My invention relates 'to the eye or eyelet tape of hook and eye or eyelet tape fastener means for garments.

The general object of the invention is to pro- Vide an eyelet tape of simplified construction and of a character such that when the hooks of the hook and eye tape are in engagement with the eyelets the bills of the hooks which project through the eyelets are concealed and protected. It also is an object of the invention to provide an eyelet tape for effectively concealing and protecting the bills of the hooks which project through the eyelets, which tape is of a construction such that a smaller quantity of fabric material is required than is the c'ase'with similar tape heretofore known, as far as I am aware.

A further object of the invention is to provide a fastener tape consisting of a strip of fabric folded along a line parallel or practically so with the opposite edges of the said strip and having interposed between the folded portions of said strip reinforcing means consisting of one or more separate strips, one of the folds 'of the folded strip and the said separate strip or strips having fastener elements, such as eyes or eyelets, se-

cured thereto and the said tape also comprising a line of stitching fastening the three plies together, the said line of stitching preferably crossing the fastener elements and including laterally or offset stitches which engage portions of the said fastener elements,lthe said offset stitches also engaging an edge of one side of the said folded strip which is folded over the edge of the other fold of said strip and the adjoining edge of the separate strip.

To the foregoing and other ends my invention comprehends the construction as hereinafter described in detail, particularly pointed out in the claims and as illustrated in the drawing wherein I have shown a preferred form of embodiment of the invention. However, it should be understood that the invention may be embodied in other forms of construction than that shown and that changes in the details of construction may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the invention.

The tape comprises a strip of suitable fabric folded along a line as indicated at l parallel, or practically so with the opposite edges 2 and 3 thereof. Interposed between the opposite folds 0r sides 4 and 5 is a reinforcing means consisting, in the construction as illustrated, of a strip of fabric 6 the inner edge '7 of which is located in adjoining relation tothe inner side of the fold at l. The opposite edge 8 is located in adjoining relation to and preferably is flush or approximately so with the edge y2 of the fold or side 4. Although I have shown the reinforcing means as consisting of a single strip 6, it is to be understood that it may consistr of a plurality of strips, two or more. Wherever in the claims lreference is made to a single strip it is intended .to include thereby not onlyY a single strip vbut a plurality of strips as well.` The folds or sides 4 and 5 may be regarded as the top and bottom sides respectively of the eyelet tape. The fold or side 5 is of considerably greater width than the fold or side 4, as` shown in the drawing, so that an extended portion 9 is provided which is folded over the ledges 2 and 8 of the side or fold 4 and strip 6 respectively to conceal the same. The edge 3 in the completed tape terminates in adjoining relation to the rear edges of tubular eyelets l0 which are secured in openingsllprovided at intervals in the side or fold 4 and the intermediate strip 6 or plurality of such strips in case two or more should be employed in lieu of the single strip shown. These eyelets respectively consist of vtubular members having flanges V12 at their'opposit'e ends between which the edges of the fabric of the side 4 and the one or more strips 6 surrounding the openings 11 are located and by which the said edges are clamped so as to fasten the Isaid eyelets inV place in said openings. For the purpose of providing additional means for securing the eyelets l0y in place-in the openings l1 I have provided a line ofl stitching 1 5 the stitches of which extend through all of the plies of the tape. The line of stitching extends lengthwise of the tape and preferably, though not necessarily, crosses the eyelets 10 and preferably also nearer their rear edge portions than their front edge portions. Preferably also a number of stitches, as indicated at 16, are offset so as to overlie and engage the rear portions of the respective eyelets. These stitches also engage the edge portion of the extension 9 of the bottom side or fold 5 of the eyelet tape, as shown at 17. By thus engaging the edge portion 3 of the bottom side or fold 5 the folded over portion 9 thereof is re- 110 tained in place so as to conceal at all times the rear edges 2 and 8 of the side 4 and intermediate 1strip (or strips) 6 respectively of the tape strucure.

If vdesired the intermediate strip 6 may consist of fabric somewhat thicker and heavier and therefore stronger than the fabric of the folded strip.

By my invention I am enabled to produce a tape of extremely simple construction which is durable and which has the requisite strength for use as a part of the fastening meansfor garments of wearing apparel.

Havingl thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is;

1. An eyelet tape for garments comprising a strip of fabric folded lengthwise along a line y substantially parallel with the opposite edges thereof and nearer to one edge of said strip than to the other edge thereof a separate reinforcing strip located intermediate the opposing folds of said folded strip, eyelets extending through one side of said folded strip and the said reinforcing strip and'being fastened thereto, the said eyelets being located at desired spaced intervals lengthwise of the said strips and in spaced relation to thev folded edge of the folded strip, the wider fold of said folded strip being folded over the edge of the narrower fold of said folded strip and secured thereabout and a line of stitching extending lengthwise of the said strips and fastening the reinforcing strip and the opposite sides of the folded strip together, the said stitching engaging the said eyelets; y

2. An eyelet tapecomprising a strip of fabric folded lengthwise along a line nearer to one edge of said strip than tofthe other edge thereof, a separate reinforcing strip of fabricy looatedvbetween the folds of said strip, the narrower of the said folds and the reinforcing strip having holes at intervals therein, eyelets located in said holes and having means engaging the edges of said holes for fastening the said eyelets in place, the

edge portion of the wider of the folds of the said first named strip being folded over the edgev of the narrower of said folds and the adjoining edge of the reinforcing strip, the edge of said folded,

portion terminating inI adjoining relation to the `said eyelets, and a line of stitching extending lengthwise of the tape and fastening the folds of the first named strip and the reinforcing strip to.- gete'r, `the said stitchingextending across the said eyelets and having offset ,stitches extending in directions substantially at rightangles to the line of said stitching to constitute additional fastening means for said eyelets, the said offset stitching also engaging the folded over edge of the wider of the folds of the iirst named strip.

3. An eyelet tape comprising a strip of fabric folded along a line substantially parallel with the opposite edges thereof, the line of fold being located a greater distance from one edge of the said strip than from the other, a separate reinforcing strip of fabric located between the folds of the first named strip,'one edge of Vsaid reinforcing strip being located in adjoining relation to the inner side of the fold of the first named strip joining relation to the edge of the narrower of the folds of theiirst named strip, the edge portion of the wider of said folds being folded over the edge portion of lsaid narrower fold, one of the sides or folds ofv thel rst named strip and the reinforcing strip being provided with openings which are in registered relation with ,respect to each other, oye' iets mounted the .said openings, said eyelets consisting of tubular members having outwardly extending flanges at their .opposite ends which overlie the edges ofthe said openings and, slamp the same, a line of stitching extending -lengthf wise of the said strips and fastening the folds of the rst named strip and the reinforcing strip together, the said line of vstitohios having offset stitches which engage the rear portions of the said eyelets, vthe said; offset stitohos also engaging the folded-free edge of the wider of the folds of the first namedstrip. j
