As shown in Fig. 6 the bevel gear 18 carries a series of friction plates 25 interleaved with similar friction plates 26 carried by a clutch member 27 keyed at 28 to the shaft 20. Similar friction plates 29 and 30 are carried respectively by the bevel gear 19 and a clutch member 31 also keyed to the shaft 20. The friction clutches within the bevel gears 18 and 19 are adapted to be alternatively applied to connect one or the other of the bevel gears, to the shaft to thereby effect drive of the latter in opposite directions by means of a clutch applying member 32 slidably mounted for endwise movement on the adjacent hubs of the bevel gears 18 and 19. Engaging this clutch applying member is a shipper member 33 fixed to a transverse operating rod 34 slidably mountedwithinthe frame 10. This clutch operating rod is adapted to be shifted axially by a suitable operating lever 35 pivotally mounted on the frame 10 at one side of the truck (see Fig. 1). i
The mechanism for driving the tool rotating and feeding mechanism herein comprises spur gears 36 and 37 hav-ingv their axes lying in the same vertical transverse-plane and spaced equally from the longitudinal center of the apparatus. The gear 36 herein drives the feeding and rotating means ofthe drilling tool 2 while the gear 37 drives the rotating and feeding means of the drilling tool 3. As the driving connections between the gears 36 and 37 and the rotating and feeding means of the drilling tools 2 and 3 are identical, it is thought that a description of the driving connections for 'one will suffice for both. As shown in Fig. the spur gear 36 is keyed at 38 to the lower end of `a vertical shaft 40 journaled in suitable bearings carried by a swivel frame or housing 41. It will herein be noted that the swivel frame 41 has secured thereto by means of screws .42 an'annular bearing member 43 rotatably mounted within bearing sleeves 44. These bearing sleeves 44 are supported by the frame and are held in position by an annular retaining ring 45 bolted to the frame 10. It will therefore be evident that the swivelv frame, together with its bearing structure, forms a hori- Zontal turntable mounted on the frame-10 for rotation about a vertical axis and supporting the drilling tool 2. Again referring to the tool rotating and feeding mechanism, it will be observed that the vertical shaft 40 has keyed thereto at its upper end a bevel pinion 46 meshing with a bevel gear 47 (see also Fig. 4) journaled on a transverse horizontal stud 48.` As 'shownthe stud 48 is keyed at 49 to the hub portion of a swingable housing or frame 50 mounted for rocking movement about a transverse horizontal axis within roller bearings 51 supported within the opposite sides of the swivel frame 41. The tiltable frame 50`has a cylindrical external bearing surface 52 which engages the inner periphery 53 of the swivel housing and these surfaces cooperate to form an additional bearing for the frame 50 during'its rocking movement. 'I'he forward portion of the swivel frame 41Vis cut away at'54 and a portion of the frame 55 of the frame 50 projects laterally through the opening formed by this cut away portion. Again referring to Fig. 5 it will be noted that the bevel gear 47 meshes with reverse bevels 56 and. 57. The bevelfgears 56 and 57 are keyed toclutch housings 58 and 58a respectively. The clutch housing 58 carries a series of friction plates 59 interleaved with a series .of similar plates GOcarried by ashaft 61.
The shaft 61 is journaled at its opposite ends within suitable ball bearings carried by the swingable housing 50. Similar friction plates 62, 63 are carried by the clutch housing 584 and the shaft 6l respectively. The operating mechanism for alternatively applying the clutches within the clutch housings 58 and 58a to thereby connect one or the other of the reverse bevels 56, 57 to the shaft 61 herein comprises a Vclutch applying member 64 surrounding and axially movable relative to the shaft 61. Engaging this clutch applying member 64 is a clutch shipper member 65 (see Fig. 7) pivotally mounted at one end as at 66 within slotted bearings formed on the inner end of the stud 48 (see also Fig. 4). As illustrated, the shippermember 65 is at its other end vertically slotted at 67 and engaging this slot is an `eccentric member or crank pin 68 carried on a shaft 69 rotatably mounted within and extending axially through one of the hub portions of the swinging frame 50. Rotatably mounted on the outer end of this shaft 69 is a lever 70 for yieldingly loading the clutches and having suitable spring pressed locking means 71 for maintaining the lever in its different adjusted positions. It will thus be seen that when the lever 70 is swung in one direction or the other the eccentric pin 68 moves Within the slot 67 and as a result the shipper member 65 is swung about its pivot thereby moving the clutch applying member 64 axially in one direction or the other to connect one or the other of the reverse bevels 56, 57 to the shaft 61. It will thus be evident that the shaft 61 may be driven in one direction or the other at will, the clutches being yieldably loaded in each case.
