Application September 14,1932, Serial No. 633,092 Claims. (Cl. 25-131) Our invention relates to improvements in form clamps of the type adapted to hold in position the sheathing of concrete forms.
One of the objects of our invention is to pro- 5 vide a novel form clamp, which is simple, cheap, strong, durable, not liable to get out of order, whichis very easily and quickly assembled into operative position, and as easily and quickly disassembled, and which will efliciently and securely hold the form sheathing.
A further object of our invention is the provision in a form clamp of a novel clamping member for bearing against the inner side of the form sheathing, and a novel spacing tie member which covers the inner end of a hole through the clamp ing member in which is located a tension member adapted to releasably engage and hold the spacing tie member against the clamping member.
Our invention provides further a novel clamping member-in combination with a tension member, whichpermits of the lateral movement of the tension 'member against the clamping member, after the sheathing has been removed, whereby the tension member may be readily released from the tie member with which it engages, and by which the clamping member may be loosened in the concrete or other set material in which it is located, so as to be easily disengaged from such set material.
The novel features of our invention are hereinafter fully described and claimed.

1 designates a portion of the form sheathing of a usual type of concrete form, and 2 are two clamping members of our improved form clamp, which members bear respectively against the inner sides of opposite portions of the sheathing 1.
The clamping members 2 are alike and each is provided therethrough with a hole 3, the inner end ofwhich terminates at two bearing surfaces 4 and 5 disposed at right angles to each other.
For covering the inner end of the hole 3 so as not to permit the mixture to be placed in the form to enter the hole, and to firmly hold each clamping member 2 against the sheathingv 1, there is provided a'spacing tie member, which, as shown comprises a flat bar 6 opposite end portions of which rest respectively on the lateral bearing surfaces 4 of the two clamping members and which respectively cover those portions of the holes 3. The tie member 6 is provided adjacent its ends with two lateral arms comprising angle pieces 7 which respectively rest against the bearing surfaces 5 and cover those portions of the holes 3 adjacent to said bearing surfaces 5. The angle pieces or arms 7 also serve to hold the clamping members 2 against the sheathing 1.
For drawing the spacing tie member tightly against theclamping members 2, there are provided two tension members comprising each a rod 8 having at its outer end ahead 9 and at its inner end having a hook 10 located in the hole 3 of the adjacent clamping member 2. The tie member 6 in those portions which reston the bearing surfaces 4 is provided with two openings 11 which respectively register'with the holes 3 adjacent thereto and which are adapted to receive respectively the hookslOof the tensioning members 8. a
For drawing outwardly'the'hook or tensioning members 8, and for holding them in drawing engagement with'the tie member 6; there are provided two wedges 12 each of which is provided with a longitudinal slot 13 through which respectively extend the hook rods or tensioning members 8. One end of each slot 13 has an enlarged portion 14 adapted to have passed therethrough the head 9 of the adjacent hook rod 8. The remaining portion of the slot 13 is of less diameter than said head 9. The wedges 12 respectively bear at their inner sides against two pairs of plates 15, each pair of which bears against two spaced apart bars 16, which in turn bear against the outer side of the adjacent sheathing 1. The latter is provided at opposite side 1001"- tions with two holes 1'7 respectively through which respectively extend the hook rods 8, the heads 9 of which are of less diameter than the holes 17, to permit of the removal over the hook rods 8 of the sheathing 1 after the mixture in the form has set and hardened.
After the form has been fastened in its operative position by our improved clamp, as shown in Fig. 1, the mixture is poured intothe form and permitted to set and harden. The tie member 6 with its arms 7 and with the hooks 10 closing the openings 11, prevent the mixture entering the holes 3 in the clamping members 2.
After the set material has hardened, the wedges 12 are moved vertically to positions in which the heads 9 of the hook rods 8 will pass through the enlarged portions 14 of the slots 13. ing 1 then may be removed by being slipped over the hook rods 8. The hook rods 8 are then swung at their outer ends so as to force their hooks 10 against the inner ends of the clamping members 2 respectively, thus loosening the latter which can then be slid outwardly out of the set material. The removal fromthe set material of the clamping members 2 permits the hooks 10 of the hook rods 8 being moved out of the openings 11 of the tie member 6, and thus freeing the hook rods. v The arms 7'or angle pieces of the tie membe 6 anchor the latter securely in the setma'terial. The arms 7 thus effect the double function of anchoring the tie member 6 and of closing the inner portions of the holes 3, the lateral portions of which are closed by the tie member and the hooks 10.
