and particularly to the construction and'mount- "ing" of an abrading roll' adapted for heavywork. mycopridis An object of the invention is to provide an abrading machine including an abrading roll in the form of a plurality of disks on a mandrel and secured thereto by pressure sleeves which. are slidable upon the mandrel. A further object is to provide an abradingroll including a plurality of disks mounted upon a mandreLand bearing sleeves mounted on the mandrel and, preferably, acting as pressure sleeves clamping said disks in place.
These and other objects and advantages kof the invention will be apparent from thefollowing specification when taken with the accompanying drawing in w 'chz Fig. 1 is a sectional end elevation of an abrading machine embodying the invention; and

In the embodiment illustrated, which, it will be understood, is susceptible of various modifications and changes Without departing from the spirit of the invention, the machine has an appropriate framework with and in which the various elements comprising parts hereinabove referred to are operatively assembled.
This framework includes supports 1 and bearings 2 for the work supporting means or roller 3 and guide members 4 in which reciprocable bearing members 5 having suitably bushed bearings 6 in which are rotatably and reciprocably mounted the abrading means or roll 7 more particularly described hereinafter.
The weight of the abrading roll 7 is such that it is moved, by gravity, toward the work supporting roller 3, and'thus into appropriate abrading contact with the work supported upon the roller 3, but, if desired, springs or other pressure exerting means may be employed for forcing it to the work. A
In order that the desired delicate adjustment of the pressure of the abradingroll 7 upon the work may be attained, the bearingmembers 5", which support the abrading roll, are provided with cushioning supporting means, preferably in the form of cylinders 8 having pistons 9, the rods or stems 10 of which engage with and support the bearing members 5. therein metal hubs 13. These disks are arranged upon a mandrel 14 in intimate contact and mounted for rotation therewith by suitably keying their hubs 13 to the mandrel keyway 15, as shown in Fig. 2. The 17 is slipped onto the other end of the mandrel after all of the disks are in place thereon and is forced home against the end disk by a cap screw 19 which'engages the screw threads of abore 20 in the vadjacent kend of the mandrel. Thus,A the abrading disks are assembledon the lmandrel in intimate contact to form the abrading roll.
The abrading roll is rotated by means of pulleys 21 keyed to the sleeve members 16, 17 and belts 22 driven by pulleysv23 fixed on the shaft 24 of a motor 25 carried upon the bridge 26 other sleeve member which is carried by the bearing members 5.' Axy ial reciprocation of the abrading roll is accomplished by means of a lever 27 having a pivot` bearing 28 in a fixed bracket 29 and provided with an opening 30 carrying pins 31 which engage a suitable annular recess 32 adjacent to the outer end of the ,sleeve memberv 17. The free end of the lever 27 is provided with a longitudinal slot 33 which receives the pin 34 of a crank arm 35 on a shaft 36. The shaft 36 is rotated by a worm and wheel gearing 37,138, the worm 37 of which is mounted on a back shaft 39 driven by gears 40, and 41, from the motor shaft extension 24.
, It will be noted that the sleeves 16, 17 provide bearing surfaces which are substantially larger than the `bearing surfaces obtained when the mandrel is mounted directly in the bearings 6, as has been :the prior practice. Furthermore, the omission of the usual clamping nuts at each end of the series of disks makes it possible to reduce the space required between members 5 for a roll of any given length. The mandrel 14 may be of a type of steel best adapted for driving the abrading roll, and the sleeves 16, 17 may be of the same steel or of other metal best suited for their double .functions of clamping means andbearing sleeves. .t t. 2. An abrading roll as claimed in claim 1, wherein said sleeve members have cylindrical external surfaces and constitute the bearing members for rotatably mounting the abradng roll in an abrading machine.
