UNITED STATES' PATENT OEEIOE. N
v.EDWARD GOLD, OEBROOKLYN, NEw YORK.
l IMPROVEMENT IN T'UULAR HEATERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 198,766, dated January 1, 1878i; application filed December 1o, 1817.
New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tubular Heaters; and I do hereby declare lthat the following is `a full, clear, and exact ldescription thereof, which .wlll enable others skilled in theart to u which 1t appertains to make and use the same, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, and `to the letters of reference marked thereon, whlch form a part of this speciiication.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a heater, las` will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The annexed j drawings, towhich reference is made, fully illustrate my invention, andin said drawingsu i Figure 1 is a central vertical section on the. u me m, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section 011thelineyg/,lig1.` u
A represents the base of the heater, supported upon legs B B; and upon this base are placed two cylindrical concentric shells, C and C. The inner shell nulartop plate,D, having a center cover, E,
`om which a pipe, G, extends out to `the smoke-pipe H. The outer shell (l is provided on lts upper edge witha ring, D, whiehsupports the `top I of the heater, said top being in the center provided with ahinged cover, 1J, as shown. In the pipe G is a damper, a, operated from the outside of the furnace by a rod,` b. Inside of the innershell 0" is a series of pipes, KK, passing through the base Auand the plate D, for the Vpassage of air to be heated. These pipes or ilues are arranged in a circle, and surround the fire-box L, which is on the center of `the base A. Below the base A, under the lire-box, is the ash-pit M, extending to one side, asshown. In the base A are also a number of openings, d, to admit cold air lin between the two shells C C. N is the chute for admittingfuel tothe fire-box. Thisv chute is on an incline, and passes through is provided with an an-` bothshells, C CU Directly opposite thisehute is an inclined deiiecting-plate, from the top of the lire-box to the inner shell.` Under this deilecting-plate a pipe, l), passes out through the base A, and connects with the smoke-pipe'H, y
When the lire is started the damper `a in the plate or diaphragm E is left open, so that the smoke, &c., can pass directly to the smoke-` pipe; but when the lire gets underway this damper is closed, which drives or compels the smoke and heat to entirely envelop the airtubes` K, andpass down aroundsaid tubes. The heat is deflected bythe fuel-chute N and pleite O,\so as to spread the heat all around, and then it passes through thepipe P to the smokepipe;` i u `7 f" The tubular heater, it will be seen, is raised so as to permit the ash-pit M being placed below and outside of the'heater, giving room for the'iire-box at or near the bottom of the heater This construction admits of the largest possible heatingsurface. 1 l
Thehot air is to be conducted from the heater to the room or rooms where needed by pipes and registers arranged in any of the `wellknown andusual ways.
Having thus `fully described my invention what I claim as new, and desire to` secure Letters Patent, is Ina tubular heater, the diaphragm E, arranged at `the top ot' the tubes, and `provided with, pipe G, having damper a, in combination with the chute N, serving as a defiector upon one side, and thel deflector O upon the opposite side, the fire-box L at the bottom of the heater-shells 'G G', and top D, substantially as and for thepurpose set forth. u u
Intestimony that Iclaim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of. two witnesses. EDWARD E. GOLD.
`Witnessesz U. M. WATsoN, PAUL von` FRANKENBURG.
