IMPROVEMENT IN HINGES.

Specication forming part of Letters Patent N0. 196,791, dated November 6, 1877; application filed September 14, 1877.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, BENJAMIN FAHNE- sTooK and HENRY FRANKLIN BECKHAM, of Watsonville, in the county of Santa Cruz and State of California, have invented a new and Improved Butt-Hinge, of which the following is a specification:

This invention relates to butt-hinges; and

the nature of our invention consists in a re-` versible or right-and-left butt-hinge, which is constructed with a removable solid eye, having secured to it a washer, and also pintles, which latter are designed to enter double-barrel eyes formed on one of the leaves, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.

` In the annexed drawing, Figures l and 2 are vertical sectional views of the improved butthinge. Figs. 3 and 4 are horizontal sections. Figs. 5 and 6 are details.

The letters A A designate the two leaves of the improved butt-hinge, and B B two eyes which are formed on the leaf A, extending half I the length thereof, and arranged in close relation to each other. leaf A', which may be perforated to receive the pintle a of an ornament, D, corresponding I C designates the eye of the to a similar ornament formed on the opposite end of the hinge. E designates a removable eye, which has a concave groove in it to receive the eye C and form therewith a closetting joint. This eye E is perforated on top to receive a pin, b, on the ornament D, and it is rigidly secured to or formed on a washer, c.

This washer is constructed with pintles el cl e, the upper one, cl, of which enters the eye C, and the lower ones, d c, of which enter the eyes B B, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.

It Will be seen from the above description that the leaf A can be adjusted for either the right or a left hand side of -a door, and this l adjustment can be effected with great facility.
