This invention relates to 'mining machines, and more particularly to an improved adjustable kerf cutting mechanism fora. coal mining machine.

Arranged at the lopposite front corners of the machine frame arcguide sheaves 14, 14,- While arranged at the opposite sides of the machine in advance of the feed operating and controlling drums are guide sheaves 15 and 16. Arranged at the opposite rear corners of the machine frame are sets of guide sheaves l7 and 18. The feeding and controlling cables may be extended from the feed operating and controlling drums in any preferred direction about the guide sheaves v in the manner well understood by those skilled in the art. During cutting from rightr to left in accordance with the room and pillar system, the 80,. feed cable is extended from the feed drum 10 about the 'front guide sheave 14at the advancing side of the machine and laterally along the coal face to a suitable anchor located at the left hand rib, while they controlling cable 13 is extended 85 around the guide sheave 16 and the guide sheave 18 at the rear corner of the' machineand then rearwardly to a suitable anchor located at the right hand rib. The machine is then sumped inand fed transversely across the coal face. During cutting from left to right, the feed cables are arranged in an opposite manner 'and the cutter chain is of course reversed.

manner described in my copending application, Ser. No. 658,803, filed Feb. 27, 1933, the feed operating and controlling drums 10 and 11. Supported on the hub of the bevel gear is a bearing sleeve 28 on'which there is rotatably mounted a .drive sleeve 29 having clutch teeth 30 connectible by a sliding clutch element 31 in interlocking relation with the bevel gear for driving thereby. The clutch element 31 is slidably mounted on the 'vertical shaft 26 and is operated by a clutch shipper sleeve 32 also slidably mounted on the shaft and having depending ears 33 connected to a pivoted shipper member 34. This shipper member is fixed to a transversely extending operating rod 35 having at the advancing side of the machine an operating member 36. The bearing 28 and sleeve 29 are held against vertical displacement by a retaining member 37 overlying the bearing and sleeve and xed by a bolt 38 to the vertical shaft 26 in the manner shown in Fig. 4. Arranged between the sleeve 29 and the cutter chain is an extensible driving connection so that the cutter chain may be driven irrespective of the adjusted position thereof with respect to the ma- 1 chine frame, and this extensible driving connecution herein comprises lateral lugs 39 lformed on the drive sleeve 29 and traversed by openings 40 receiving pivot pins or bolts 41 to which are pivotally connected at 42 driving arms 43, herein three in number, in turn horizontally connected, 'as by pins or bolts 44 at their outer extremities, to cooperating driving arms 45. The inner adjacent ends of the arms 45 project between lateral ears on the lower arms 43 thereby forming a very mounted in bores 47 formed within lateral lugs 48 integral with anupper drive sleeve 49. The drive sleeve 49 is keyed aty 50 to a chain sprocket 51 the cutter chain 9. The cutter chain drive sprocket is journaled in bearing sleeves 52 mounted within the top and bottom plates 53 and 54, respectively, ofthe cutter bar 8. Formed inte- 7 gral with the cutter bar and projecting upwardly and shrouding the rearward portion of the' cutter chain isa guard flange 55, this guard flange encircling the rearward portion of the cutter chain and extending longitudinally in parallel relation Yalong the opposite sides of a cutterbar supporting frame 56. This cutter bar supporting frame has formed thereon integral guide elements 57 extending vertically at opposite sides of the cutter supporting frame and having formedtherein ver- 'tical guideways 58 engaging vertical guides 59 integral with the machine frame at the opposite The improved mechanism for adjusting the elevation of the cutter bar relative to the machine frame, generally designated at 6, is arranged at the forward end of the machine frame and the vertical guiding means for the cutter supporting frame are arranged longitudinally of the machine between the adjusting T e'nd of the machine frame.
The improved means for adjusting the cutter bar in a vertical direction into different parallel putting positions relative to the machine frame ,comprises a large hand wheel 61 disposed between Vthe cutter supporting frame and the machine frame and operable from either side of the machine. This hand wheel is keyed at 62 to the lower end of a tubular element 63, the latter having formed thereonat its upper end an adjusting nut 64. This adjusting nut is threadedly connected to an adjusting screw 65 engaging the upper plate of the cutter bar and iixed against rotative movement relative thereto, the screw having asquared portion 66 tting a square socket in the upper cutter bar plate. Secured, as by bolts 67, to the lower plate of the cutter bar is a tubular element 68 which surrounds and houses the tubular element 63, the element 63 telescoping within the element 68 when the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 4. The lower end of the tubular element 63 is mounted in a bearing 69 supported Within a bearing retaining element '70 secured to the top of the frame section 3. It will thus be seen that when the hand wheel 6l is manually rotated, the nut 64 rotates therewith, and as a result, the adjusting screw 65 moves axially in a vertical direction to effect vertical adjustment of the cutter bar, the cutter bar being guided during such adjustment by the guideways 53 cooperating with the vertical guides59. During vertical advso justment of the cutter bar, a driving relation between the drive sleeve 29 and the sprocket driving iswell known to those skilled in the art, a more detailed description of themode ofoperation of the machine is'considered unnecessary. If it isf. desired to adjust the plane of operation of the cutter, bar with respect to the mine floor, this may be accomplished simply by rotating the hand Wheel to operate the adjusting screw mechanism. As a result of this invention, it will be noted that an improved adjustable kerf cutting mechanism is provided having improved transmission means whereby a constant drive is maintained between the parts relatively movable during adjustment of the ker-f cutter and in a simpliiied manner. vItwill further be noted that an improved adjustable kerf cutting mechanism is provided for a mining machine of the room and lpillar `type andhaving improved adjusting mechanism and improved mechanism for driving the kerf cutter, both the adjusting means and the cutter driving means being of; an extremely simple design having relatively few and inexpensive rnoving parts which may be manufactured andreplaced at a minimum of expense. These and other uses and advantages of the improved mining machine Wifll be clearly apparent tol those skilled in the art. y
While there is in this application'specically described one form which the invention may assume in practice, it will be understood that this form of thesame is shown for purposes of illusrearward portion of said cutter overlying the rearward portion of said frame land adjustable into parallel cutting positions relative thereto, mechanism disposed between said kerf cutter and said machine frame for adjusting said kerf cutter as aforesaid, and motor operated mechanism for driving said kerf cutter irrespective of its adjusted position relative to said frame.

