42 Claims. (01. 101 423) This invention relates to copying machines operating on the hectograph principle and has particular reference to a portable self-contained type of copying machine adapted especially for duplicating menus and similar copying work on a large scale.
An object of the inventionis to, provide a complete, self-contained, compact and portable copying machine which will be highly efficient in oporation by reason of a novel arrangement and cooperation of parts, and which will provide a duplicating unit whereby the production of copying work, such as menus for luncheons, drug stores and dining cars, will be greatly expedited.
A further object is to provide a portable copying unit embodying a case with a pivoted hinged cover, the former containing the copying bed and the cover performing the dual function of a closure-means, and a complete impression unit consisting of a platen roller, 2, paper guide and finger rasping means.
A further object is to provide a device of the type described wherein the hinged cover, by its connection to the case or frame, forms a simple means for moving an impression roller over the bed plate, which inherently keeps the roller and paper guide in perfect alignment and eliminates the customary use of slide rods or other more complicated and expensive arrangements for'performing the same purpose.
A further object is to provide a duplicating device having the duplicating band carried within the frame and the cover being hinged and forming the impression means; the hinged or jack-knife action of the cover ofiering frictionless and less constrained action inthe duplicating operation.
A further object is to provide a portable duplicator which will carry a copying roll of con-' siderable length, resulting in extended service and which, through simple winding and stretching means, can be made taut over the bed plate, facilitating the speedy and cleanerremovalof the copies.
yet further object is to provide a device as described, having means spacing the roller from the duplicating band, when the cover assumes a spread position to locate the platen at the feeding end of the machine, providing the necessary clearance for the passage of the paper from the guide onto the margin bar.
Another object is to provide novel winding and stretching mechanism which, through the ma nipulation of a single knob, will release the spindles at both ends of the machine, allowing free movement of the band in either direction.
A still further object is to provide a portable copying machine as described, with novel means for automatically lifting the impression roller off of impression on the return stroke, while permitting the usual impression during the forward stroke. i
Another object is to provide a portable copying machine with an automatic paper guide which may form part of the complete unit or constitute an attachment necessitating very little change tures of construction and operation, as will be more fully described and particularly pointedv out in the specification, drawings and claims appended hereto.

