My present invention relates to` a tie wire tightening and twisting device and consists particularly of improvements over my former patent for tie wire tightening and twisting device issued March l0, 1931, Patent No. 1,795,625.
The objects of this invention are:
First, to provide a means whereby the tie wire of forms or structures may be drawn tightly and at the same time be twisted, bent, or formed to nt jaws for gripping and twisting the tie wire;
Second, to provide means of this class in combination with or forming a part of the twisting device;
Third, to provide a pair of adjustable jaws for gripping the end portions of tie wires of various gages or sizes so that the same tool may be used with only slight adjustment;
Fourth, to provide novelly constructed jaws for accommodating the device to various sizes of 29 wires without otherwise adjusting the device or changing its function or manipulation;
Fifth, to provide a device of this class in which one jaw is adapted to enter another jaw and adapted to enter the latter jaw in only one position, said position between the two jaws depending upon the size of wire used;
Sixth, to provide a device of this class in which the tie wires used can be clamped only on one side or in one position of the jaws;
Seventh, to provide novelly constructed means for forcing the two jaws together anda novel relation of said means to the other portions of the structure; and v Eighth, to provide as a whole a novelly constructed device of this class and one which is simple and economical of construction proportional to its functions, durable, efficient, easy to operate and which will not readily deteriorate or get out of order.
440 With these and other objects in View as will appear hereinafter, my invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts and portions as will be hereinafter described in detail and particularly set forth in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and tothe characters of reference thereon which form a part of this application, in which:

The tool is supported in a long tubular handle l about which the tool is gripped with one hand.
At one end of the handle is secured the pivot Y member 2. This pivot member consists primarily of 'a pointed portion 2a at its extended end, a claw 2b intermediate its ends and at its outer side, and a forming portion 2c at one side and forming a portion of the claw portion. The extended por- (5 tion of the pivot member is offset and positioned parallel to the axis of the handle. The pointed portion 2a, is adapted to be positioned against and to enter a portion of the form structure F, shown best in Fig. 1, and is prevented from enter- 30 ing such form structure an excessive distance by the discZd positioned inwardly from the outer end of the pointed portion. The claw2b` is similar to that in common use and is preferably made by a notch in the outer flange of the l-shaped pivot member. The forming portion 2c is preferably disc like with a backwardly extended edge portion 2e. 1n the handle l is rotatably mounted a tube 3 which extends beyond the opposite ends of the handle l and is provided at one end with a jaw or jaw member 4 and at its opposite end with 'an enlarged portion 5. The jaw 4 is preferably 105 screwably secured to the tube 3. In and coaxially with the tube 3 is longitudinally shiftably mounted a rod 6 which is preferably round as shown. At one end of this rod is screwably mounted the jaw or jaw member '7 which forms with the jaw 110 or jaw member 4 the clamping means for the tie wire. At the opposite end of the rod 6 is pivotally mounted the handle 8 by means of a pin 9 as will be described hereafter.
The longitudinally outer side, or the portion of the jaw or jaw member 4, which is extended towards the jaw member 7, is provided with a pair of jaws, as indicated by 4a, in Fig. 2, which fcrm with the plane passing through the axis of the rod 6 substantially dihedral angles, so that both jaws or" the member 4 engage or clamp the wire. The jaw member 7 is preferably round with its axis at right angies to the axis of the rod and is mounted on the threaded portion 6a of the rod. The jaw member 7 is secured to the threaded portion of the rod by a set screw l0. The pitch of the threads on the threaded portion 6a is substantially such that the pitch is equal to the difference in diameter of the wire of adjacent gages so that when the jaw member 7 is rotated a complete revolution` the tool will accommodate and clamp the wire of the next larger or smaller size.
It will be here noted that if the ends of the tie wire become overlapped or lie one over the other, the jaw members 4 and 7 will be required to be positioned at least twice the thickness of the diameter of the wire used. kSuch overlapping or crossing of the tie wire will be at the inner side of the jaw member' 7. In order to accommodate such overlapping or crossing there is provided a clearance 4Z) at the inner portions of the jaws 4a. Such clearance will permit such crossing of the wires and still clamp the same between the two jaw members.
It will also be noted that ir the jaws do not tightly grip the wir-e when the handle 8 is shifted from the solid to the dotted line position as will be described hereafter, the jaw member '7 is adjusted with respect to the jaw member 4 one-half the distance of the pitch of thethread on the rod 6. In order to accomplish the latter adjustment, the jaw member 7 is removed and the rod 6 is withdrawn and rotated one-half revolution with respect to the tube 3. The jaw member '7 is then again screwed into position and tightened.
The jaws 4a are positioned at the opposite sides of a recess, forming a recessed jaw, the opposite ends of which are enclosed by walls 4c and 4d. The portion of the jaw member 7 through which the set screw 10 extends, and the corresponding recess portion of the jaw member 4 are preferably longer than the diametrically opposite portions of the jaw members 7 and 4 respectively so that the jaw member 7 can enter the recessed jaw in only one position.
The wall 4d, which is positioned further from the axis of the rod 6 than the wall 4c is partially cut away, as shown in Fig. 4, so that the tie wires may be inserted only between the long portions or jaws of the jaw members.
The enlarged portion 5 is provided with longitudinal grooves 5a into which the ends of the pin 9 extend and which permit longitudinal shift- A ing of the pin with the rod 6. These longitudinal grooves hold the two jaw members nonrotatably with respect to each other but permit longitudinal shifting of the one with respect to the other.
The handle 8 is provided with a bifurcated portion 8a which straddles a reduced portion 6b of the rod 6 and is pivotally connected thereto bythe pin 9. The peripheries o f the furcations of the bifurcated portion 8d are preferably spirally shaped, as shown,v so as to form a cam for gradually forcing the jaws relative to each other said lever means and the other jaw having a circular concave portion.
and clamping the tie wire therebetween, the unclamped and clamping positions being shown respectively by solid and dotted lines in Fig. 3. Between the bifurcated portion 8a and the inner end of the enlarged portion 5, that is, the inner end of the slotted portion of the member 5 into which the birurcated portion extends, is preferably positioned a pair of axially spaced apart rollers 11 against which the peripheral curved portionsof the bifurcated portion bear, to facilitate the drawing or forcing the jaws toward and from each other. The axes of these rollers preferably intersect at right angles the axis of the rods. These rollers are held in position by a set screw 12. If desired, several pairs of rollers may be used.
Though I have shown and described a particular construction, combination and arrangement of parts and portions, I do not wish to be limited to this particular construction, combination and arrangement, but desire to include in the scope of my invention the construction, combination and arrangement substantially as set forth in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a tie-wire tightening and twisting device, a wire tightening device, one end of the device having means u "n which said device may be pivoted and having means at the eide thereof for gripping they tieewire and other means at the side 'iereof to facilitate the bending of the end portion of the tie-wire.
2. In a tie-wire tightening and twisting de- Vice, a wire tightening device, one end of the device having means upon which said device may be pivoted and having means at the side thereof for gripping the tie-wire and having a jaw inwardly from the aforementioned means and '15 forming a part thereof for facilitating the bending of the end portion of the tie-wire.
3. In a tie-wire tightening and twisting device,
a wire tightening device, one end of the device having means upon whch said device may be piv- @zo oted and having at the side thereof a claw for clamping the end portion of the tie-wire, one side of the claw over which the end portion of said tie-wire extends being shaped to facilitate the bending or the end portion of the tie-wire.
4. III atie-.wire tightening and twisting device a pair of jaws for gripping the end portions 0f the tie wire, and a pivot member offset with respect to said jaws and adapted to pivotally support said jaws, said pivot member having means in connection therewith to facilitate the bending of the end portions of said tie wire in conformity to one of said jaws.

