In this case'the notches in-the plate, which were arranged symmetrically to thelongitudinaland transverse centre lines of the plate,
were of: the same j-lengthas-the stems of the bobbin carriers and: their edges were curved, in. exact, correspondence with the lateral surfacespf the stems, so that the'elongated stems fitted exactly over their full area in the notches of the plates; This arrangement resulted indeed in the simplest manner in-a-faultless guiding-of the bobbin'carrier, but it; was onlyzpos'sible; because. in Malheres, machine the plates were arranged not in a circle but in a straightline; The arrangement of the platesinva straight line'is however not practicable because the distance of the bobbin from the braiding point is subject to, such great change that the alterations in the free lengths. of the threads, resulting therefrom cannot be compensated. Inthe p'racticalgconstruction of the bobbin machine with driving plates (see for example German Patent 216,529 A. D. 1908 of Krenzler and the patents of addition thereto) the-provision of the bobbin carriers with elongated stems in combination with the arrangement of the plates in a circle, was therefore abandoned and bobbincarriers with circular stems were employed, while the notches in the plates were formed unsymmetrically in such a manner that their edges were'only in part curved to a circular arc of the radius of the plate and at one end on the other hand they were curved or angularly bent to a considerablysmaller radius for forming an ell'ective driving-edge. .The arrangement of the driving plates in a circle necessitates at the same time a shortening or blunting of thepointsof the track plate lying on the outside of the machine and, above all, at the places where the bobbin carriers run from the crossing place of the track towards the outside: This necessitates the arrangement of separate guidepie ces which are, adjustable l coupling sleeves or clutchesofthedriving fplates; and have to guidethe bobbin carriers withoutblunted points of the trackplate. Thus the edges of two adjacent plates, in the case of plates which are in the resting places, are contiguous on the inside of the machine to the point of "the track plate while, on the other hand, on the outside of the machine, they are at some. distance from one another, so that at this place'the notches of two adjacent plates are spaced apart to some extent similarly as in the case in a bobbin machine having bobbin carriers with circular stems. Further, in accordance alsowith theinvention the points of the track plate lying on the outside of themachine, 'at the places where the bobbins are movedfrorhthecrossihg plate of the track towards the outside are blunted or shortened in the manner which has become known in the case of machines with circular stems, so that they do not project between the adjacent end edges of the notches inthe plates. With the described'arrangement' and construction" of the driver notches, the elongated stems of the bobbin carriers do indeed nolonge'r'fit closely over their entire lengths in the plate notches and a close fit to the edges of the notches only now takes place at the ends of these edges'over about half the length of the lateral surfaces of the stems. This is, however, quite s'ufiicient for theregular guidance and movement of *the bobbin carrier. Owing to' the factthat the elongated stems are tightly guided against the driver notches on both sides for about half of their length and, although in the resting places of 'the driving plates they have play in the notches and can therefore adjust themselvesat will, they are nevertheless automatically correctly adjustedeach timea driving plate is set in'motion and adjusted with the point on that part of the track-which-belongs to the driving plate which is rotated at the time andthey are then guided round freely by' the plate. This action takes place not only on the movement of the bobbin carrier-from the crossing point inwards, i. e. at the place where an uninterrupted'guidance of the bobbin carrier is present, but also on the outside of the machine, that is to say where the guide is interrupted. "At this place the bobbin carrier stems are positively guided'by the edges of the notches in theplates-until the point which is in front in the direction of movement has passed the blunted point of 'the track plate and the further guidance can then be undertaken by the aperture in the track plate.
As will be clear, thenew machine is'oonsiderably simpler and cheaper than the known bobbin machines with elongated stems and plates arranged in a circle, since undivided rigid plates are employed. At the same time'the new machine is also simpler than theknown bobbin machines having bobbin carrier with circular stems, since, the guidingpieces, which are regulated with the coupling sleeves of the driving plates, necessary in these m'achinesfor bridging over the gaps in'the bobbin carrier guidance on the outside of the machine are entirely dispensed with. It also possesses the advantage over these machines that the arrested bobbins in the plate notches have only relatively little play. In addition the known advantage arising from the use of elongated stems is of course present, this is that wear is reduced owing to the enlargement of the sliding surfaces of the stems of the bobbin carriers. By means of the invention, therefore, owing to a happy combination of a number of quite simple features which are in part known and in part new, there is obtained a particularly advantageous form of construction of a single thread braiding or bobbin machine having bobbins with elongated stems and driving plates arranged in a circle. The essence of the invention, as a comparisonwith what has previously been proposed will show, resides in the recognition that the previous construction of the machine which operates with bobbin carriers having circular stems can'be substantially maintained when bobbin carriers having elongated stems are employed,
and. that it is only necessary to make the notches in the driving plates completely symmetrical and to adapt them as far as possible to fit the shape of the'elongated stems. The previous inventors who were concerned with the constructionof a bobbin machine having driving plates arranged in a circle and bobbin carriers with elongated stems failed to recognize this.
