" 4 Claims.
This invention relates to electric ovens and has particular reference to an electrically heated oven for roasting, toasting, drying or warming edible materials such as nuts, cereals, coffee or other similar food stuffs.
The primary object of the invention is to provide an electric device of this character which shall embody features resulting in greater safety and convenience, which shall be less apt to be improperly operated and which will not to any appreciable extent break up the frangible materials such as nuts or cereals which may be toasted or warmed therein. Other and more limited objects will become apparent as the specification proceeds.
Fig. 1 is a vertical sectional view, Fig. 2 is a top plan view, Fig. 3 is a front elevation, Fig. 4 is a detail horizontal section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 5 is a diagrammatic view showing the 20 electrical connections.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings, the numeral indicates a base which may be of any suitable form, even a counter or table provided with means for mounting the standard 11 2 for rotation about a vertical axis. The base 10 is provided with an opening 12 into which a set screw 13 extends. The standard 11 is provided with a body portion 14, a shoulder 15, a reduced portion 16 extending from the shoulder and 30 having a groove 17 therearound for reception of the set screw 13 and a bifurcated upper termination comprising the two parts 18 and 19. The part 18 has a laterally extending projection 20 provided with an opening 21 in which is received a plunger 22 and its controlling spring 23. The opening 21 has a restricted portion and a reduced end of the plunger 22 passes therethrough and is connected to a head 24.
Mounted upon the standard 11 is a bracket indicated generally by the numeral 25 and affording support for a shaft 26 upon a flange 27 of which the oven is mounted, a motor 28 which rotates said shaft, suitable reducing gears connecting said motor and said shaft and a switch box 29 from 45 which said motor is controlled. The bracket 25 also affords support for a fixed tube 30 upon which is mounted a heating element indicated generally by the numeral 31. The bracket is formed with a passage 32 registering with the tube 30 and extending around the edge thereof whereby to connect with the switch box 29.
As will be clear from the drawings, the bracket 25 is provided with a lower wall 33, an upstanding portion 34 in which is secured a bearing 35 for the shaft 26, a projection 36 provided with an opening 37 adapted to receive the plunger 22. a
pair of lugs 38 and 39, a housing or gear case 40 and a handle portion 41. Extending through the lugs 18, 19, 38 and 39 is a pin 42 upon which between the lugs 38 and 39 is a helical spring 43 having its ends extending into openings in the 0 members 14 and 33. This spring is so positioned as to tend to cause rotation in a clockwise direction, looking at the device as in Fig. 1. The switch box 29 is secured to the portion 33 of the member 25 by any suitable means such as screws (not shown). The motor 28 is mounted on the portion 33 and drives, by means of a worm on its armature shaft 44, the worm gear 45. This gear is connected to the shaft 46 and through the medium thereof drives the worm 47 which meshes with the worm gear 48 carried by the shaft or sleeve 26. These gears are suitably enclosed as is clear from Figs. 1 and 2.
A plate 49 may be secured in covering relation to the housing portion 40 of the casting 25. The shaft 26 is journaled at one end in the bearing 35 and at the other end by means of the bushing 50 on the tube 30 which is held from rotation and supported at one end by the casting 25 and set screw 51. The tube 30 itself having positive support at one end on the casting 25 and being held from rotation by the set screw 51 is supported at its other end by a bushing 52 within the tube 26.
Secured to the flange 27 of the tube 26 as by studs 53 is an end piece 54 constituting a bottom indicated generally by the numeral 55. This end piece is somewhat dish-shaped having a flange 56 extending therearound adiacent the edge and defining a shouldered seat for the reception of the remainder of the oven 55. Extending around the flange 56 in an annular depression formed therein is a gasket 5'7. Adapted to be attached to the end piece 54 is an open ended body portion comprising a non-circular or oval middle portion 58 and a tapering terminal portion 59. As is clearly indicated in Fig. 3, the member 58 is made up in cross section of two semicircular portions joined by straight connecting parts whereby to form a flattened circle or oval. Extending around the M end of the member 58 adjacent the end piece 54 isan annular member 60 to which the part 58 may be connected by a tight frictional grip or by welding or soldering and which is adapted to engage the gasket 57 whereby to seal the end piece 54 to the middle piece 58. Extending from the member 58 is the tapering terminal portion 59 which operates to form in all positions of the oven a means for preventing material within the oven from falling out.
