Description
Sept. 25, 1934. OESTRICHER 1,974,928
VOLTAGE AMPLIFIER Filed June 22, 1955 INVENTOR.
#877530 G Oestr/cker ,BY%Q@W ATTORNEY S Patented Sept. 25, 1934 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
This invention relates to electrical apparatus and more especially to a device adapted to be introduced into the ignition circuits of spark ignited internal combustion engines.
This device belongs to that class of instruments having for its general purpose the voltage amplification of the spark occurring in the usual type of spark plugs employed in such circuits.
An object of this invention is to provide a spark amplifier of few and simple parts and construction whereby to make possible the production and sale of these devices at a reasonable price. 1
Another object is to provide in the voltage amplifier a simple and easily made electrical jump barrier which is adjustable to any desired shape.
Another object is to provide a voltage amplifier in which means is embodied to insure physical contact of the interior elements at all times and under all conditions.
Another object is to so shape the body of the voltage amplifier that two or more of such devices can be used together in a minimum of space.
A further object is to provide means to quickly dissipate the heat externally, as by aid of a metal radiator leading from the interior of the device.
Various other meritorious features of my in-' '2-2 of Figure 1,
Figure 3 is an enlarged perspective view of the electrical jump barrier, and
Figure 4 is a partial view of the closure member showing the manner of externally dissipating the heat of the interior of the amplifier.
The structure in its preferred form includes a flat cylindrical body 10 made of insulative material, a hollowed cylindrical interior 12 of slightly less diameter than the body, and a closure member 14 for the completely shielding the hollowed interior from the outside.
A terminal receiving socket 16 protrudes from the body portion 10 and a contact rivet 18 makes an electrical connection with the interior 12.
Opposite to the socket a contact bolt 20, having a head 22 seated in a recess 23, extends through the wall of the body 10 connecting the interior with the exterior. A nut 24 tightly secures the contact bolt in place, and a terminal 26 is loosely screwed on the threaded end of the bolt.
A coil spring 28 .of nearly the same diameter as the hollowed interior is compressly seated therein, several of the individual coils making contact with the contact rivet 18. Between the head of the bolt 22 and the coil spring is an electrical jump barrier generally indicated by 30. As-
shown in Figure 3 this jump barrier comprises an arcuate strip of metal 32 about which has been folded insulative tape 34. The adhesive side of the tape is pressed against the surface of the metal firmly securing it in place. Any flexible metallic material may be used for the strip, and ordinary friction tape may be used for insulatively spacing the strip from electrical contact. By
using a strip of flexible metal, the jump barrier 30 can be bent into any desired shape to conform with the surrounding walls and contacts.
For the purpose of dissipating the heat which may be generated during the operation of the device, a coil of wire 36 is mounted around-the closure member 14 and leads 38 connect the interior of the container with the 'coil of wire.
In its use in conventional internal combustion engines, the device is usually placed in the high tension line leading from the coil to the distributor, the socket and terminal constructed to fit the usual connections found in this tension line.
Having described an illustrative form of my invention various modified structures will be at once apparent to those skilled in the art and therefore I do not wish to limit myself except within the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is:
A voltage amplifier comprising a hollow cylindrical casing of insulative material closed at one end and provided with a removable plug closure at the opposite end, said casing having an integral socket for a circuit terminal projecting radially from its cylindrical wall, a contact within said socket extending through said cylindrical wall into the interior of the casing, said cylindrical casing wall provided with a recess formed in its inner fage spaced from said contact, a contact seated in said recess flush with the inner surface of the cylindrical wall and extending outwardly through said wall and terminating exteriorly thereof in a threaded extension, an arcuate metal strip shaped to conform to the inner curvature of the cylindrical wall and seated thereagainst bridging said recess and engaging said contact, a layer of insulative tape adhesively secured over both faces of said metal strip, a multiple coil spring arranged within said casing having a plurality of coils engaging said first mentioned contact and engaging said metal strip urging the same against said second mentioned contact, and a heat dissipating coil arranged between said closure plug and the edge of the cylindrical wall of the casing and having a part extending into the interior of the casing.