9. In a tie-wire tightening and twisting device of the class described, a long handle, a tube rotatably mounted within said handle, a jaw secured to one end of said tube beyond one end of said handle and having a circular shaped concave surface, a rod longitudinally shiftably mounted within said tube, a second jaw longitudinally adjustably mounted at one end of said rod in spaced relation to the rst jaw and having a cylindrical shaped convex surface, and means at the opposite end of said handle for shifting said jaws with respect to each other.

In a tie-wire tightening and twisting device` of the class described, a handle, a jaw mounted on said handle and provided at its outer side with a circular surfaced recess-like jaw, a second jaw with a circular convex surface shiftably mounted with respect to the first jaw and adapted to enter the latter.

In a tie-wire tightening and twisting device of the class described, a handle, a circular surfaced recess-like jaw mounted upon said handle, a rod longitudinally shiftably mounted through said jaw, a second jaw* with a circular convex surface adjustably mounted upon said rod and adapted to enter said recess-like jaw, and means for adjusting said jaws relative to each other.
12. In a tie-wire tightening and twisting device of the class described,a handle, a recess-like jaw mounted upon said handle, a rod longitudinally shiftably mounted through said jaw, a second jaw adjustably mounted upon said rod and adapted to enter said recess-like jaw, and means for adjusting said jaws relative to each other, one end of the second jaw extending a greater distance from the axis of said rod than the other end of said second jaw and adapted to enter the recess-like jaw in one position only.
13. In a tie-wire tightening and twisting device of the class described, a jaw member, a rod longitudinally shiftably mounted with respect to said jaw member, a second jaw member mounted on said rod, the rst jaw member having a recessed jaw portion adapted to receive the second jaw member, one end of the rst and second jaw members being positioned a greater distance from the axis of said rod than the other ends of said jaw members, the rst jaw member being provided with a wall at its short end and adapted to receive tie wires through its long end, and means for adjusting said jaw members towards and from each other.
14. In a tie-wire tightening and twisting device, a wire tightening member, one end of said member having means upon which said member may be pivoted and having a tapering slot at the side thereof for grippinga tie-wire and having a circularly shaped wire forming jaw adjacent said slot adapted to receive the tie-wire near the ends and form them in curved form while tightening said tie-wires.
15. In a tie-wire tightening and twisting device, a wire tightening member, one end of the member having a pointed portion upon which said member may be pivoted and having a converging slot at the side thereof for gripping the tie-wire, and an enlarged rounded tie-wire forming portion adjacent thereto between said slot and said point adapted to facilitate the bending of the end portion of the tie-wire simultaneously with the tighening of said wire.
