Description

M. M. BOWERS.
Reversible Plow-Point.
Patented Nov. 13, 1877.
WM%E R ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT Orrron MARCUS M. BOWERS, OF RIOHMON D, VIRGINIA, ASSIGNOR OF A PART OF HIS RIGHT TO THOMAS M. HILTZHIMER, JR, AND JOHN P. SCHERMERHORN,
OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN REVERSIBLE PLOW-POINTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 197,086, dated November 13, 1877; application filed August 10, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARoUs M. BOWERS, of Richmond, in the county of Henrico, and in the State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reversible Plow-Points; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
My invention relates to that class of detachable and reversible plow-points as described in my Letters Patent No. 165,703, dated July 20, 1875; and it consists in a wedge-shaped plow-point having a shank upon each side of which is a central rib, said shank being used in combination with a plowshare in which is an opening made to receive and correspond with the shape of said shank, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the annexed drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view, showing the point detached from the share. Fig. 2 is a plan View, showing the point in its place.
A represents the plowshare, and B is the plow-point. This point B is formed with a projecting shank, O, and is made in wedge shape, equal on both sides from the center, so that it may be placed with either side up, and
i have the same set with relation to the plowshank, in the head of the point, on each side, is D a V-shaped notch, 12.
In the forward end of the share A is made a central opening, 1), extending vertically through the same, and in each side of said opening is a central longitudinal groove, d. This opening, with its grooves, is made to correspond in shape and size with the shank O and its ribs, so that they will fit therein; and the end of the share, on each side of the opening, is formed with a shoulder or projection, e,
to fit in the notches b on the point.
Key-seats may be made in the shank and share to draw and lock the point in place.
I do not wish to be understood as claiming, broadly, what is shown in my former patent, above referred to.
Having thus fully described my invention, what' I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of a plowshare provided with a tapering opening vertically through it from top to bottom, and having a longitudinal groove on each wall of said opening, the wedgeshaped plow-point, having a tapering shank with a central rib on each side, and one or more spaces in the share and between the ribs for the insertion of a wedge or key, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 27th day of July, 1877.
MARCUS M. BOWERS.
