit adapted for passage of a record strip in superposed relation with each of said sections.
5. A transfer placer ,unit having a carbon transfer sheet and a placer sheet forming a longitudinal continuation of said transfer sheet, said unit having a record passageway slot extending transversely thereof and positioned intermediate the transfer and placer sheets, said transfer and placer sheets forming parts of the same continuous sheet, and said transfer sheet continuing forwardly from the forward terminal of the placer sheet.
6. A manifold assembly including, in combination, a plurality of continuous traveler record strips, and a plurality of separate transfer placer units in superposed relation with each other and interleaved in superposed transfer relation with the record strips, each placer unit having a transfer sheet and a placer sheet therefor united together in tandem formation, and each having a passageway intermediate said sheets through which one or more of said record sheets pass.
7. A manifold assembly including, in combination, a plurality of continuous traveler record strips, and a plurality of separate transfer placer units in superposed relationwith each other and interleaved in superposed transfer relation with the record strips, each placer unit having a. transfer sheet and a placer sheet therefor united together, and having a passageway intermediate said sheets throughwhich one or more of said record sheets pass, and each of said placer-units having a separate check spaced rearwardly of the respective passageway.
8. A manifold assembly including, in combination, a plurality of continuous traveler record strips, and a plurality of separate transfer placer units in superposed relation with each other and interleaved in superposed transfer relation with the record strips, each placer unit having a transfer sheet and a placer sheet therefor, and each having a single passageway intermediate its ends through which one or more of the record strips passes.
9. In a manifolding machine, in combination, means for supporting for travelling movement a plurality of relatively superposed record strips,- at least one transfer placer unit interleaved in transfer relation with the record strips, each having a transfer sheet and a placer arranged in tandem formation and forming longitudinal continuations of each other at their adjacent terminals, and a check co-operating with said placer unit to check the latter during movement'of the record strips, each of said placer units having a pasageway intermediate the transfer sheet and its placer through which one or more of the record strips pass.
10. In a manifolding machine, in combination, means for supporting for travelling movement a plurality of relatively superposed record strips, at least one transfer placer unit interleaved in transfer relation with the record strips, and each having a transfer sheet and a placer sheet arranged in tandem formation and forming longitudinal continuations of each other at their adjacent terminals, each of said placer units having a passageway intermediate the transfer sheet and its placer sheet through which one or more of the record strips passes, check lugs on said placer sheet spaced apart laterally beyond the edges thereof and spaced rearwardly thereon from said passageway.
11. In a manifolding machine, in combination, means for supporting for travelling'movement a plurality of relatively superposed record strips, at least one transfer placer unit interleaved in transfer relation with the record strips,
and each having a transfer sheet and a placer arranged in tandem' formation and forming longitudinal continuations of each other at their adjacent terminals, and a check co-operating with said placer unit to check the latter during movement of the record strips, said check including a record guide plate attached to the machine and A BERT IRENDALL.