In a mining machine, a machine frame adapted to rest upon and slide in any direction over the mine floor,- a horizontal kerf cutter superimposed on said machine frame and projecting forwardly of, and in parallelism with the major dimension of, said frame and with the rearward portion of said cutter overlying the rearward portion oi said frame and adjustable into parallel cutting positions relative thereto, mechanism disposed between said kerf cutter and said machine frame for adjusting said kerf cutter as aforesaid, and motor operated mechanism for driving said ker cutter irrespective of its adjusted position relative to said frame, said adjusting mechanism arranged adjacent the forward end of the machine frame in advance of said driving mechanism.
3. In a mining machine, a machine frame, a horizontal kerl cutter superimposed on said Inachine frame and overlying the saine and adjustable into parallel cutting positions relative thereto, mechanism disposed between said ker cutter and said machine frame for adjusting said kerf cutter as aforesaid, and motor operated mechanism for driving. said kerf cutter irrespective of its adjusted position relative to said frame, said adjusting mechanism arranged adjacent the forward end ci the machine frame and said driving mechanism adjacent the rearward end thereof.
4. In a mining machine, a machine frame, a horizontal keri cutter mounted in superimposed, overlying relation on said frame, a frame overlying said machine trame and supporting said keri cutter and said cutter supporting frame having depending vertical guideways, upstanding guides projecting above the top of said frame on the opposite sides of said machine frame and cooperating with said guideways, and mechanism arranged between the top of said machine frame and said cutter supporting frame and disposed adjacent the forward end of the machine frame in advance of said guideways for elevating said kerf cutter.
5. In a mining machine, a machine frame, a horizontal korf cutter mounted in superimposed overlying relation on said frame, a frame supporting said kerf cutter and harming depending vertical guideways, upstanding guides on the opposite sides of said machine frame and cooperating with said guideways, mechanism arranged between said machine frame and said cutter supporting frame and disposed adjacent the forward end of the machine frame in advance of said guideways for elevating said kerf cutter, and motor operated mechanism arranged on said machine frame at the rear of said guideways for driving said kerf cutter.
6. In a mining machine, a machine frame, a kerf cutter mounted on said frame for bodily adjustment into `parallel cutting positions re1- ative thereto, a motor carried by said frame and 4relative to which said kerf cutter is adjustable,
and driving connections between said motor and said lrerf cutter operative irrespective of the adjusted position of said kerf cutter relative thereto and including relatively pivoted driving elements hinged together. and interposed between the top of said frame and said kerf cutter and rotatable during vkerl? cutter drive rabout alined'axes, -said elements having relative pivotal movement during adjustment of sai'd kerf cutter.

