This invention relates to a device for straightening hair and is designed for use with a permanent wave heating device, the general object of the invention being to provide a pair of hook members over which the hair is passed, with means for separating the members to stretch the hair.

This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.

In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawing where-, in like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:-

Figure 1 is an elevation of the device.

Figure 2 is a view of the socketed hook.

Figure 3 is a view of the other hook.

Figure 4 is a view of the stem and handle.

In this drawing, the letter A indicates one of the hook assemblies and the letter B the other hook assembly. The assembly A is formed with the socketed stem 1 and the pair of prongs 2 and 3, the prong 2 being shorter than the prong 3 and the end of the prong 3 is formed with the small forked part 4. The two prongs curve upwardly and inwardly, as shown, and the socket in the stem 1 is smooth, with its inner end rounded, as shown in dotted lines.

The member B comprises an inwrnally threaded sleeve 5 with the hook 6 thereon, the beak of the hook having a substantially right angularly arranged shank '7 thereon which connects with the upper end of the sleeve at a side portion thereof. Each of the parts 2, 3 and 6 tapers from the base to the free end, as shown.

A stem 8 is provided with a long threaded part 9, a'reduced end part 10 and a knurled or roughened handle part 11. The threaded part 9 is adapted to pass through the sleeve 5 with the reduced part 10 fitting in the socket 1 and as will be seen, the free end of this part 10 is rounded so that it can readily rotate in the socket 1. The parts are arranged as shown in Figure 1 and the hair is wrapped back and forth over the prong 2 and the prong 6, the hair being tied to the device by a string seated in the groove in the forked part 4 and, if desired, the ends of the string may be placed in the fork to avoid tying the string. Then the handle 11 is turned to rotate the stem so that the two members A and B are separated,

which, of course, stretches the hair and then the device is placed in the heater device which may be the same as used on a permanent wave machine.

This device will straighten kinky hair, as it 0 will stretch the hair to a greater extent than can be done by hand.

It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of the invention will be readily apparent.

It is to be understood that changes may be made in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.

What is claimed is:-

1. A device of the class described comprising a sleeve having a hook thereon, said sleeve being internally screw threaded, a member having a socket therein, and a hook thereon which extends in an opposite direction from the first mentioned hook, and a stem having a threaded part passing through the sleeve and a plain end part fitting in the socket whereby by turning the stem in a certain direction, the two members will be moved away from each other to stretch hair wound upon the hooks.

2. A device of the class described comprising an internally threaded sleeve having a hook at one end thereof having its beak extending toward the other end of the sleeve, a member having a; socketed stem at one end and a pair of prongs at the other end, one prong being shorter than the other, with the long prong having a forked extremity, a stem having a threaded part passing through the sleeve and a plain end part fitting in the socket, and a handle on the other end of the stem.