Referring to Figures 1 and 2, the machineis shown as consisting of a case or box-like frame formed of side members 10 and '11, an, end-member 12 provided with a handle 13 and spring clip 14, a removable end rnernber 15 provided with a retaining clip 16, and a basal? carrying supporting feet 18 and secured to the end and side members by screws 19. The removable end member 15- is held in place by the retaining clip 16 when the same is positioned as shown in dotted lines in Figure 7, but by means of the securing nut 20 the clip can ice-turned to permit removal of the member so that access can be had to the interior of the frame. For maintaining the frame in position during the duplicatingoperation, the supporting feet 18, preferably formed of rubber, are provided with a dished or concaved surface 21 so that'the feet will form a suction upon any smooth surface.
' The. frame provides a bed plate 22 extending transverselyof the frame, connecting the side members 10 and 11 and terminating short .of the respective end members 12 and 15. The bed plate forms a support for a duplicating .bend 23 and is provided with longitudinally extending tracks 24positioned adjacent the side members and-defining the width of the impression roller. Atthe respective ends of the bed plate are positioned spindles 25 journaled in the side members 10 and 11 and being provided with knurled wheels 26 0:; means of which the operator can impart rotation to the same to wind or unwind the du-' plicating band 23 wound on the spindles, respectively. In order to secure a tightening of the'duplicating band on the bed plate .22, the
spindles at one end are provided with ratchet wheels 2'? engaged by the pawls 28 supported for movement in a U-shaped support 29 secured in one of the side members by the nut 30 and being resiliently urged'in a downward direction by means of the spring 31. The inwardly directed ends of the respective pawls 28 are secured to the disk 32 non-rotatably mounted on shaft .33, journaled in a side frame'and being provided with an operating knob 34. The operatingknob is accessible to the operator, and'by rotation in either direction the pawls can .be' withdrawn to release their engagement with the ratchet wheels 27 and thus permit rotation of the spindles. After a fresh portion of the duplicating band 23 has been positioned on the bed plate, the knob 34 is released and, with the pawls in engagement with the ratchet wheels, rotation of the spindle is prevented in a certain direction, However, each spindle can be rotated in the opposite direction to. cause a tightening of the band on the bed plate. I
' The cover for the frame, and which also-carries the impression means, is formed of two sections 36 and 37, respectively; the pivoted section 36,
having depending flanges 38 by means of which the section is pivoted to the frame, the'screws 39 (Figure 7) passing through openings in the flanges and being threaded to portions 40 integral with the frame. The reciprocating section 37 is likewise provided with depending flanges 4'1 and has a hinged connection as at 42 with'the section 36 and at its other end carries-the impression roller 43 journaled in depending lugs 44. At pointsspaced above the journaling of the impression roller in the, depending lugs 44, are provided handles 45 secured to the flanges 41 of the removable section by bolts 46. In reciprocating the impression roller over the gelatin surface, the handles providegrasping means for the operator and facilitate the duplicating operation.
The section 37 of the cover preferably carries the blank sheets of paper to be duplicated, and it is therefore provided with the paper supporting tray, suitably secured to the section and formed of a base 47 and integral spaced strips 48. As clearly-shown in Figure l, the section has a portion cut therefrom and bent downwardly to form a dependingfiange or paper guide 50, which is slightly dished as'at 52 at its center and provided with spaced horizontal extending slots 53 for receiving the paper guides 54. Thepaper guides are flattened on oneside to form guiding edges for the paper and are held in adjusted position in the slots by means of the nuts 55. To complete the hopper through which the sheets of paper are fed to the impression roller, a guard 56 is suitably secured to the lower end of the section 3'"? and forms a shield to prevent the sheets from coming in contact with the impression roller.
In reciprocating the impression roller 43 over the bed plate, the sections 36 and 37 have a jackknife action with the section 36 pivoting on the frame, while the reciprocating section 3'? has a pivotal relation at 42 with section 36. To limit the spread operative position of the cover, links 57 are pivotally secured at 58 to the flanges 41 of the re cip'rocating section and, by means of the inclined slot 60 and a pin 61, are operatively connected to section 36. Atthe projecting end each link is provided with an offset slot 62 which forms a shoulder so that the spread position of the sections is limited unless, by actuation of the link, the pin is caused to enter the offset slot, whereupon the cover can be completely elongated to form a closure means for the frame, as shown in Figure 2.
With the cover in position as shown in Figure 4, it is seen that the impression roller is located on the supporting blocks 63, pivoted at 64 to the respective side frames 10-and 11. The blocks have suitably secured thereto a margin bar 65 having a central cut out portion 66 to'perrnit access to thejmarginal edge of the paper abutting? is located in the opening provided in the forward 1 part of the frame, which also functions to receive the impression roller 43 when the cover forms a closure'for the frame; The links 57 permit a" spread position of the cover to that extent to 10- cate the impression roller 43 on the supporting blocks 63 which'locates the margin bar 65 in alignment with the paper guide 50. A sheet of-paper from the guide will thus engage the margin bar, the position of which determines the extent of margin on the forward edge of the sheet.
I For accommodating strips of a duplicating material, a modified form of machine is shown in Figures 8 and 9, including the usual form of frame comprising side members 10, 11, an end member 12 and a removable end member 68 provided with a handle 69. The frame,in this modification, constructed to receive 'a container 70 in which is stored a number of extra gelatin strips 71, the strips being removable to the end adapted to be closed by member 68. At one end of the bed plate 22 is positioned a transverse shaft 72, having projecting from its upper surface a plurality of spaced prongs 73 by means of which the end of the gelatin strip is detachably secured to the shaft 72, non-rotatably positioned in the side frames. At the other end of the bed plate a rotatable shaft '74 is located, also of square cross section, having secured thereto a plurality of spaced prongs 73 for securing the other end of the strip. As this latter shaft is rotatable, means are provided for maintaining the same in adjusted position so that the gelatin strip can be held taut on the bed plate, including a ratchet wheel '75 mounted for engagement with a pawl 76 pivotally secured to arm 77 non-rotatably mounted on shaft 78. The pawl is supported for movement by the member 79 and is held in engagement with the ratchet wheel by the coil spring 80. Knob 81,,
secured to the projecting extremity of shaft 78 (Figure 9), permits actuation of arm '77 to withdraw the pawl, releasing engagement of the same with the ratchet wheel and permitting rotation of the shaft '24, which is accomplished by the knurled wheels 82 secured to the respective ends of the same. By the above construction, the strips '71 of gelatinized material can be readily positioned on the bed plate and held in stretched condition to permit easy removal of the duplicated copies by the ratchet and pawl. To remove a duplicat-- ing strip, the knob 81 is rotated to withdraw the pawl, releasing its engagement with the ratchet, whereupon the shaft 74 can be rotated and the ends of the strip unlatched from the hooks 73.
In Figure 1G a slightly modified form of the above construction is disclosed, in which the shaft 7% and ratchet are removed and replaced by a plurality of disks 83 positioned adjacent the respective side frames and connected by bar 84. The disks, in turn, are secured to shaft 85 journaled in the side frames, the projecting end of one having suitably secured thereto an operatknob similar to 81. One end of the strip of duplicating material is suitably secured to anonrotatable shaft, such as 72, secured to the side frames; while the other end is removably fastened to the bar 84 by studs 85. By rotation of shaft through actuation of the operating knob, the bar 84- can be positioned as shown in Figure 10, when the strip of gelatin material will be under maximum tension. A suitable stop is provided to hold the parts in this position, permitting, however, rotation of the disk 83 in a clockwise direction so as to release the tension on the strip to permit removal of the same.
The present invention contemplatesv automatic feeding mechanism which will function to forcibly eject a sheet of paper toward the margin bar as the cover is located in its maximum operative spread position as shown in Figure 13. The paper supporting tray with which the feeding mechanism is associated, consists of a paper guide supported by and extending between the depending flanges 41 of the reciprocating section 37 of the cover. Positioned against a depending flange on the paper guide is the base portion 91 of spaced strips 92, each strip being provided on its outer side only with an upstanding flange 93 and accommodating at its upper end.

