It is customary in constructing grabs of the type herein referred to, to pivot the arms of the bucket sections on fixed pins secured to the cross-beam and to provide a segmental rack on said arms adjacent the pivots, so that the bucket sections open and close evenly.
The mechanism or means employed for openu ing and closing the bucket sections does not constitute part or" this invention as any of the known forms of mechanism may be used in combination with the characteristic features of this invention.
According to the present invention the grab comprises the usual bucket sections connected at their outer corners to the head of the grab; spreader links connecting the hinge arms of the bucket sections to a cross-beam or to a part connected to each end thereof in such a manner that the pivots are free to move outwardly or inwardly as said bucket sections open or close respectively; a pair of vertically disposed pillars on the cross-beam and a pair of links pivoted to the outer edges of the bucket sections and at their other ends to each other and the vertical piliars or to a part carried thereby.
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate this invention:-
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a grab constructed according to one embodiment of the invention, with the bucket sections in the closed position;

The cross-beam 11 is provided at or near each end with a vertically disposed member 15, the upper end of each of which is furnished with two pins 16 which serve as pivots for two spreader bars 17, the other ends of which are mounted on pivots disposed axially with respect to the pivots 5 for the lower ends of the spreader arms 4. The inner ends of the spreader bars 17 adjacent the pivots 16 are preferably provided with interengaging teeth 18.
In operation, it will be seen from Figure 2 that when closing the grab the cross-beam 11 is moved vertically upwards towards the head 3 and as the spreader bars 17 prevent the lower ends of the spreader arms 4 from approaching each other the pivots 8 are compelled to rise and approach each other, a combined digging and scraping action beingimparted to the edges 19 of the bucket sections.
Referring to Figures 3, 4 and 5 of the drawings which illustrate the preferred embodiment of this invention, the bucket sections are provided with two cross-beams 20 and 21, hereinafter referred to as the main cross-beam and supplementary cross-beam respectively. Each end of the supplementary cross-beam 21 is furnished with a single pivot pin 22 adapted to receive the ends of the two spreader links 9, the other ends of which, as in the construction first described, are hinged at 8 to the hinge arms 7. Each end of the main cross-beam 20 is provided with two pivot pins 23 upon which are pivoted two limiting links 2 1 furnished with interengaging teeth 25; the other end of each of said limiting links 24 is pivoted at 26 to the spreader links 9 and in order to prevent any tendency of the upper ends of the hinge arms 7 on the two sides of the grab to spread or approach each other the pivot 26 takes the form of a tie bar (Figure 5).
The supplementary cross-beam 21 is provided with two vertically disposed pillars 27, said pillars being so spaced apart that they constitute guides for the main cross-beam 20 which 11 tions provided at their inner corners with hinge arms and connected at their outer corners by means of spreader arms to the head of the grab, the combination of a cross-beam, spreader links interposed between and pivoted to said hinge arms and cross-beam, vertically disposed pillars at each side of the grab, and spreader bars arranged in aligned pairs, the adjacent ends of each pair being pivoted adjacent the upper end of each of said pillars, the opposite ends of said spreader bars being pivoted to the outer edges of the bucket sections.
2. In a grab embodying the usual bucket sec tions provided at their inner corners with hinge arms and connected at their outer corners by means of spreader arms to the head of the grab, the combination of a cross-beam, spreader links interposed between and pivoted to said hinge arms and cross-beam, interengaging segmental racks furnished on the adjacent ends of said spreader links, a vertically disposed pillar adjacent each end of said crossbeam, spreader bars arranged in aligned pairs, the adjacent ends of each pair being pivoted adjacent the upper end of each of said pillars the opposite ends of said spreader bars being pivoted to the outer edges of the bucket sections and interengaging segmental racks furnished on the adjacent ends of each pair of oppositely disposed spreader bars.
3. In a grab embodying the usual bucket sections provided at their inner corners with hinge arms and connected at their outer corners by means of spreader arms to the head of the grab, the combination with a supplemental crossbeam, of spreader links interposed between and pivoted to said hinge arms and supplemental cross-beam, a main cross-beam, limiting links pivoted to said spreader links and main crossbeam, interengaging segmental racks furnished on the adjacent ends of said limiting links, a vertically disposed pillar adjacent each end of said supplemental cross-beam, spreader bars arranged in aligned pairs, the adjacent ends of each pair being pivoted adjacent the upper end of each of said pillars, the opposite ends of said spreader bars being pivoted to the outer edges of the bucket sections.
