This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a railroad tie.
The invention has for an object 'the construction of a railroad tie which is characterized by a body element for extending transversely beneath a pair of rails and. which is provided with a pair of substantially U-shaped. top projections for en-- gaging against the outer sides of the rails with the bends towards the rails and the arms at right angles to the rails.
Furthermore, as another object of this invention it is proposed to provide the body element with an inner pair of projections and clamp plates for engaging thereon and abutting against the inner sides of the pair of rails.
. Furthermore, it is proposed to arrange the central portion of the tie with a treadle section for convenience in walking.
'As another object of this invention it is proposed to construct the body element with the U-shaped top projections of separate material and detachably connected.
The invention still further proposes the con- "struction of a device of the class described which is of simple durable construction, dependable in use and efficient in operation and which can be manufactured and sold at a reasonable cost.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

The railroad tie, according to this invention, comprises a body element 10 for extending transversely across and beneath a pair of rails 11. The
body 10 is formed with a pair of substantially U-shaped projections 12 for engaging against the outer sides of the rails 11 and formed with the bends towards the rails and the arms at right angles. These projections have straight inner .edges- 13 and sides 14 at right angles thereto.
These projections are hollowed out at the rear 15 whichhollowing-out forms the U-shape previously mentioned. The inner sides 13 are recessed at the bottom 16 for receiving the bottom flange 5 of the rail.
An inner pair of projections 1'7 from the body element serve as anchor posts for clamp plates 18 which engage against the inner sides of the rails 11 and more particularly, against the bottom flanges thereof. The clamp plates 18 are formed. with openings 19 adapted to engage over the projections 17. A treadle portion 20 is formed on the top of the body and is knurled, as indi- ;cated by reference numeral 21 for use when one walks on the ties. The clamp plates 18 are of such size that their rear ends 22 engage against the sides of the treadle portion 20.
A means is provided for holding down the clamp plates and-comprises a cotter pin 23 for 30 each of the projections 1'7. These projections are formed with transverse apertures for-receiving the cotter pins. The cotter pin 23 tapers from the front end 25 to the rear so that it may be driven through the opening 24 and tightly clamp the clamping plate down. After it is engaged in place the ends should be turned out as clearly indicated in Fig. 8. Directly beneath the rails 11 the body 10 is formed with protuberances 26 which serve to reinforce the body at these points. At the edges the body 10 is formed with flanges 27 adapted to engage upon a railroad bed. One of the rails 11 is shown composed of sections with the ends 28 meeting at the center of the projection 12. This particular projection is formed with peg portions 29 engaging through apertures in the sides of the rail sections so as to constitute the joint between the rail sections.
In Figs. 9 and 10 a modification of the invention has been disclosed in which outer clamp elements 30 are shown for engaging against the outer sides of the rails. The clamp element 30 is substantially identical with the projection 12 except that it is formed from a separate piece arranged upon the body 10. A means is provided for securely holding the element 30 in place when a rail is in place upon the tie. This means comprises a recess formed in the body 10 and of a shape so that the clamping piece 30 may engage therein at an inclination to the vertical directed outwards. A
clamping plate 32 is slidable within the body 10 and adapted to engage in a slot 33 formed in the clamp element 30. The plate 32 is connected with a bell crank 34 pivotally mounted at 35. A vertical peg 36 connects with the other end of the bell crank 34 and projects upwards above the top of the body 10 through a lug 37 extended partially over a recess 38 within the body 10 wherein the bell erank i34 is il'olcatedi sprmg 3'9 acts against the bell crank 34 so as to normally ei'cter'id the peg 36 and retract the plate 32. rail is put in place it depresses the peg 36 which causes the extension of the catch plate 32 so that the clamp element 30 is held in place.
The main feature of the invention is the cha ness of manufacture of the rail ties in conjunction with the efiiciency of its operation. -Because the body 10 with the projections '12 and 17 my be made from one piece of material the price is me:- terially reduced. The U-shape of the projections -1'2' provides for extreme strength which is nejcessary m holding the rails in place without undue-weight or excess material. a