Each strip 92 is provided with a resilient member 95 which serves to maintain the sheets supported by the strips in position so that the feeding fingers, to presently described, will at all times engage the top sheet. Each strip is also provided with a bent-over flange or lipportion 96 which serves to maintain the forward edge of the sheetswith in the tray and allowing separation of the top sheet from the remaining sheets by the feeding mechanism.

Jour naled in the supports 97 above the paper sup porting tray is a shaft 100 onwhich are nonrotatably mounted elongatedv feeding-fingers lol and having operative connection with section- 36 of the cover through means of the bearing 163, which is rotatablyrnounted on the section and has loose connection with the rod, permitting reciprocating movements of the same.
In operation of the machine to, duplicate a sheet fed to the hopper formed by the paper guide 90 and the impression roller guard 56, the
impression roller is given a rearward movement 7 toward the right to impress the sheet upon the surface of the gelatin band 23. The forward movement is not initiated until the sheet of paper abuts the margin bar 65 which serves to properly position the forward edge with relation to the gelatin surface, thus determining the margin on the sheet. Actuation of the impression roller in a direction toward the right will cause the respective sections of the cover to approach each other, with the result that the operating rod 166 has movement with respect to the bearing 108 during the reciprocation. Bearing 108 will like wise move toward the right, but since the movement of the left-hand stop 107 is greater in magnitude than that of bearing 108, engagementof the parts will take place when the impression roller has reached its extreme right-hand position on the duplicating surface; This engage ment of the left-hand stop 10? with bearing 108 causes movement of the operatingrods 106 in a direction toward the left, since itwill be understood that after engagementtakes place continued movement, although to a very slight extent, is imparted to the impressionroller; whereupon it completes its rearward printing stroke. Rotation of the gear segments 10% will cause a counter-clockwise rotation to be imparted to shaft 100, andthe rotation given to the feeding fingers 101 will cause thumbingof the topmost sheet of paper supported bythe paper tray, disengaging its forward edge fromthe lip 96. The paper is thus held in kinked or separated position with its rear edge in engagement with stop 9 1, while its mid-portion is held by the feeding fingers 101, as shown inFigure 15.
The parts-will remain in the position above movement in a forward direction of the impression roller to locate the same upon the supporting blocks 63, is sufficient to impart the necessary reciprocation tothe operating rods 106 to rotate 5 the hopper and into engagement with the margin bar 65. This downward movement of the fed sheet of paper is accentuated by the kinked portion of thepaper described. It is thus seen that operation of the impression roller in its rearward direction to impress the fedsheet on the duplicating surface, will actuate the feeding mechanism, causing the feeding fingers to separate a sheet from the paper tray; and'at-the completion of the return or forward movement of the impression roller, the separated sheet is forcibly ejected from the paper tray and caused to be fed so that engagement of its marginal edge with the margin bar is assured. 1
In Figures 11 and 12 there is disclosed a construction for application to duplicating machines 'of the type described, whereby the impression roller is automatically lifted off of impression during the return or forward stroke of the, cover.