j The omission of the guiding pieces which are necessary in the knownbobbin machines having bobbin carriers with circular stems for bridging over the gaps in the bobbin carrier guidance on the outside of the machine is a particular ad'- vantage in those bobbin machines in which not only the connection but'also the disconnection of the couplings of the driving plates is'positively effected, and for this purpose there are provided on the/driving wheels cams for effecting the positive downward movement of the coupling sleeves or clutches whi'chw'eremo-ved upwards on being connected. In these machines the arrangement of the guide piecesoccasions special difficulty. Either the guide pieces have to be so arranged that they are normally out of their operative position and only reach their operative position on the connection of afdriv'er, which necessitates the connection of the guide-pieces. with the coupling sleeves belonging to the adjacent plates by means of crossing arms. Or the guide pieces have to be mounted on separate swinginglevers which are, I
moved counter to the coupling sleeves. If it was not desired to include this complicated arrangement then it wasnecessaryto arrange the guide pieces above the track plate, which causes difilculty in'the arrangement of the disconnecting ring which is situated at this place. The complete elimination of the guide pieces in machine in which the. coupling sleeves or clutches are positively connected and disconnected is therefore a very great simplification so that, by the combination of the new construction of the machine with the known positive regulation. of the coupling sleeves, a very advantageous form of construction of a single thread bobbin or braiding machine is obtained;
The provision of the bobbin corriers with elongated stems naturally necessitates that the upper part and the lower part of the'bobbin carrier are: relatively rotatable, as the upper part which carries the bobbin and the thread guides needs to make no rotation during the movement of the bobbin carrier over the track. For this purpose the upper part has hitherto been revolubly mounted by means of a sleeve on a vertical pin on the upper foot disc of the bobbin carrier, for
between the'notches of the adjacent'plates. The remaining'points' of the track plate, ,namelyfboth the inner points 18 and also the outer points 17a; are on the contrary unshortened. I
,The bobbin carriers for the machine have elongated stems 19 of lens-shape [or double angled cross-section. These stems are of a slightly less length than the length of the'notches 16 in the driving plates 3. Theirtwo lateral surfaces are curved to a single arc, the radius dof which corresponds to the radius of the driving plate. Thus theirlateral surfaces fit the arcs a and b of the notches in the driving plates, in sucha manner that each lateral surface of a bobbin stemis in close contact for about half its length with one end portion of the edges of the notches in the driving plates and can be closely guided for about half the length of thestem asmay,be seen from Fig. l. 3 a g g In Fig. 1. the greater part of the driving plates 3 is illustrated in the position of rest. The bobbin carriers located between the stationary plates are thus arrested at the crossing places ofthe track. Since the notches l6; in the plates are somewhat larger thanthe elongated stems 1 9,
the bobbin carriers, in their position of rest, have some play in the notches. This however is without effect on the guidance of;the bobbin carriers on their further movement. For, as .soon as a driving plate is set in motion, the stems of the two bobbin carriers to be .movedbythis plate abut with both lateral surfaces for about half the length of these surfacesbothagainst the edges of the notches-of the rotatingplate and also against the edges of the. notches of .thetwo adjacent stationary plates. Therefore, as illustrated in full lines on the right hand side of Fig. 1 they are so adjusted that the points which are front in the direction of motion are directed onto the part of the track belonging to the rotating plate and are thus positively guided into the desired part of the track. The bobbin carrier which moves to the inside of the machine has moreover anuninterruptedguidanceatthe edge of the ngtch in the stationary'plate. At. the outside of the machine this guidance is indeed lacking. At this place, however, owing to the. fact that therear half in the direction of motion of its elongated stem 19 is in close contact on both sides with the notches in the driving plates the bobbin carrier is positively guided by the plates themselves into the correct position, until its point which is in front in the. direction of motion has passed the shortened point 17 of the track plate and the bobbin carrier can now be properly guided by the aperture in the track plate. (See the posi tions illustrated at the right-hand side of Fig. l in'full lines as well as .those indicated in dotted lines). Special guide pieces for bridging over the gaps present on the outside of themachine between the edges of the notches of the plates and the edges of the apertures of the track plate are thereforenot necessary,on,the contrary the guidance of the bobbin is now exclusively ef fected by the. edges of the drivers and the edges of the apertures in the track plate. The points of the elongated stems can preferably be slightly rounded oif. This however is not necessary.