. As shown in Figs. 4 and 5, the shaft 61 has keyed thereto at 72 a spur pinion 73 which drives the adjusting mechanism for the drill supporting means 4 as will later be described. Alined with the shaft 61 and also keyed to the pinion 73 is a main transmission shaft 74. This transmission shaft 74 is arranged concentrically within and extends through a forwardly projecting tubular supporting arm or boom 75 mounted for rotation about its longitudinal axis within bearing sleeves 76 carried respectively by a frame 77 bolted to the laterally projecting portion 55 of the swinging frame 50, and a frame 78 fixed to the outer end of the frame 77. As shown in Fig. 3 the tubular supporting arm or boom 75 has secured thereto by screws 79 at its outer end a swivel frame or bearing bracket 80. The drilling tools are swiveled on the bearing brackets 80 as will later be described. In this instance the outer end of the main drive shaft 74 has keyed thereto a bevel pinion 81 meshing with a larger bevel ring gear 82. The bevel ring gear 82 is rotatable about an axis perpendicular to the axis of the drive shaft 74 and is journaled on a ball bearing 83 suitably supported by a bearing bracket 84 and a swivel plate 85. This swivel plate 85 is rigidly secured by screws 86 to the bearing bracket 84 and is herein rotatably mounted in a bore 87 arranged concentrically with the bevel gear 82 and formed within the bracket 80. The swivel plate 85 is provided with a peripheral groove 88 with which a clamp or set screw 89 is engageable to clamp the swivel plate together with the drilling tool in its different adjusted positions rigidly to the bracket 80.` As illustrated, the bevel ring gear 82 meshes with a bevel gear 90 fixed to a shaft 91 in a plane with the main driving shaft 74. In the operation of the improved drilling apparatus the same is propelled under its own power along the mine trackway by the motor 11 through the driving connections between the motor and the truck wheels as described above, the desired direction of movement of the apparatus along the trackway being controlled by suitableapplication of the reverse controlling clutches 25, 26 and 29, 30. As the drilling apparatus moves forwardly along the trackway the cable reel 128 pays out the conductor cable 127 and when the apparatus moves rearwardly the conductor cable 127 is automatically wound in by the cable reel. When the drilling apparatus reaches the working face the operator applies the brake 139, 140 holding the truck wheels against rotation thereby maintaining the truck stationary. If it is desired to operate the drilling tools at one side of the trackway to position the same close to the rib the operator releases the clamping devices 120, 122 and swings the turntables 41 thereby moving the supporting means 4 and the drilling tool supported thereby to one side of the truck as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1. If it is desired to swing the drilling tools upwardly or downwardly, for instance to bring the drilling tools close to the mine bottom or roof as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2, the operator connects the clutch 109, 110 and upon suitable application of the friction clutches 59, 60 and 62, 63 the drilling tools may be swung upwardly or downwardly under motor control as desired. If it is desired to swing the drilling tool about the axis of the supporting arm or boom 75 the operator rotates the worm gearing 101, 102 thereby rotating the supporting boom about its longitudinal axis. The worm gearing 101, 102 is self-locking and the boom is thereafter locked against rotation. When desired the angle of the drilling tool relative to the supporting boom may be changed simply by releasing the clamping screw 89 and bodily swinging the drilling tool relative to the swivel bracket 80. When the drilling tools are suitably positioned adjacent the working face the clutches 98, 99 may be so controlled as to effect slow feeding movement of the drill bits 97 and after the holes are completed the drill bits may be retracted from the face at a high speed in the manner clearly described in the copending applications mentioned above. It will further be noted that the drilling tools may be swung independently to one side or the other of the truck and upwardly or downwardly as desired so that a plurality of holes may be simultaneously drilled in any position, it being possible to swing the drilling tools close to and into parallel relation with the mine roof and bottom or to swing the same vlaterally adjacent either rib.