it is customary for the operator to strip the duplicated sheet from the surface of the gelatin band prior to returning the cover for initiating another printing operation. When this procedure is carried out, the impression roller has direct contact with the surface of the gelatin band which will result in smearing one side of the sheet on those copies subsequently duplicated as the roller impresses them on the gelatin surface.
To obviate the above objectionable feature, the
present invention contemplates the provision of means, including a yoke, consisting of a journal portion rotatably mounted on the stud shaft 111 fixed to the depending lug 112 integral with the side flange 41 on the section 37, a bearing portion 113 mounting the roller 114, and a handle portion 115 formed integral with the remaining parts and provided with a handle 116. A spring 117 is mounted on the journal portion 110 and has one end fixedly secured to the depending lug,
while its other end engages a portion of the yoke to maintain the yoke in a definite position. In this construction, the impression roller 43 is journaled, as usual, at one end in the side flange of the cover, but has its other end mounted in the support 118 provided on the s'ection for the purpose. In operation, to reciprocate the impression roller over the duplicating surface and frame, the operate" grasps handle 116 and, by imparting rearward movement to the roller, automatically rotion of the yoke is sumcient to raise roller 114 above the lowermost level of the impression roller so that the latter is permitted to impress the sheet of paper on the duplicating surface; Should the operator strip the duplicator sheet from the band by hand as described, it will be seen that during the return movement of the impression roller,
contact between the same and the duplicating: band is prevented. In order to impart forward "movement, or movement toward the left in Figure 11, to the impression'roller, it is necessary for the operator to automatically rock the yoke on the stud shaft 111 in a counterclockwise direction, thus locating the roller 114m its extreme lower position. In assuming this position, the roller 114 engages the track 24 formed on the frame and thus functions to lift the impression roller from The yoke is held in the position described during the entire forward movement of the impression roller; and" This rota- From the above, it will be seen that the present invention, among other features, contemplates the provision of a compact and portable duplieating unit in which the frame carries the fiat duplicating surface and has a cover of articulated sections jointly pivoted at one end and, with interlinking members, performs the dual function of actuating membersfor moving an impression roller over the duplicating surface and as a closure means for the frame. The fixed and permanent relation between the paper guide, impression roller and actuating members makes for less inconvenience and trouble andbetter work by inexperienced hands; and by the absence of any sliding action between the parts, little lubrication is required, with all the parts practically operating in a frictionless manner. The hinged cover with substantial jointed construction between the sections, together with the slotted link and pin con,- struction, provides aligning features for the impression roller which offer a greater freedom and more frictionless operation, with the additional advantage whereby the impression roller is received in the frame when the cover is closed, making it possible to present a compact appearance resulting in a readily handled article.
It is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the exact embodiment of the device shown, as various and other forms of the device will be apparent to those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit of the invention or scope of the claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A duplicating machine, comprising, in combination, a base providing a flat duplicating surface, and a hinged cover pivoted to the base and carrying impression means at its free end.
2. A duplicating machine, comprising, in combination, a base providing a fiat duplicating surface, and a two-part hinged cover pivoted to the base at one end and carrying impression means at its other end.
3. A duplicating machine including, in combination, a base providinga flat duplicating surface, and a cover having a hinged connection intermediate its ends, one end being pivoted to the base mits movement of the impression means over the duplicating surface, the cover also forming closure means for the base. g

9. A duplicating machine including, in combination, a base formed of a box-like frame pro viding a bed plate, spindles journaled in said frame, a duplicating band having a portion supported by the bed plate and its ends wound on the spindles, means for maintaining the portion on the plate taut, a cover for the frame formed of hinged sections, one section being pivoted to the frame, the other section having journaled therein a roller, and a paper guide formed in said last-mentioned section, whereby said cover is adapted to be actuated to reciprocate the impression roller over the bed plate.

A duplicating machine including, in com bination, a base formed of a box-like frame providing a bed plate, a duplicating surface provided by the bed plate, and a cover for the frame formed of hinged sections, one of which is pivoted to the frame, the other carrying an impression roller, whereby said cover is operative to reciprocate the impression roller over the duplicating surface, said cover also forming closure means for the frame, the frame providing a receptacle for the roller when the cover is in closed position.
11. A duplicating machine, in combination, a box-like frame having a removable end member, a bed plate provided by said frame, a duplicating surface for the plate positionedby access through the end closed by said removable member, and a cover for the frame, said cover carrying impression means.

