' In Germany November 3, 1932 g 8 Claims. (oil 153-32) For the correction of the inexact stroke of type-levers for typewriters, either a shifting of the type to the right or to the left or a shortening or a lengthening of the type-levers becomes necessary.
The bending of the type-lever for the purpose of lengthening or shortening the lever demands a great effort and yet the obtained degree of bending is more or less uncertain.
An object of the invention is a device with the aid of which the type-lever can be bent exactly without any effort.
For the shifting of the types to the right or to the left, hitherto, one uses special crank pliers which accomplish their task only in a defective manner because the degree of lateral shifting is more or less left to chance. In cases, the typelevers are damaged by the sharp pinching of the pliers and, besides, the handling of the pliers requires skill and effort.
Another object of the invention is a device with which any desired position of the type can be obtained without long testing, without damage of the types and the type-levers and without effort in a shortest time.
Some embodiments of the invention are diagrammatically shown in the annexed drawings, in which:

Figures 1 to 3 show the support a with the two fixed insets b and the movable inset c, a spring bolt d piercing the support a with its return spring e and the guide bar J of the movable inset c, besides, bearings g and notches h for the insertion and holding of the type-lever.
The employment is the following: After the support a is put in between the two jaws of the vise with both fixed insets b and the movable inset c, the type-lever is placed onto the bearings When the movable jaw of the vise is screwed up, a pressure is effected upon the type-lever lying between the three bearings, and the type-lever will be bent.
The arrangement has the advantage thatwith the an of thevise-itis very easy to bend thetype-l'ever with a small effort. But the main advantage lies in the fact that it is possible to'regulate "the desired bending of the type-lever with the aid of the vise i. e. the degree of the necessary lengthening or shortening, and j that, therefore, because according to its ratio of gearing'a certain turning of the handle of the vise corresponds to a certain shortening or lengtheningof the type-lever. Further advantages in comparison with expensive forming-pliers are: cheaper production, great stability, and the circumstance that the pressure exercised by the vise acts in a perpendicular manner on. all the pressure spots.

For a better understanding of the invention a description of the embodiment illustrated in Figs. 1 to 3 will now be given.
The reference character a designates a. U- shaped frame which is adapted to be mounted in a vise as may be clearly seen from Fig. 3. Securedto one side of the frame a. are two insets b. On the opposite side of the frame is a third inset c which is located intermediate between insets a. and preferably at the mid-point on the opposite side between insets b. Inset c is movable and is mounted upon a bolt 01 which protrudes through frame a. A spring e is coiled upon bolt d in order to hold inset 0 against the face of frame a.
By referring to Fig. 2, it will be observed that grooves or notches" It are provided in each inset. These notches h are adapted "to engage a part of the type lever as may "be clearly seen from Fig. 1 wherein the type lever is shown in dotted lines.
The use and operation of the device is apparent to those skilled inthe art. It will suffice to state that the device is mounted in a vise as illustrated in Fig. 3. The handle ofthe vise is drawn up in the usual manner after the type lever shown in dotted lines is placed between the insets b and c. The bolt 01 forces inset 0 against the type-lever. In this manner, any amount of bending, extension or deflection of the stem of the type-lever may be made. Of course the amount of bending, etc., may be carefully and closely regulated by the are through which the handle of the vise is turned because the ratio of gearing, etc., in the vise corresponds to a certain movement of the jaws of the vise.
In certain instances, it may be desired to provide a device in which the insets are reversed from the positions shown in Figs. 1 to 3. The detailed construction will be the, same as that described hereinabove. By theuse of the second device, the type-lever can be adjusted in the other direction. In connection with both devices, it will be observed that the bolt d causes the pres sure from the vise to be properly applied to, the
type lever when the handle of the wise is screwed It will be noted that notches h'of theinset are rounded. It has been found that this construe tion has given satisfactory. ,results:even"when' tempered levers are used. x
In the practical execution, as it v Figures 4 to '7, the reference character 1 indicates a structure with three bearings 2 for the hanging of the device between two jaws of a vise and two notches 3 for receiving the stem of thetype-lever. Besides, there is a movable inset 4 with a notch 5 and two spring bolts 6 with return springs 7 and a guiding bar 8.
Figure 8 shows an arrangement which consists only of two parts, that is to say of the part 9 for the reception of the stem of the type-lever and the part 10 for the reception of the type. Both parts show a cover-plate 11 for the insertion between the two jaws of the vise. l
The device acts in the following manner: When the device is not under pressure, the slots 3 are in straight direction with the notch 5, so that it is possible to insert the type-lever simultaneously into the slot 3 as well as into the notch 5. Suitably, a small pressure is employed so that the type presses itself into the notch 5 fitted to its shape. When the device is then put under pressure, the movable part 4 moves inthe direction of the arrow and presses the type vertically to the side. 1

What I claim is: e c 1 1. A device for straightening type-levers for typewriters which comprises a U-shaped frame, a pair of fixed insets mounted on one side of said frame, a movable inset mounted on the opposite side of said frame from said fixed insets and between the pair, and a bolt movably mounted in said. frame and secured to. said movable inset whereby a clamping device may force the. bolt and the movable inset toward the fixed-insets.
2. A device for straightening type-levers for typewriters which comprises a U-shaped frame, a pair of fixed insets mountedon one side of said frame, a movable inset mounted on the opposite side of said frame from said fixed insets and between the pair, a bolt movably mounted in said frame and secured to-said movable insetwhereby is shown in a clamping device may force the bolt and the movable inset toward the fixed insets, and a coil spring on said bolt to bring the inset to its normal position.
3. A device for straightening type-levers for typewriters which comprises a frame, a plurality of fixed insets mounted in said frame, amovable inset mounted in said frame on the opposite side from said fixed insets, a notch in each of said insets for holding the type-lever, and a movable "bolt secured to said movable inset for making contact with a jaw of a clamping device.

A device for straightening type-levers for typewriters which comprises a frame, a plurality of fixed insets mounted in said frame, a movable inset mounted in said frame on the opposite side from said fixed insets, a notch in each of said insets for holding the type-lever, a movable bolt .secured to said movable inset for making contact with a jaw of a clamping device, and a spring for said bolt for returning the movable inset to its normal position.

A device for straightening type-levers for typewriters which comprises a U-shaped frame, a pair of fixed insets mounted on one side of said frame, a movable inset mounted on the opposite side of said frame from said fixed insets and between the pair, a notch in each of said insets for holding the type-lever, and a bolt movably mounted in said frame and secured to said movable inset whereby a clamping device may force the bolt and the movable inset toward the fixed insets.
6. A device for straightening type-levers for typewriters which comprises a U-shaped frame, a pair of fixed insets mounted on one side of said frame, a movable inset mounted on the opposite side of said frame from said fixed insets and between the pair, a notch in each of said insets for holding the type-lever, a bolt movably mounted in said frame and secured to said movable inset whereby a clamping device may force the bolt and the movable inset toward the fixed insets, and a coil spring on said bolt to bring the inset to its normal position.
'7. A device for straightening type-levers which comprises a frame, notches in the side of said frame for a type-lever, a movable member operatively associated with said frame, and a slot incorporated in said movable member to cooperate with said two notches of said frame whereby typelevers may be straightened.
8. A device. for straightening type-levers for typewriterswhich comprises a fixed member capable of being mounted in a clamping device, a pair of notches in said fixed member for a type-lever, a movable member carried in said fixed member, and a slot in said movable member for cooperating with said. notches whereby type levers can be straightened.