In a mining machine, a machine frame, .a korf cutter mounted on said frame for bodily adjustment into parallel cutting'positions relative thereto, a motor carried by said frame and relative to which said kerf cutter vis adjustable, and driving connections betweensaidmotor and said kerf cutteroperative irrespective or the adjusted position of said kerf cutter relative thereto land including relatively pivoted driving arms'hinged together and interposed between the top of said frame and said keri cutter and rotatable during kerf cutter drive about axes perpendicular to the parallel kerf cutting portions of the bar, vsaid. elements having relative pivotal movement during adjustment of said 'keri` cutter.
8. In a mining machine, a machine frame, a kerf cutter mounted on said frame for bodily adjustmentinto parallel cutting positions relative thereto, a motor carriedrby said frame and relative to which said kerf cutter is adjustable, and driving connections between said motor and said kei-f cutter operative irrespective of the adjusted position of said kerf cutter relative thereto and including hingedly connected drive arms and rotatable bodily about alined axes during lrerf cutter drive interposed between the top of said frames and said kerf cutter.
9. In a mining Vmachine,a machine frame, a kerf cutter mounted on said frame for ybodily adjustment into parallel cutting positions relative thereto, a motor carried by said frame and relative to which said kerf cutter is adjustable, and driving connections between said motor and said kerf cutter operative irrespective of thev adjusted position of said kerf cutter relative thereto and including hingedly connected drive arms interposed between the top of said frame and said korf cutter, said arms folding inwardly toward one another during lowering of the kerf cutter.
10. In a mining machine, a machine frame, a kerf cutter mounted on' said frame for bodily adjustment into parallel cutting positions relative thereto, a motor carried by said frame and relative to which said kerf cutter is adjustable, Aand driving connections between said motor and said kerf cutter operative irrespective of the adjusted position of said'kerf cutter vrelative thereto including a driving element operatively connected to the kmotor and projecting above the top of said frame, a driving element operatively connected to the kerf cutter, and extensible hing-- edly connected elements operatively connecting said driving elements in driving relation and interposed between the top of said frame and said kerf cutter.
11. In a mining machine, a machine frame, a kerf cutter superimposed on said frame, a frame supporting said kerf cutter, said cutter supporting frame adjustable into different elevated positions relative to said machine frame to vary the elevation of said korf cutter, mechanism for adjusting said cutter supporting frame relative to said machine frame as aforesaid, a motorfcarried by said machine frame, and driving connections between said motor and said kerf cutter operative irrespective of the adjusted positions Aof said kerf cutter relative to said machine frame `and including an element journaled on said machine frame and projecting above the top of the latter, an element journaled on Asaid cutter Supporting frame, and extensible driving connectionsoper- Iso':
atively connecting said elements and interposed between the top of said frame and said kerf cutter, said connections including transmission elements having relative swinging movement during adjustment of the kerf cutter.

In a mining machine, a machine frame, a kerf cutter superimposedon said frame, a frame supporting said kerf cutter, said cutter supporting frame adjustable into-different elevated positions relative to said machine frame to vary the' elevation of rsaid kerf cutter, mechanism for adjusting said cutter supporting frame relative to said 'machine frame as aforesaid, a motor carried by said machine frame, .and driving connections between said motor and'said kerf cutter operative irrespective of the adjusted position of saidy kerf cutter relative to said machine frame and including an element journaled on'said machine frame and projecting above the top of the latter, an element journaled on said cutter supporting frame, and extensible driving connections operatively connecting said elements in driving relation and interposed between the top of said frame and said kerf cutter, said connections including hingedly connected arms pivotally connected to said elements, respectively.
13. In a mining machine, a machine frame, a kerf cutter superimposed on said frame, a frame supporting said kerf cutter, said cutter supporting frame adjustable into different elevated positions relative to said machine frame `to vary the elevation of said kerf cutter, mechanism for adjusting said cutter supporting frame relative to said machine frame as aforesaid, a motor carried by said machine frame, and driving connections` between said motor and said kerf cutter operative irrespective of the adjusted position of said kerf cutter relative to said machine frame and including an element journaled on said mal chine frame and projecting above the top of the latter, an element journaled on said cutter supporting frame, an extensible driving connections operatively connecting said elements comprising arms pivotally connected to said elements, respectively, and interposed between the top of said frame and said kerf cutter, said pivotally 'connected elements hinged together at their adjacent ends.
14. In. a mining machine, a machine frame, a kerf cutter superimposed on said frame, a frame supporting said kerf cutter, said cutter supporting frame adjustable into different elevated positions relative to said machine frame to vary the elevation 'of said kerf' cutter, mechanism for adjusting said cutter supporting frame relative to saidmachine frame as aforesaid,a motor carried by `said machine frame, and driving connections between said motor and said kerf cutter operative irrespective of the the adjusted position of said kerf cutter relative to said machine frame and including an element journaled on said machine frame and projecting above the top of the latter, an element journaled on said cutter supporting frame, an extensible driving connections operatively connecting said elements comprising arms pivotally connected to said elements,
respectively, and interposed between the top of said frame and said kerf cutter, said arms hinged together vat their adjacent ends, said arms swinging upwardly 'and relative to each other during elevation of said kerf cutter and folding inwardand including an element journaled on said machine frame and projecting above the top of the latter, an element journaled on said cutter supporting frame and extensible driving connections operatively connecting said elements, respectively, comprising articulated transmission elements interposedk between the top of said frame and said kerf cutter, said elements assuming different angularly related positions during adjustment ofA the kerf cutter. i