Quick release means may be provided for connecting the parts 54 and 58. These preferably include lugs 61 to which are pivoted at 62 handles 63. Pivotally connected to the handles 63 at 64 are links 65 to which hooks 66 are connected. The heating element 31 is mounted on the end of the tube 30 by a set screw 67 and includes a heating element 68 supported by members 69 together with a reflector '70 and suitable supporting means therefor. A lamp '71 is provided for illuminating the material within the oven. If desired, the oven may be made of transparent material and in this case the lamp '71 may be omitted if desired.
In Fig. 1 I have shown a source of electric current 72 which may be a piece of ordinary lamp cord terminating in the usual plug adapted to be received in an ordinary electric receptacle. The source of current 72 leads to the switch box 29 in which switches 73 and Mare located. Leading from the switch box 29 is a cable '75 which carries conductors leading to the heating element 31 and the lamp '71.. Suitable leads are carried from the switch box to the motor .28. Referring now to Fig. .5it will be seen that the lamp '71, the heating element 31 and the motor 28 are connected in parallel. The lamp '71 is not provided with any switch. The switch '73 is connected so as to control'both the motor 28 and the heating element 31. The switch "74 controls the heating element alone whereby it [may be used or not as desired, when the motor is running. With this connection it is impossible to energize the heating element31 except when the motor is running. This provides a safety arrangement which prevents burning the food material by exposing the same to the heating element without motion or agitation.
It is believed that the operation of this device will be obvious from -the foregoing. However, it may be stated that the oval cross section of the oven results in a sufiicient agitation of the material such as nuts without having a tendency to :break them as would bethe case if agitators were employed. The oval cross section is to be considered as illustrative only, it being possible to use other shapes such as for example polygonal. The device normally assumes theposition shown in Fig. 1, namely a tilt of the shaft 26 0f 8 to the horizontal. It is not necessary that the tilt be exactly 8 but that angle has been found desirof the device. The complete enclosure of all gears and wiring renders the device perfectly safe even for inexperienced operators and careless ones.
From the foregoing it will be clear that I have provided a'device which is well suited for its intended purpose and while I have shown and described the preferred embodiment, I do not wish to be limited to the details thereof except in accordance with the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. In a device of the character described, a base, a single standard rising therefrom, a bracket pivotally mounted on said standard, a shaft rotatably mounted on said bracket, means carried by said bracket for imparting rotation to said shaft, and an oven secured to said shaft for rotation therewith and comprising an end piece secured to said shaft and an open ended body portion removably secured to said end piece and oval in cross section.
2. In an electrical heating device of the character described, the combination of a support, an oven pivotally mounted on said support and rotatable with respect thereto, an electrical heating element disposed within said oven, means for rotating said oven about said heating element, said oven having a smooth interior and being oval in cross section and having one end open whereby the contents of the oven may be dumped through said open end.
3. In an electrical heating device acter described, the combination of of the chara support, a
bracket pivotally mounted on said support, a shaft journaled in said bracket, an oven connected with said shaft so as to rotate therewith and having one end open, means for rotating said shaft, an electrical heating element disposed within said oven and held stationary wit respect thereto, said oven compri ing an end piece and asheil detachably secured thereto, said shell having a 1,.-
smooth interior and being oval in cross section whereby the contents of the oven will be agitated when the oven is rotated.
4. In an electrical heating device of the character described, the combination of a support, a bracket pivotally mounted on said support, a shaft journaled in said bracket, an oven connected with said shaft so as to rotate therewith and having one end open, means for rotating said shaft, an
electrical heating element disposed within said oven and held stationary with respect thereto, said oven comprising an end piece and a shell detachably secured thereto, said shell having a smooth interior and being oval in cross section "whereby the contents of the oven will be agitated when the oven is rotated, said bracket consisting of a single casting having a bore extending therethrough adapted to receive therein the electrical connections for said heating element.
