An'object of the invention isto provide a lock of the character described specially designed for use on window sashes and other sliding closures for securing the same either in partially 'open or in closed position.
The lock is specially adapted for use asafside lock on a vertically slidable window sash whereby the sash may be locked closed or maintained in selected open positions.
Another object is to provide a lock of the character described arranged to be maintained in active position by gravity and to be released manually and includes, also, means for' securing said lock in either active or released position.
Another object is tov provide a locking device of the character described which, while specially designed as a window sash'lock, is also capable of general use.
With the above and other -objects in View the invention has particular relation to certain novel features of construction," operation and arranges ment of parts an example of which is given in this specificationandl illustrated in the accompanying drawing wherein:

Referring now more particularly to the drawing, wherein like numerals of reference designate similar parts in each of the figures, the numeral l1 designates a casing, preferably rectangular in form, which may be counter-sunk into a sash 5 Claims. (Cl. 292-189) or other closure as 2 and which has the overturned end wings 3, 3. A cover plate 4 may be fitted over said casing and said cover plate and casing secured to the sash by means of suitable screwsk `5, 5 which are fitted through the cover 68 plate and through the wings 3 and are screwed into the sash.
Slidably mounted in the casing 1 there is a. weight 6, preferably rectangular in form and the lower end of thisweight'has the diagonal slot 65 7 out therein. .Across the lower end of the cas# ing there is a bolt 8 which is slidably mounted and whose free end is adapted to be projected through the sideopening 9 of the casing 1. The bolt 8'has a tenon 10 secured theretoand pref- 610 erably formed integrally therewith and which has asliding fit in the diagonal slot 7. yWhen the'weight 6 is moved upwardly in the casing, the coaction of one 'side yof the slot 7 with the corresponding side of tenon 10 will cause Ythe 75 bolt 8 to be retracted and when the weightV 6y is lowered, the coaction of the other side of the slot 'Zwth the tenon 10 will cause the bolt 8 to be projected into active' position. Said bolt 8, it is to be noted, has a shoulder l1 engageable against 80V the side of the casing 1 to limit the outward movement of the bolt.
The cover plate 4 has a vertical slot 12 and there is a thumb screw 13 whose shank projects through said slot and has a threaded connection 8'5v with the weight 6. The weight may be elevated by said thumb screw and lowered by gravity and the bolt 8 may be locked in active or retracted position by screwing said thumb screw inwardly until the friction face 14 thereof is brought into 9bV secure frictional engagement with the cover plate 4.
When this lock is used on a slidable closure such as a window, a keeper plate such as 15 may r be secured to the adjacent facing. This keeper 95 plate may be provided with the suitable spaced openings 16 into which the bolt 8 may be projected to lock the sash or other closure in the desired position, that is, closed or partly, or entirely open. 1'0'0 In the form shown in Figure 7 the numeral 17 designates a casing having the end wings 18, 18. This casing may be countersunk into the sash or other closure and its cover plate 19 fitted thereover and secured in place by means of screws 1F05 which pass through the openings 20, 2l and are screwed into the sash underneath as explained in connection with Figure 6. In the casing 17 there is a weight 22 preferably rectangular in form which may have an oblong slot 23 therein. 1'10 lock the weight 22 has the upwardly converging diagonal slots 24, 24, and beneath the weight there are the oppositely arranged transversely movable bolts 25, 25, whichhave the respective tenons 26, 26 preferably formed integrally therewith which work in said slots 2 4, 2fl. The lower margin of the casing 17 has a centrally located transverse slot 27 and opposite this slot the weight 22 has a deep transverse slot 28. The inner ends of the bolts 25 are upwardly beveled as at 29, 29,
This type of lock, illustrated in Figure 7, may ordinarily be attached to the lower margin o'f the window sash and upstanding from the casing beneath there is a keeper 30.` This' keeper has a shank 31 which is threaded into anutlz, seated in the casing 33 beneath. Counter sunk into the upper face ci the casing 33 there is a keeper plate 34 which has a transverse slot 35 to receive the keeper 3Q asshown in lFigure 12 and thekeeper plate'is attached to saidI Casing 3:3 Aby means of screws 36 aridrests against the upper end of the nut 32 whereby the keeper 30 is secured in place. The keeper is so located that when the windowsashjis closed said keeper will pass through the slot 2 7'and will Torce the bolt 25 apart and will enter. the slot 28 and when in said last mentionedposition the inner ends ofthe bolts 25 will align with the'keeper opening'S'I and lthe weight 22 Will'by gravity act to,1 or'c'e saidbolts 25 into the opening 327 of lthe keeper whereby the sash, or othcrvclosurewll be locked in closed position. When itis desired toreleasefthe lock, the weight 23 mayl be manually elevated Vyand this willr operate,
through the' tenons 26, to release. the ybolts 25., the: keeper.l 30A whereupon the. window may be opened.
The drawing and description disclose what are now considered to be preferred ftorms of the` invention by, way of illustration only' while thev broad principle of the invention will be dened by the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. A lock comprising a casing, a weight therein having an oblique mortise forming a bearing, a laterally movable lock bolt in the casing lying in a common plane with the weight and having a tenon which conforms `in shape to and ts in Seid bearing! and means assible. outside 0f the @estes terriens 'seid weitet whereby ,Said boli may be withdrawn into inactive position.
2. A lock comprising a casing, a flat, platedlike weight therein having an oblique mortise forming a bearing, a laterally movable lock bolt in the casing aligned with the weight and having a tenori which works in said bearing, means for moving said weight to actuate said bolt and means for securingsad weightin xed position.
3. A lock comprising a casing, a weight therein having oblique bearings, oppositely arranged lock bolts in said casing, tenons on said bolts which work in said bearings, said casing having a keeperreceiving slot between said bolts.
4. A lock comprising a. casing having a keeperreceiving slot, a weight inthe casing having oblique bearings, oppositely arranged lock bolts in the casing lyingl in a common .plane with the weight., one on each side of said slot,itenons on said bolts which t closely in said bearings, said tenons and bearings forming means whereby the bolts may be projected into active position into said slot or; into retracted position in accordance with the movement of weight. i K i 5. A lock comprising a casing. a. flat relatively thin weight slidably mounted` in the casing and having an oblique mor-tis@ provided with parallel bearing faced a lock bolt mounted to slide transversely relative to the weight andzhaving a tenon whichts closely in said mortise and has parallel bearing, faces arranged to work against the bearing iac'e's of the mortise.,A said lock' bolt and tenori lying in a common plane with the weight.