The bobbin carriers with elongated stems employed in the machine are so constructed that the carriers are able to rotate with their feet in the elongated stems. For this purpose the feet of the bobbin carrier, in accordance with Fig. 4-6, consists of two foot discs 20'and 21 and a cylindrical pin 22 which combines these andis formed in one piece with the two discs 20 and 21; Between the ,two'foot discs there are arranged one above the other two plates 23, 24, the similar outlines of which correspond to the desired outline, of the. elongated stem 19. The two .plates 23 and 24- each possess an aperture or slot 25, 26 respectively, which is open to one side, and is boundedon the inner end by circular are. They are inserted (between the two foot discs from opposite sides with theopen end of the slot in front and each of them is thus inserted with its apertureiaround the pin 22. The two plates 23,: 24am then'fixed together in superimposedposition, preferably by means of two rivets 2'7, which are introduced in corresponding holes in the two plates. In order to insert the shanks of the rivets and to be able to upset their ends, the two foot discsr20 and 21 are provided with. holes 28 which-coincide with the holes in the, plates 23, 24 and are of such a size as to allow the passage both of the shanksof the rivets and'alsoof the riveting tools. The thicknessof: the twoplates 23, 24 and the width of their apertures 25-, 26 is so selected that the plates are guided on'the foot of the bobbin without play but are'able to turn easily'about the pin 22. Since the-open ends of the two apertures 25,. 26 in the plates 23 and 24 are located in the finished bobbin-carrier foot in opposite sides of the elongatedstem, there is obtained, in spite of, the presence of these apertures on each side, a slidingsurface which extends over the entire length of the stem. The holes in the. foot discs of the bobbin carrier can also advantageously be used for lubricating the surfaces of the elongated stem which slide on the foot discs-20, 21.-
The upper footdisc 2,01carries on its upper side the sleeve 29, which also forms one, piece with the foot, for the insertion of. the end of the spindie of; the upper part 30 of the 'bobbincarrier. Modi fications of: the examples illustrated as well as otherforms of construction are of course included within the invention. Thus for example the machine may be a right-handed and lefthanded machine, that is to say it maybe so arranged that each driver can be rotated clockwise or anti-clockwise asdesired; In a machine of this kindthe-new construction of the driving plates and the arrangements of'elongated stems on the bobbin; carriers considerably more advantageous than the known arrangement of circular stems in such machine since the bobbin carriers can be faultlessly guided and driven in both directions of rotation. -In the construction as a right-handed and a left-handed machine the outer track plate points 17 and 17a areall shortened or blunted asamovement of the bobbin fromthe track crossing to the outside can then take place at all places. Instead of the clutches 7 being positively movedin both directions the arrangement may also be such that the clutches are moved in the direction of disconnection by power conserving meansyfor example springs. In this case its arrangement may be the reverse of that-illustrated, that is to say it may be such that the clutches are located in the disconnected condition in an upper end position and are moved downwards for the purpose of connection. The fixing of the driving plates 3 in the position of rest can then be effected, as known, by lugs provided on the-regulating forks of the clutches '7 which engage in recesses on the under side of the drivingplate'. w
The bobbin carrier illustrated can also be 'modifled in that the two plates 23, 24 whichform the elongated stem 19, instead of being connected together by rivets, can be connected by point welding. Or, the fixed: connection oil-the two plates can be dispensed with-since they are secured against becoming loose from the foot of the bobbin carrier by the guidance on the foot'discs and by the guidanceontheiedges of theiapertures in the driving plate and the trackplate. In some cases the elongated stem may .alsobe made in one piece. In this case it can consist of a perforated plate which is inserted axially in the pin in the foot of the bobbin carrier iii-which case the foot of the bobbin :carrier must of course be in two parts. Or the one-partplate which forms the stem can, by means of .an aperture which re ceivesthe pin and is 0128111101). one side, be pushed sideways between the foot plates. In this; case also, as in the case of thearrangementcof the plates which are not connected together, there is the advantage of easy interchangeability oithe elongated stem. 1 e 1 In combination with the new: machine iii-some cases alsothe known bobbin carriers ,with elon-. gated stems in which the upper part is revolubly mounted on the foot of the bobbin carrier canbe employed. r
