PASTEBOARD BOX Application February 23, 1934, Serial No. 712,518
3 Claims.
Our invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in pasteboard box construction, and more particularly to that type of box which includes a platform member carried thereby and spaced away from the box bottom. Such platforms are usually cut out to provide cavities of a suitable shape to properly receive and hold from displacement special goods designed to be carried thereby.
The main object of the invention is to provide a simple, effective and economical means whereby the platform member may be mechanically locked within the box in its proper position, thereby eliminating the labor and expense of gluing the same in place.
In the accompanying drawing Fig. 1 is an isometric View of a box and platform assembly, parts being broken away;
Fig. 2 is an isometric view of a corner of a platform member separated from the box;
Fig. 3 is an isometric View of a corner of a box body for receiving the platform corner of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a plan View of a platform member blank;
Fig. 5 is a plan view of a box body blank.
We have shown and will describe our invention only in one preferred form, being fully aware that various modifications and changes may be made without departing from the spirit and scope thereof.
1 represents a blank from which the box body is formed, the mid-portion of the blank constituting the bottom of the box. 22 are flaps at the side edges of the blank 1, which flaps may be turned up to form the sides of the box body. 3--3 are flaps at the ends of the blank which may also be turned up to form the ends of the box body. At the inside corners of the box body are notches 44 which may be formed either in the end edges of the side flaps or in the end edges of the end flaps. In this particular instance these notches are formed in the end edges of the side flaps. Ordinarily, a reinforcing base 5 is glued to the bottom of the box body so as to be part thereof. The box body is usually covered with a suitable wrapping which serves to hold the corners together and to provide a suitable deco-rative appearance. 6 represents a blank, the midportion of which constitutes a platform designed to be supported within the box in an elevated position above the bottom thereof. This blank 6 has side flaps 7-7 and end flaps 8-8. In this instance, tongues 9-9 are formed on the ends of the end flaps. When these flaps are turned down, these tongues project slightly beyond the outer surfaces of the side flaps so that when the platform member is forced into the box, the tongues 9-9 hook or snap into the aforesaid notches and mechanically lock the platform in place against removal when the goods are being detached from the platform. Heretofore, to prevent this, such platform members have been glued in box bodies. The old method involved considerable labor and expense which the present invention eliminates. In the preferred construction, the entering edges of the tongues 9'-9 are bevelled so that they may be the more easily forced into the box body. No wrapping is necessary for the platform member, although, of course, it may be employed, if desired so long as it does not interfere with the projecting interlocking tongues. Obviously any suitable cover (not shown) may be made and used, if desired, no novelty being claimed therefore herein.
We claim:
1. A box comprising a bottom with upstanding side and end walls, a platform member shaped to fit into said box with the body of the platform supported above the bottom of the box, means for interlocking said platform member in said box to hold it in place, said means including notches in the corners of said box body and tongues on the corners of said platform member projecting into said notches.
2. In a box of the character described, a box body comprising a bottom piece and upstanding sides, a platform member, means for supporting said platform member on and above the bottom of said body, and integral tongues on the platform member for mechanically interlocking said platform member in said box body to hold it in place therein, and shoulders formed by notches in the side wall of the box body at the corners thereof for engagement by said tongues to hold said platform member in place.
3. A box comprising a bottom with upstanding side and end Walls, a platform member shaped to fit into said box with the body of the platform supported upon and above the bottom of the box, and means at the corners of and integral with the platform member for interlocking said platform member in said box to hold it seated on the box bottom.