In a mining machine, a machine frame, a kerf cutter overlying and mounted in superposed relation on said machine frame and adjustable into parallel .cutting positions relative thereto, a. motor carried by the forward portion of the machine frame beneathA said kerf cutter, and operative connections between said motor and kerf cutter including driving elements larranged adjacent the rearward end of said frame, and
mechanism arranged above said motor and extending substantially vertically above the same Abetween said machine frame and said kerf cutter for adjusting said kerf cutter as aforesaid.

kerf cutter mounted in superimposed relation on said machine frame and adjustable into parallel cutting positions relative thereto, a motor carried by the forward portionl of the machine frame beneath said kerf cutter, and operative connections between said motor and kerf cutter including driving elements arranged adjacent the rearward end of said frame, and manually operable screw mechanism disposedabove the motor andv between said machine frame and said kerf cutter for adjusting said kerf cutter as aforesaid.

In a mining machine, a machine frame, a kerf cutter mounted in superimposed relation on said machine frame and adjustable into parallel cutting positions relative thereto, a motor carried by the forward portion of the machine frame beneath said kerf cutter, and operative connections between said motor and kerf cutter including driving elements arranged adjacent the rearward end of said frame, and manually operable screw mechanism disposed above the motor and between said machine frame and said kerf cutter for adjusting said kerf cutter as aforesaid, said screw mechanism including a manually rotatable hand wheel operable from either side of the machine. In a mining machine, a machine frame, a kerf cutter superimposed on said frame, a frame supporting said kerf cutter, said cutter supporting frame adjustable into different elevated positions relative to said machine frame to vary the elevation of said kerf cutter, mechanism for adjusting said cutter supporting frame relative to said machine frame as aforesaid, a motor carried by said machine frame, anddriving connections between said motor and said kerf cutter operative irrespective of the adjusted position of said kerf cutter relative to said machine frame and including an element journaled on Said machine frame, an element journaled on the cutter supporting frame, said cutter supporting frame having an annular recess surrounding said latter element and within which said element projects, and extensible driving connections operatively connecting said elements and including transmission elements having relative swinging movement during adjustment of the kerf cutter, the elements connected to said second mentioned element swinging within said recess when said cutter supporting frame is lowered into its lowermost position.
29. In a room and pillar mining machine, a machine frame adapted to rest upon and slide in any direction over the mine floor, a motor carried by said frame, feeding means driven by said motor including relatively rotatable flexible feed member engaging feeding members journaled on said frame for moving said frame laterally across the coal face during the cutting operation, a horizontal kerf cutter superimposed on said machine frame and overlying said motor and feeding mechanism, said kerf cutter adjustable into parallel cutting positions relative to the machine frame, mechanism disposed between said kerf cutter and said machine frame for adjusting said kerf cutter as aforesaid, and motor operated mechanism for driving said kerf cutter irrespective of its adjusted position relative to said machine frame.
30. In a room and pillar mining machine, a machine frame adapted to restupon and slide in any direction over the mine oor, flexible feeding means including advance and receding ilextible feeding portions for feeding said frame laterally across the coal face during the cutting op-V eration, a rigid kerf cutter superimposed on and extending lengthwise of said frame, the rearward portion of said kerf cutter overlying the rearward portion of said frame, mechanism between the forward end of said frame and said kerf cutter MORRIS P.