Having now particularly described and ascere tained the nature of,my 'said invention andrin what manner the same is to:be performed, Ideclare that what I claim is: Y
1. In a bobbin or braiding machine for bobbin carriers having stems:elongated diametrically. of the carrier, a track platehaving a circular series of intercommunicating openings adapted to receive driving plates, the inner and outer portions of the periphery of each opening being concentric circular arcs, driving plateseach held in a respective opening and each having convex ends adaptedto lit the arcuate, portions of its opening and each having concave sides forming notches forthe bobbin carrier stems, each notch having the. peripheriesof. its end portions forming an arc of equal: radius-to the radii of the arcuate portions of said openings, the centers of the arcuate end portions ofeach notch being spaced longitudinally of the plate and'the notch having a peripheral portion connecting the arcuate end portionsthereof, and means to actuate said plates; in combinationwith bobbin carriers having stems of cylindrically lenticular shape with their major diameter less than the length of a notch and their sides being segments of cylinders of equal radius to the radii of the end portions of the notches.
2. In a bobbin or braiding machine for bobbin carriers having stems elongated diametrically of the carrier, a track plate having a circular series of intercommunicating openings adapted to receive driving plates, the irmer and outer portions of the periphery of each opening being concentric circular arcs, driving plates each held in a respective opening and each having convex ends adapted to fit the arcuate portions of its opening and each having concave sides forming notches for the bobbin carrier stems, each notch having the peripheries of its end portions forming an arc of equal radius to the radii of the arcuate portions of said openings, the centers of the arcuate end portions of each notch being spaced longitudinally of the plate and the notch having a peripheral portion connecting the arcuate end portions .ithereof, and means to actuate ,said plates; in cQmbination with bobbin'carriers havingstems of =cylindrically lenticular shape with their majorlidiameter less than the lengthfiof a notchv and their sides being segments of cylindersiofgequal radius to the radii'of the end portions of .the notches, each-stem being revoluble on its carrierwiththe axis of revolution coinciding with .theaxis of the carrier. g

Ina bobbin: orlbraiding machine for bobbin carriers, having stems elongated diametrically of the carrier, a track platehaving a circular series of intercommunicating openings adapted to receive driving p1ates,the inner and outer portions ofthe periphery of each openingibeing concentric circular-arcs, driving plates each held in a respectiveopening and each: having convexends adapted to iitthe arcuate portions of its opening and each having concave sides forming notches for the bobbin carrier stems, each notch having the peripheries of its'en'd portions forming an arc of equalradiusto the radii-of thearcuate portions of saidopenings, the centers or the arcuate. end portions of each notch'being spaced longitudinally of the plate and the riotch' having a peripheral portion 'con'necting -'-th' arcuate end portions thereof, said notches-being symmetrically arranged with respect to the longitudinal and transverse axes of the respective plates, and means to actuate'said plates; incombination'with bobbin carrier's having stemsof cylindrically lenticular shape withi their major -diameter less than the le'ng'th of-a no'tch ancttheir sides being segments of cylinders of equal radius to the radii of the end Dortiohs' of the-notches. i 4.-=In-:a--bobbin=or braiding machine for bobbin carriers having stems elongated diametrically of the carrier, a track plate having a circular series of intercommunicating"openings adapted toreceive driving plates, the inner and outer portions of the periphery of each opening being concentric circular arcs, driving. plates each held in a respective opening and each -having' convex ends adapted to fit the arcuat'eportio'ns of its opening and each-having concave sides forming notches forthe bobbin carrier-stems, each notchhaving the peripheries of its end portions forming an arc of equal radius to the radii of-the arcuate portions of said openings-the centers of the arcuate end'portions'of each notch being spaced longitu d-inally of the plate and the notch having a peripheral portion connecting the arcuate end portions thereof, s'aid notches being symmetrically arranged with respect to the longitudinal and transverse axes 0f the respective plates, and means to actuate said plates; in combination with bobbin carriers having stems of cylindrically lenticular shape with their major diameter less than the length of a notch and their sides being segments of cylindersv of equal radius to the radii of the end portions of the notches, each stem being revoluble on its carrier with the axis of revolution coinciding with the axis of the carrier.