By having the tie member close the inner end portion of the hole 3, the plastic mixture is prevented from entering the clamping member 2 so as to interlock, when it sets, the clamping member and the hook 10. Thus, after the form has been removed, the clamping member can be readily and easily moved longitudinally outwardly on the tensioning member 8 to a position permitting free swinging of the latter for the dis-,
engagement of the hook 10 from the tie member 6.
It will be noted that the hook 10 is of such size as to prevent it. from passing outwardly through the clamping member, so that, when the parts are not in use, there is no liability of their becoming separated from each other, with possible loss.
We do not limit our invention to the structure shown and described, as many niodificationswithin the scope of the appended claims, maybe 'made without departing from the spirit of our invention.
What we claim is:-
1. In a form clamp, an inwardly tapering clamping member having a hole therethrough, a spacing tie member having means forclosing the inner end of said hole and for holding said clamping member against the inner side of th'e form sheathing, and a tensioning member adaptedfor lateral movement in said hole and against" said clamping member, for loosening the latter in the set material in the form, and having means for releasably engaging and drawing said tie member The sheathing member against the inner side of the form sheathing, and having an opening communicating with said hole, and a tensioning member adapted for lateral movement in said hole and against said clamping member, for loosening the latter in the set material in the form, and having a hook adapted for entering said opening and releasably engaging and drawing said tie member against said clamping member, the latter, when the sheathing is removed, being movable on said tensioning member to and from its operative position against said tie member.
3. In a form clamp, a clamping member having a hole therethrough, a spacing tie member in its operative position .covering the inner end of said hole and holding said clamping member against the inner side of the form sheathing, and a tensioning member extending into and adapted for lateral movement in said hole and against said clamping member and releasably engaging and drawing said tie member against said clamping member, the latter, when the sheathing is removed, being movable on said tensioning member to and from its operative position against said tie member. 4. In a form clamp, a clamping member having a hole therethrough and at the innerend of said hole having two bearing surfaces, a spacing tie member in its operativeposition in the form resting against said surfaces and covering the inner end of said hole and holding said clamping member against the inner side of the form sheathing, the portion of said tie member resting on one of said surfaces having an opening communicating with said hole, and a tensioning member'extending into and adapted for lateral movement in said hole and against said clamping member, and having a hook adapted to enter said opening and to engage said tie member and draw the latter against said clamping member, thelatter, when the sheathing is removed, being movable on said tensioning member to and from its operative position against said tie member.
5. In a form clamp, a clamping member having a hole therethrough the inner end of which terminates attwo bearing surfaces at angles to each other on said clamping member, a spacing tie member covering one of said surfaces an'din that portion having an opening communicating with I said hole and having an arm resting against the other bearing surface and covering that portion of said hole and holding said clamping member against the inner side of the form sheathing, and a tensioning member movablelaterally in said hole andagainst said clamping member and having a hook adapted to enter said opening and engage and drawsaid tie member against said clamping member, the latter, when the sheathing is removed, being movable on said tensioning member to and from its operative position against said tie member. In a formclamp, a clamping member having a hole therethrough, a spacing tie member covering the inner end of said hole and bearing against and holding said clamping member against the inner side of the form sheathing, and a tensioning member extending through said sheathing and into said hole and-releasably engaging and drawing said tie member against said clamping member, said clamping membenwhen the sheathing is removed, being slidable longitudinally outwardly on said tensioning member to a position permitting free movement'and disengagement of the latter from said tie, member. 7. In a form clamp, a clamping member having a hole therethrough, a spacing tie member covering the inner end of said hole and bearing against and holding said clamping member against the inner side of the form sheathing, and a tensioning member extending through said sheathing and into said hole and having at its inner end a hook pivotally engaging and drawing said tie member against said clamping member, said clamping member, when the sheathing is removed, being slidable longitudinally outwardly on said tensioning member to a position permitting free swinging of the hook out of engagement with said tie member.
8. 10. In a form clamp, a clamping member having a hole therethrough, a spacing tie member bearing against and holding said clamping member against the inner side of the form sheathing, and a tensioning member extending through said sheathing and into said hole and pivotally engaging and drawing said tie member against said clamping member, and, when the sheathing is removed, being adapted to be swung so as to bear at one time With an inward pressure against said tie member and with an outward pressure against said clamping member, the latter being slidable longitudinally outwardly on said tension member to permit engagement of said tensioning member with or its disengagement from said tie member, said tensioning member having means for engaging and holding said clamping member from sliding off from said tensioning member 'at the inner end of the latter.
