Description
W. M. REYNOLDS. Dental Spitto'On. No. 197,977. Patented Dec.-1l', 1877 mf/zasses.
N.FETERS. PHDTD-UTHOGRAFHER, WASHWGTON D C UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
' WILLIAM M. REYNOLDS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN DENTAL SPITTOONS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 197,977, dated December 11, 1877; application filed March 30, 1877'.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it knownthat I, WM. M. REYNOLDS, of the 'city of New York, county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spittoons for Dental Purposes, of which the following is a specification:
This invention consists of certain improvements in spittoons for dental purposes, and relates to that class of spittoons which are secured to the side of the operating-chair. The spittoon proper is supported in a gimbal, and is weighted at the lower part, so that it always remains level in whatever position the chair may be placed, the outer bearings of the gimbalare extended from the upper part of a rod, which fits into a tube with sufficient friction, so that the spittoon will remain in any horizontal position in which-it may be placed. The tube passes through sockets pro vided therefor in a bracket, which is rigidly secured to the chair, and it is free to move up and down therein, but is held at any desired height by a screw clamping the top socket thereon. From the bottom of the spittoon extends a flexible pipe, which conveys the waste to an appropriate receptacle therefor; or the pipe may pass through thefloor and be con nected directly to the waste-pipe. The bottom of the spittoon is also provided with a cock, which is attached to the water-faucet by a flexible pipe when it is desired to wash out the spittoon, the cock being turned off and the pipe removed when not so used. 1
But to describe my invention more particularly, I will refer to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of chair with my improved spittoon secured thereto. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same; and Fig. 3 is an enlarged view, showing a vertical section of the'spittoon and supporting-bracket.
a represents the adjustable seat of a chair, and b the back. The seat is secured to the legs a of the chair by hinges, and is held at any desired angle by the bar and pin (1. To one side of the seat a. is fastened the bracket 0, which projects upward, and is provided with two sockets, e and 0 The upper socket, e, is
split, and through the sides of it passes a thumb-screw, by means of which the .socket is clamped on the hollow shaft f, thus securely holdin g it at any desired height. In the upper end of the hollow shaft f is a rod, 9, the friction between theshaft and the rod being such that the rod will maintain any position in which it may be placed. The rod 9, at its upper end, is provided with a bifurcated arm or bracket, h, between the ends of which is diametrically pivoted the ring *5. The ring '1; is provided with two pivot-screws, z" 41, at right angles to the pivots by which it is supported, and these pivot-screws i 2" support the body lof the spittoon, which is made of metal, the receiver m being made of glass or other suitable material. To the center of the bottom of the body 1 is attached the flexible dischargepipe n, and off on one side is shown acock, 0, and part of a pipe, 19, the object of which is to pass water through the spittoon from the water-faucet when it is desired to wash it out. Instead of the cock 0, a plug or cap may be used to cover the opening when the spittoon is in use.
It is obvious, from the construction of the spittoon as just described, that it may be adjusted to any required position, and drawn to and by the patient using it, and then pushed out of the way.
Having now described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is-- 1 With a spittoon for dental purposes, the combination of the gimbal h z, substantially as hereinbefore set forth.
2. The combination of the spittoon lm and flexible discharge-pipe a, substantially as and for the purposes hereinbefore set forth.
3. In combination, the spittoon l m, gimbal h 6, rod g, hollow shaft f, and bracket 6, all constructed and operating substantially as hereinbefore set forth.
' 4. The adjustable spittoon l m, in combination with the cock 0 and pipe n, as and for the purposes hereinbefore set forth.
, WM. M. REYNOLDS.
