Patented Aug. 7, 1934 UNITED STATES NUT LOCK Samuel Jackson Randall and Clarence Eldon Love, Sweetwater, Tenn.
Application October 12,
2 Claims.
'I'his invention appertains to new and useful improvements in the art of nut locks, and more particularly to a novel nut lock wherein the lock employs a key for manipulation.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide means whereby articles'can be bolted and locked together in an easy and convenien manner.
Another important object of the invention is to provide a key operated nut'lock which, because of its simple construction,v will be of low cost to manufacture. Y
These and various other important objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent to the reader.
In the drawingsz- Figure 1 represents a side elevational view of the nut lock and bolt in use.
Figure 2 represents a sectional View taken substantially on line 2 2 of Figure 4.
Figure 3 represents an inside elevational View of the cap.
Figure 4 represents a sectional view taken substantially on line 4-4 of Figure 3.
Figure 5 represents a perspective view of one of the bolts.
Figure 6 represents a side elevational View of the bolt.
Figure 7 represents an end elevational view of the bolt,
Figure 8 represents a side elevational View of the bolt, looking at the bolt from a position at right angles to the position shown in Figure 6.
Figure 9 represents a top plan view of the nut.
Figure lrepresents a sectional View of the nut taken substantially on line lil-10 of Figure 9,
Figure l1 represents a plan view of the bolt actuating disk.
Referring to the drawings wherein like numerals designate like parts, it can be seen in Figure 1 that numerals 5-6 represent the plates or elements which are to be attached together by this novel nut lock and bolt assembly.
The invention involves a bolt, as shown in Figures 6 and 8 which includes a head 7, a shoulder portion 8 and the threaded shank portion 9 which is provided with a longitudinally extending slot 10. Numeral l1 represents the nut which is of conventional shape, but is provided internally With a pair of diametrically opposite recesses 12-12.
In further carrying out the present invention, numeral 13 represents a cap structure. This cap structure has a barrel 14 disposed axially therein and secured against rotation While rotatably disposed through this barrel is the lock cylinder 15, to the inner end of which is secured the bolt operating disk 16. Numeral 17 represents a swingable closure on the top of the cap for normally closing the key slot 18. Numeral 20 repre- 1933, Serial No. 693,364
(Cl. 151-5)V nut 1l, While the opposite end of each of these bolt members 22 is provided with a transversely extending slot 24. Pin members or screw members 25 are disposed through these slots 24 and thus pivotally and slidably connect the bolts to the actuating disk 16.
Obviously, when the disk 16 is rotated with the cylinder 14 by a key, the bolts 22 can be projected or retracted, as desired.
The inner side of the cap 13 is of such shape as to snugly t over a polygonal-shaped nut 11, as is clearly shown in Figure 2.
While the foregoing specication sets forth theinvention in specific terms, it is to be understood that numerous changes in the shape, size and materials may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed hereinafter.
Having described the claimed as new is:-
l. A nut lock comprising a longitudinally split bolt, a nut having a recess in the bore thereof and being engaged onto the bolt, a cap for disposition over the nut, and latch means in the cap and adapted for disposition in the slot of the bolt and engageable into the said recess in the nut when properly placed over the said nut, said latch means including a rotatable lock cylinder having a key slot therein, Ward members between the cylinder and the cap, a bolt member, and a pin and slot connection pivotallyc-onnecting the bolt to the inner end of the cylinder.
2. A nut lock comprising a longitudinally split bolt, a nut having a recess in the bore thereof and being engaged onto the bolt, a cap for disposition over the nut, a latch member in the nut engageable with the bolt, and a rotatable and axially located member on the cap for operating the said latch.