As a result of this invention an improved selfpropelled multiple tool drilling apparatus is provided wherein the drilling tools are swingable into a plurality of positions relative to the working face, and by employing the improved supporting and adjusting means for the tools the latter may be moved into such positions with facility and expeditiously. It will further be noted that by employing the improved adjustable mountings for the drilling tools the latter may be adjusted rindependently to either side of the truck or upwardly or downwardly as desired, the improved supporting means being so constructed as to permit the drilling tools to be positioned close to and parallel with the mine roof and bottom or adjacent either' rib. Itwill still further' be noted that but a single motor is utilized for propelling the apparatus along the trackway, for swinging the drilling tools upwardly and downwardly, and for driving'the tool rotating and feeding mechanism, the driving connections between the motor and the various elements being of a simple and reliable design adapted to withstand the severe service conditions encountered underground in mines. It will also be noted that the apparatus is wholly self-contained and operates at all times from the mine trackway. It will also be noted that the drill supporting and adjusting and driving mechanisms and the improved truck mounting are equally applicable to single tool drills and it is to be understood that my invention is not limited in its scope to multiple drill mechanisms other than as expressly set forth in certain of the appended claims. These and other uses and advantages of this invention will be clearly apparent to those skilled in the art.
While in this application there is specifically described one form which the invention mayassume in practice, it will be understood that this form of the same isishown for purposes of illustration and that the invention may be modified and embodied in various other forms without departing from its spirit or the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a drilling apparatus, a portable support, a motor thereon, horizontal turntables mounted on said support for rotation about vparallel vertical axes, a forwardly extending adjustable supporting structure mounted upon and supported by each turntable, a drilling tool mounted on the outer extremity of each supporting structure, and driving connections between said motor and said drilling tools. In a drilling apparatus, a portable support, a motor thereon, horizontal turntables mounted on said support for rotation about parallel vertical axes, a forwardly extending adjustable supporting structure mounted upon and supported by each turntable, a drilling tool mounted on the outer extremity of each supporting structure, driving connections between said motor and said drilling tools, and mechanism driven by said motor` for propelling said support.

In a drillingfapparatus, a wheeled truck, a motor thereon for driving the truck wheels to propel the apparatus along a trackway, an elongated supporting arm pivotally mounted at its rear end on said truck for swinging movement about angularly disposed axes including a horizontal pivotal axis, a drilling. tool adjustably mounted on the outer extremity of said arm, mechanism for rotating said arm about its longitudinal axis to move said drilling tool into different positions about said longitudinal axis, mechanism driven by said motor for swinging said arm about its horizontal pivotal axis to swing the same vertically to position said drilling tool into different parallel positions, said arm being swingable horizontally to position said drilling tool into different parallel positions at opposite sides of said truck, and driving connections between said motor and said drilling tool.
27. In a drilling apparatus, a portable support, an elongated supporting arm pivotally mounted on said support for swinging movement about a horizontal pivot axis, a drilling tool adjustably mounted on the outer extremity of said arm, a motor, and mechanism driven by said motor for swinging said arm upwardly and downwardly about its pivot to position said drilling tool into different parallel planes and including a driving element arranged with its axis aligned with the arm pivot axis.
28. In a drilling apparatus, a portable support, a pair of independently adjustable elongated supporting structures mounted at their rear ends on said support and adjustable in horizontal and vertical directions relative to said support, a drilling tool swivelly mounted on the outer extremity of each supporting structure, said supporting structures being adjustable as aforesaid relative to said support and said tools relative to said supporting structures to position the drilling tools to drill a series of parallel holes extending in a direction longitudinally of the apparatus and at any desired position in a working face in advance of the apparatus, and motor operated means including driving elements common to the drive of both tools for driving said tools and for eiiecting one of the adjustments of said supporting structures relative to said support.

In a drilling apparatus, a portable support, a pair of independently adjustable elongated supporting structures mounted at their rear ends on said supports and adjustable in horizontal and vertical directions relative to said support, a drilling tool swivelly mounted on the outer extremity of each supporting structure about axes extending transversely of the longitudinal axes of said supporting structures, said supporting structures being adjustable as aforesaid relative to said support and said tools relative to said supporting structures to position the drilling tools to drill a series of parallel holes extending in a direction longitudinally of the apparatus and at any desired position in a working face in advance of the apparatus, and motor operated means including driving elements common to the drive of both tools for driving said tools and for effecting a certain adjustment of said supporting structures relative to said support.