5. In a bobbin or braiding machine for bobbin carriers having stems elongated diametrically of the carrier, a track plate having a circular series of intercommunicating openings adapted to receive driving plates, the inner and outer portions of the periphery of each opening being concentric circular arcs, driving plates each held in a respective opening and each having convex ends adapted to fit the arcuate portions of its opening and each having concave sides forming notches for the bobbin carrier stems, each notch having the peripheries of its end portions forming an arc of equal radius to the radii of the arcuate portions of saidopenings; the centers'of the arcuate end portions of each notch being spaced longitudinally of the plate and the notch having a peripheral portion. connecting the arcuate' end portions thereof, said notches being symmetrically arranged with respect to the longitudinal and transverse axes of the respective plates,.a constantly revolving drive -member=foreach plate but normally free therefrom,- a clutch device adapted for clutchingoperation from the pattern gear of the machine and arranged to clutch the respective plate to its drive member, means on each drive member unclutching its clutch upon completion of an operative movement of its plate, and means associated with each-clutch and holding its plate against" rotation beween operative movement thereof; in combination with bobbin carriers having stems of cylindrically, lenticular shape with their major diameter .less than the length of a notchand their, sides being segments of cylinders of equal radiusto the; radii of the end portions of the hes. it. s i
6. In a bobbin orbraiding; machine for bobbin carriers having stems elongated diametrically of the carrier, atrack platehav-ing-a circular series of intercommunicating openings; adapted to receive driving plates the inner and outer portions of the periphery ofeach openingbeing concentric circular arcs,'.d v ng plates each held in a respective opening and I each; having -1convex ends adapted to fit the arcuateportions of its opening and each, having concave sides-forming notches for the bobbin carrier stems, eachnotchhaving the peripheries ofitsend portionsforming an arc of equal radius to the radiiof the arcuate' portions of said openings, the centers or" the areuate end portions of each notch being spacedlongitudinally of the plate and the notch having a peripheral portion, connecting the arcuate end portions thereof, said notches being symmetrically arranged withrespect to the longitudinal and transverse axes of the respective plates, a constantly revolving drive member for; each plate but nore mally free therefrom, a clutch deviceadapted for clutching operation irom the pattern; gear of the machine and arranged-toclutch the respective plate to its drivemember, means on each drive member unclutching its clutch upon completion of an operative movement of its plate, and means associated with each clutch. and holding its plate against rotation between operative movement thereof in combination with bobbin carriers having steps'of cylindrically lenticular shape with their major diameter less than the length of a notch and their sides being segments of cylinders of equalradius'to, the radii of the end portions'of the notches, each stem being revoluble on its carrier with the axis of revolu-- tion coinciding with the axis of the carrier.. j
7. A bobbin carrier for braiding machines of the class described comprising a stem, spaced discs on the lower part of thestem, said stem forming a journal between said discs, and a lenticular'member mounted :on saidjournal for engagementv by the bobbin moving member of the machine, the said. lenticularmember as a-whole having unlimited rotatable movement" about said journal.
8. A bobbin carrier .for braiding machinesof the class described comprising a stem,. spaced discs on the lower part: of the stem, said stem forming a journal between said discs, a lenticular member rotatably mounted on said journal for engagement by the bobbin moving member of the machine, said lenticular member having a.slot opening through" one side 'to permit engagement of said member on said journal, and means to secure said member on said journal. w
9. A bobbin carrier for braiding machineso the class described comprisinga stem,wspaced discs on the lower part of the stem, said 'stem forming a journal between said discs, ale'nticular member rotatably mounted on said journalfor engagement by the bobbin moving member ofthe machine, said lenticularmember consisting of a pair of lenticular plates each having a slot open-' ing through one side to permit engagement of the plate on the journal, said plates being arranged on the journal with the plate openings on opposite sides of said member, and" means toisecure said plates together. i 2 7 10. A bobbin carrier for braiding machines of the class described comprising a stem, spaced discs on the lower part of the stem, said stem forming a journal between said discs'fa lenticular member rotatably mounted on said journal for: engagement bythe bobbin'moving member of the machine, said lenticular member consisting of a i said discs having openings therein for insertion of said rivets in the plates.