A duplicating machine including, in combination, abase formed of a box-like frame, a'bed plate provided by said frame, a duplicating surface supported by said plate, a cover formed of hinged sections, one of which ispivoted to the frame, the other having journaled therein an impression roller for reciprocation over the duplicating surface, and means operatively associated with the roller for automatically raising said roller off of the duplicating surface in one direction of reciprocation.

A duplicating machine including, in combination, a base formed of a box-like frame, a bed plate provided by said frame, a duplicating surface supported by said plate, a cover formed of hinged sections, one of which is pivoted to the frame, the other having journaled therein an impression roller for reciprocation over the duplicating surface, and means journaled in said lastmentioned section and adapted to beactuated by the operator during reciprocation ofthe impression roller, said means operating to automatical- 1y raise the roller off of impression during one direction of reciprocation.

In a duplicating machine, a frame providing a flat duplicating surface, a roller forming impression means adapted to reciprocate over the surface, means carrying a paper guide journaling said roller, said means also journaling a yoke member, a second roller carried by said yoke, and a handle secured to the yoke, whereby said second roller is depressed when the handle is rocked to cause return movement of the impression means.

In a duplicating machine, in combination, a frwne providing a flat'duplicating surface, a cover for the frame formed of hinged sections, one of which'is pivoted to the frame, the other carrying impression roller, a paper tray also carried by said last-mentioned section, and paper feeding means rotatably mounted in said tray, said means including a shaft having feeding fingers thereon, and an operating rod for rotating said shaft. ,7

In a dupicating machine, in combination, a frame providing a flat duplicating surface, a cover for the frame formed of hinged sections, one of which is pivoted tothe frame, the other being reciprocable and carrying an impression roller, a paper tray secured to the reciprocable section, and paper feeding means journaled in said tray, said means including ,a shaft 'car rying feeding fingers and an operating rod for rotating said shaft having stops-thereon and being supported on the pivoted section of the cover.
17. In a duplicating machine, a frame providing a fiat duplicating surface, a cover for the frame formed of hinged sectionsone of which is pivoted to the frame, the other being reciprocable and carrying an impression roller, a paper carrying tray mounted on saidreciprocable section, and paper feeding means for feeding the top sheet to the impression means at the completion of 'a printing stroke.

In a duplicating machine, a frame providing a flat duplicating surface, a cover for'the frame formed of hinged sections, one of which is pivoted to the frame, the other being reciprocable and carrying an impression roller, a paper carrying tray mounted on said reciprocable section, and paper feeding means for feeding the-top sheet to the impression means including rotatable feeding fingers, an operating rod to rotate said fingers, and stops on said rod for engaging the bearing supporting the rod on the pivoted sectioirwhereby said rod is actuated by the movement of the sections of the cover.

Av duplicating machine, in combination, a frame providing a fiat duplicating surface, a cover therefor having hinged sections and being pivoted to the frame, an impression roller carried by said cover and adapted to be reciprocated over the duplicating surface, a paper tray secured to one hinged section of the cover, and paper feeding means operated by the movement of one section of the cover with respect to the other section.

A duplicating machine, in combination, a frame providing a fiat duplicating surface, a cover therefor having hinged sections and being pivoted to the frame, an impression roller carried by said cover and adapted to be reciprocated overthe duplicating surface, a paper tray secured to one hinged section of the cover, and'paper feeding means including rotatable fingers and an operating rod, said rod being reciprocated by the movement of one. section of the cover with respect to the other section.
.23. A duplicating machine embodying a plurality of hinged sections carrying an impression roller, and paper feeding means adapted to feed a sheet of paper to the roller, including thumb- 24.. A duplicating 'machine embodying a plurality of hinged sections, a frame to which one section is pivoted, an impression roller carried by another of said sections, whereby said roller is reciprocable over the frame, and paper feeding means actuatedby the hinged action of the sections during reciprocation of the roller to feed a sheet of paper to'the roller at the completion of a printing operation.

A duplicating. machine embodying a plurality of hinged sections, a frame to which one section is pivoted, an impression roller carried by another. of said sections, whereby said roller is reciprocable over the frame to complete a duplicating. operation, and a depending flange provided on the second-mentioned section forming I a paper guide to direct sheets of paper to the roller.

In a duplicating machine, a box-like frame, amember carried by said frame and provided with a duplicating surface, a closure member for said box-like frame and movable with respect. thereto, and an impression roller, said impression roller having its axis of rotation fixed with respect to the closure member and being adapted to be moved over the duplicating surface by movement of said closure member.

