Description

NOV. 13, J. VOC'SE BATTERY IGNITION SYSTEM Filed Jan. 6. 1933 Claw/jaw] W396,
Patented Nov. 13, 1934 NITED STATES) ATENT OFF-ICE 3 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in battery ignition systems, and more particularly to an ignition system provided with means for automatically reducing the resistance of the primary circuit and increasing the number of ampere turns in the primary when the voltage of the battery falls below a-predetermined value, as is the case when the starting motor is connected to the battery. When the starting switch is closed,
a heavy drain on the battery takes place, which results in diminished voltage and consequently the current supplied to the primary of the ignition coil is insufiicient to cause current of proper voltage and amperage to be induced in the secondary winding for producing adequate sparks.
The objects of the invention are attained by providing in a battery ignition system, a coil comprising two primary windings and means for electro-magnetically connecting said primary windings in parallel in the primary circuit, said means for electro-magnetically connecting the two primary windings in the circuit comprising a voltage relay which is actuated by variations in the voltage of the circuit. The automatic lessening of the resistance in the primary circuit when the voltage in the battery circuit falls below its rated capacity compensates for the l "ge insufllciency without regard to its cause'an 'without the intervention of manually or mechanically operated means. a 1
The drawing shows a diagrammatic view of a battery ignition system embodying my invention.
In the drawing, the battery 10 is connected to a coil having windings 11 and 12 connected in parallel to the primary circuit, said windings being connected in parallel to lines 13 and 14 between the battery 10 and interrupter'15 across the contacts of which is connected the condenser In that part 13' of the line 13 between the windings 11 and 12 is a voltage relay comprising a core 16, relay winding 1'7, armature 18, contact 19, fixed contact 20, and leaf spring 21 fixed at one end to the armature 18 and bearing at its free end on the bracket 22 fixed to the armature.
The secondary winding is indicated at 23 and a distributor at 24.
Normally the voltage in the primary circuit is sufiicient to draw the armature 18 to the core 16, thereby separating the contacts 19 and 20, and current flowsthrough line 13, winding lland line 14. When the voltage drops below its rated capacity, the spring 21 draws the armature 18 away from the core 16, the contacts 19 and 20 are closed and current flows through linev 13, 13' and winding 12 as well as through line 13 and winding 11, to line 14, etc., thereby decreasing the resistance and increasing the ampere turns of the primary winding. I
' I claim: I
1. Abattery ignition system comprising a coil having two primary windings, and means for electro-inagnetically connecting said windings in parallel-1h the primary circuit, said means including a relay automatically actuated by variations in the voltage of the primary circuit.
2. A- battery ignition system comprising a pair of primary windings and a voltage relay adapted to automatically connect said windings in parallel when the voltage in the circuit drops below its rated value. v
3. A battery ignition system comprising a coil having two primary windings adapted to be connected in parallel in the primary circuit, and means for electro-magnetically disconnecting one of said primary windings.
