4moccasin with my improvement attached.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM H. H. WALKER, OF MERCER, MAINE, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO NORRIS E TRUE, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOOTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 197,699, dated November 27, 1877; application led February 2, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. H. WALK- ER, of Mercer, Somerset county, Maine, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Boots, of which the following is a clear, full, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, iu which- A Figure l represents a woodmans boot or Fig. 2 is a detail view of the improvement.
My invention relates more especially to that class of rawhide boots worn by woodchoppers and fishermen, who are exposed to walking in the deep snows and it consists in so constructing the upper portion ofthe leg of the boot that it may be drawn tight or close around the leg of the wearer, in order to prevent the admission of snow into the leg of the boot.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the exact manner in which I have carried it out. i
In the drawings, A represents a rawhide boot or moccasin with the side seam closed up, in the usual way, to the point a. From that point to the top of the leg is inserted, by stitches or other suitable fastening, the gusset B, made of light flexible leather, that will fold to the leg when the outer flap O is drawn into position by means of the straps D and buckles d.
The heavy material of the bootleg is cut away on one side of the side seam from about and on this curved edge is secured the outer flap C, as shown in Fig. l.
It is evident that the introduction of the gusset B will afford an easy access for the leg into the top of the boot, while the outer iia'p, with its straps and buckles, will enable the wearer to draw the top of 4the boot close aroundthe calf of the leg, and thus effectually exclude the snow.
It is also apparent that the space in the upper end of the boot-leg, made by cutting away its side, as described, forms a convenient recess, within which the gusset readily folds, and thereby is prevented from becoming a roll or ridge to chafe the wearers leg, as is 4usual in the improved shoes and gaiters having a gusset and iiap.
l am aware that a gaiter-boot provided with a gore on one side and a buckle on the other side, with a strap passing from the gore to the buckle, is old, and such I do not claim as my invention 5 but,
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A high-top boot or boot-pac, as described,
side, and provided with aleather gusset, B,
theouter leather nap-covering C, attached to the side of the leg-straps D, and suitable fastenings, all constructed substantially as and for the purpose specified.