In a duplicatingmachine, a box-like frame, a member carried by this frame. and provided with a duplicating surface, a closure member for saidbox-like member, and an impression roller rotatably journaled adjacent a portion of the closure member, the axis of rotation of said roller being fixed with respect to said portion of said closure member, said closure member being movable with respect to said frame to draw said impression roller over said duplicating surface.

In a duplicating machine, a box-like frame, a 'member carried by said frame and provided with aduplicating surface, a closure member for said box-like frame and movable with respect thereto, an impression roller carried by said clo sure member and movable therewith to press a sheet of paper against said duplicating surface, and means responsive to movement of said closure'member for feeding sheets of paper to said impression roller.

A duplicating machine, a box-like frame, a member carried by said frame and provided with a'duplicating surface, a closure member for said box-like frame and movable with respect thereto, an impression roller, said impression roller having its axis of rotation fixed with respect to the closure member and being adapted to be moved over the duplicating surface by movement of said closure member, and means carried 119 by said closure member and responsive. to the movement thereof for feeding paper to said impression roller.

a member carried by said frame and provided 1 5 with a duplicating surface, a closure member for said box-like member, an impression roller ro-' tatably journalled adjacent a portion ofv the closure member, the axis of rotation of said roller being fixed with respect to said portion of said 2 closure member, said closure member being movable with respect to said frame to draw said. impression roller over said duplicating surface, and means carried bysaid closure member and. responsive to the movement thereof to feed paper to said impression roller.

In a duplicating machine, a box-like frame, a member carried by said frame and provided with a duplicating surface, a closure member for said box-like frame. and movable with respect g thereto, an impression roller carried by said 010- sure member and movable therewith in one direction to press a. sheet of paper against said duplicatingsur'face, and means for displacing said impression-roller away from said duplicating surface when the closure member is moved in the other direction.

In a duplicating machine, a box-like frame, a member carried by said frame and provided with a duplicating surface, a closure member for said box-like frame and movable with respect thereto,- an impression roller, said impression roller having its axis of rotation. fixed with respect to the closure member and being adapted to'be reciprocated over the duplicating surface by movement of saidv closure member, and means for displacing. said impr-essionroller away from said duplicating surface during alternate strokes thereof.

a member carried by said frame and provided with a duplicating surface, a closure member for said box-like member, an impression roller rotatably journaled adjacent a portion of the closure member, the axis of rotation of said roller being fixed with respect to said portion of said closure member, said closure member being reciprocable with res ect to said frame to draw said impression roller over said duplicating surface, and means for displacing said impression roller away from said duplicating surface during movement of said closure member in one direction.

In a duplicating machine, a frame, a platen carried by the frame and provided with a duplicatin surface, a cover-member having one end pivoted to the frame, a second member pivoted to the free end of the first mentioned member, and an impression roller carried by said second member and movable therewith over said duplicating surface, the axis of rotation of said imression roll r being fixed with respect to said second member.

In a duplicating machine, a frame, a platen carried by the frame and provided with a duplieating surface, a member having one end pivoted to the frame, a second member pivoted to the free end of the first mentioned member, an impression roller carried by said second member and movable therewith over said duplicating surface, the axis of rotation of said impression roller being fixed with respect to said second member, and means responsive to the movement of said second member for feeding sheets of paper to said impression roller.

In a duplicating machine, a frame, a platen carried by the frame and provided with a duplicating surface, a cover-member having one end pivoted to the frame, a second member pivoted to the free end of the first mentioned member, an impression roller carried by said second member and movable therewith over said duplicating surface, the axis of rotation of said impression roller being fixed with respect to said second member, and means for displacing said impression roller in a direction away from said platen when said impression roller travels in one direction.
40. In a duplicating machine, a frame, a platen member carried by the frame and provided with a duplicating surface, foldable cover-means connected to the frame adjacent one end of said platen, and an impression roller carried by said foldable means and movable thereby over the duplicating surface.

In a duplicating machine, a frame, a platen member carried by the frame and provided-with a duplicating surface, foldable means connected to the frame adjacent one end of said platen, an impression roller carried by said foldable means and movable thereby over said duplicating surface, and means responsive to movement of said foldable means to feed sheets of paper to said impression roller.
42. A duplicating machine comprising a frame, a flat platen in said frame for holding a duplicating master, a member pivoted adjacent one end of said platen, the pivotal axis of said member extending transversely of said platen, a second member pivoted to the free end of the first-mentioned member, an impression roller rotatably carried by said second member and movable longitudinally of said platen, and means mounted on said second member for guiding sheets of paper to said roller.
