I COMBINATION: BATH-UNIT D John S. Carlson, Brooklyn, v. ,Application February 9, 1934', Serial Ne. 710,544
s-olsims." (01. 4 -162 This invention relates to bathroom equipment, I Figure. 3 is a fragmentary vertical sectional and comprehends a combination bath unit in view illustrating the manner in which the unit which either a tub, shower, steam, electric,.hot is employed as an attachment for a previously air or medicinal bath may be'taken. installed bathtub.
'5 In its broad aspect, the invention comprehends Figure 4 is a vertical sectional view through 5 a combination bath unit which may be made the unit. complete in itself to'include a tub :as an integral Figure 5 is a perspective view of the hori-' part thereof or as an attachment for a previzontal partition member removed from the unit. ously-installed ordinary bathtub to convert the Referring to the drawings by characters of same into a combination bath unit for the purreference, the combination bath unit when made 10 poses set forth. 1 as a complete unit including the tub as an inte- The invention contemplates a combination gral part therof, consists of a bottom wall 10 bath unit, the lower portion of which either and marginal upstanding side and end walls 11. defines a tub or is associated with a tub, with and 12. v The bottom wall is provided with the the remainder thereof defining an enclosure usual drain outlet '13 and one of the end walls 15 which in addition to taking the place of a shower 12 is provided with an overflow outlet 14 which curtain to prevent splashing of the water on the respectively communicate with the drain and floor, serves as a closed cabinet for taking steam, overflow pipes 15 and 16. The unit also includes a top wall 23 which derived therefrom. 1 is suitably supported for movement from the With the above recited and other objects in closed dotted-line position resting on top of the view, reference is had to the following descripupper edges of the walls 11 and 12 to the full 45 tion and accompanying drawings, in which there line elevated open position illustrated in Figis exhibited one'example or embodiment of the ure 4. Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating the purpose of raising and lowering the same. In unit installed in a bathroom. order to provide further ventilation to the en- Figure 2 is a fragmentary vertical sectional closure, a ventilator 26 is provided in the lower view taken approximately on the line 2-2 of portion of the closure, or door 19, and said ven- Figure 1. tilator is directed inwardly and downwardly to 55 preclude the leakage of water therethrough. It will also be observed that the upper wall 23 is provided with a ventilator 2'7. It thus follows that the user may employ the unit for either a tub or shower bath and in the latter instance, the necessity of using a shower bath curtain is dispensed with, as the enclosure acts in the capacity'of a shower room or stall. In order to adapt the device for other uses, such as for a steam bath, electrical bath, hot air bath or medicinal bath, a horizontal partition element designated generally by the reference character 28 is employed which is removably associated with the upstanding side and end walls 11 and 12. The partition member in the form illustrated consists of a waterproof flexible material 2 9 which is supported by a marginal expansible frame 30 designed to frictionally contact with the inner surfaces of the side and end walls 11 and 12 to hold the same in various vertically adjusted positions. The material 29 is provided with a central opening 31 which may be increased or decreased in size in any suitable manner, such as by the lacing 32. It thus follows that with the partition in place, as illustrated in Figure 4, the bottom wall and side and end walls, together with said partition, define a closed chamber within which the person may arrange himself with the head and other portions of the body exposed from the chamber through the central opening 31. In practice, the user may seat himself upon a chair and steam, hot air and electrical heating apparatus or the like may be also arranged within the chamber to accomplish the desired end. Where .a medicinal bath is to be taken, it will be observed that a container 33 is supported within the chamber on one of the side or end walls 11 and 12, and said container is provided with an upper displaceable cover 34.- having an outlet nozzle 35 and to which container'a steam supply conduit 36 is adapted to communicate for feeding the medicinal substance from the container with the steam. In certain instances, where it is desired to inhale medicinal vapors, a tube. 37 may be attached to the outlet nozzle 35 and led upwardly through the opening 31 or otherwise to a point above the partition 28.
As illustrated in Figure 3 of the drawings, the unit is disclosed as an attachment for an ordinary bathtub A, in which instance the unit bottom wall is dispensed with and the side or end walls Bare formed with a channeled lower end C which is designed to fit over the upper edge of the tub. In other respects, the construction of the unit-is identical with that previously described. 1
What is claimed is:
. 1. A vapor bath attachment for use with combination bathtub showers and shower units, having a chamber provided with enclosing walls, comprising a vertically adjustable horizontal partition snugly fitting within and intermediate the heights of said walls and having an adjustable central opening.
2. A vapor bath attachment for use with combination bathtub showers andshower units, having'a chamber provided with enclosing walls, comprising a vertically adjustable horizontal partition having an expansible frame for causing the partitionto snugly fit within said enclosure and press against said walls and having an adjustable central opening to define within the lower portion of the enclosure a chamber for taking electric, hot air, steam or medicinal baths.
3. A vapor bath attachment for use with combination bathtub shower and shower units having a chamber provided with enclosing walls, comprising a partition formed with an expansible marginal'frame for causing the partition to engage said walls with sufficient friction to hold the partition in any vertical adjusted position, said partition having a centrally positioned opening and slits extending from opposite sides thereof, and lacing for drawing the edgesof said slits towards each other for adjusting the sizeof said opening, whereby said partition and said walls below said partition form a bath cabinet with the partition positioned with the opening arranged whereby the head or other parts of the body of the person may protrude therethrough.
