The invention relates to improvements in beach or lounging chairs andv'the objects of the improvements are to create a beach or lounging chair equalling the comfort of the types in use, but .5 folding to abundle small enough that it may be taken along in automobiles for camping: equipment or for outings, requiring only a small storage space when not in use. I have illustrated a preferred form, although'numerous minor variations can be made without departing from the principal objects of the invention, and the usual ac-' cessories may be adapted for use thereon.

Fig. l is a perspective drawing of the beach chairwhen opened for use. Fig. 2 illustrates a side view of a different form of my chair, when opened for use. Fig. 3 is a sectional detail cut through the front of the chair, showing thereon struction of the form of chair shown in Fig. 2.

Referring to Fig. 1,.the 'side bars 14 are formed of sections hinged at their adjacent .upper corners 6, allowing them to fold to a much shorter length whenv not in use. The side bars are supported by the props 8 pivoted thereto: at 12, which props are joined at their lower ends by a rod 13, which 25 engages in notches 17,.on the top edges of the rear legs 3, making the angularity of the chair back adjustable; Theifront legs 4 and 9 are pivoted to the side bars, at 2l'and 5 and are joined by a rod 1 near theirupper ends, which-fetches up against the lower edges of the rear legs 3, holding the-front legs 4' and 9 securely in place. When not in use, the front legsfold by turning them in a contra-clockwise. direction. in Fig. 1 and, whenfolded, therod 1, joining the legs, fits intothe notches 18, 19 and 22in the upper edges of the sidebars and rear. legs, making a compact bundle. The seat and back '7 is made of a piece .of flexible material. The flexible material is secured-to a rod 15 joining the side bars near .the 40 top and to a rod 11, joining the rear legs, at the other end. This rod joining the rear legs is preferably placed rearwardly of the pivotsi2 and 20 which connect the rear legs to the side bars.

Referring to Fig. 2, the rear legs 3 aresecured to the frontllegs 9 lbypivots .10, which pivots allow the front legs to fold inside of and substantially parallel to the rear legs, when not in use. When in use, the front legs are turned until a shoulder or notch 16, built on to or cut into the front legs, fetches up against the rod 11, which joins the front ends of the rear legs. Two props 8, one on each side of the chair, are pivoted at 12 to the side bars and are joined near their other ends by a rod 13 which engages notches 17 on the rear legs. The forward end of the side bar section 14 is secured to the forward end of the rear leg 3 by the-pivot; 20; The sidebars are in two sections which are joined by hinges 6,; so that; when not in ;use,:one'section' will fold over on the other section. A folding'chair comprising-at each side an upwardly inclined side bar formed of pivoted sections which may be folded, a rearwardly inclined rear leg, pivoted at its front end to the front end of the side bar, a front leg pivoted to the front end of one of said side bar or rear leg, a prop, pivoted to the side bar and having means at its lower end adjustably engaging in one of a plurality of notches in the rear leg, a cross rod connecting the upper ends of the side bars, a cross rod connecting the upper ends of the rear legs, a fabric seat and back connected between said rods, stop means between the front and rear legs.
