ALLOCATOR FOR DUPLICATING STAMPS Filed Jan. 10, 1953 2 SheetsSheet 2 Patented July 24, 1934 omits strlaris 12 Claims.
My invention relates to-a device for accurately locating the impression of a duplicating stamp, particularly of the stencil type, upon the card or sheet upon which such impression. is to be Jilimade.
Thepresent: invention-has for its chief object and. is directed principally to extending the advantages attainedby -theallocator described and claimed in my copending application filed Decem- Qi .ber 3, 1932, Serial'No. 645,560; now Patent No. 1,949,864,;and1 toiacilitating and rendering even more accurate the-operations therein described.
A further object of thepresent invention is to provide'in connection'with mechanism of the type 15,? described in: my said application, means for so accurately'gauging the location of an impression on a card or sheet that such stamp or aplurality of such stamps may be used for successive impressions, as in multi-color work.
Further. objects of; my invention will appear from the following detailed description-thereof.
In the-drawings=z Figure 1; is a: planview of a device constructed-- in-accordanceswith-this'invention; it Figure Zisasection online'2-2 of Figure-1 Figure 3 is a plan View of an: auxiliary-device:
the'rean fiange- 4 Securedbetween. each.- pair of? the-extensionsfi-and-7-is a-rod 8the upper surface of; each. of which may be calibratedas: shown.
Slidablymountedfineachof: therods 8 is a sleeveore collar 9; said collars-serving as end' supports for-a transverse rod 10; The; collars Q'are provided: withpointers 11 which areadaptedtoread 4515011 the-calibrations-of the rods-8; Set screws 12v Y thread; into the collars 9 and secure thesame in desired location-onithe rods 3', referencebeing hadto the desired forward orwrearwardi adjustment of the rodl=with-respect toy-the bed? 1. 59? Slidablymounted:on-the'rod are sleeves or col1ars 13-4-31 to l whichare' secured arms 14-14- carrying a;plate-15 which is adapted tolieflat on the bed plate-L. Alsosecured to-thecollarsl-Barespring arms.16l 6, to-theforward ends of: which. aipiate 117 is secured by soldering welding or in screws 22: being provided to; secure such adjustm ment; The upper surface of the'rod- 10, is callbrated as shown, and'a pointer-23 provided on one of the collars to read on said calibrations tofacilitate such adjustments. Similarly forward and rearward motion of'the rod- 10 with respect to plate 1 being permitted by the sliding collarsQ -Q. on the rods 8-8, forward and rearward; adjustments on the platen on the bed plate may be made,
Secured between the upper; iorward=ends of-the 7 1s; flanges 2 and 3: is a transverse plate 24 which is provided with a plurality of deepnotches or slots 25; The-plate 24 has downwardly extendingv end sections 26 between which a: cylindrical rod- 27- is secured either-by soldering, welding or in any other suitable manner. The rodZFl thus secured extends from end toyendroflthe plate-24, and, is located just under. the forwardedge-thereof' so as; to: be accessible through the'front portions of theslots 25l,
Securedon the stamp 28 1s aplate 29 which has 8dr outwardly extending-lugs 30-30; the lower edges. of same being provided with notches 3-1. The lugs 30=--30 are adapted to enter-a pair of slots- 25 and the-notches 31! of. saidlugs areadaptedto'fit overandirideuponthe rod 27; Saidlugs and notches. 9B5 inconnection' with therod-27 thus serve to allocate the stamp with respect to the platen- 2-1- whichhas, of: course, been attachedto the bedover the. pins 20 andlalsodn relationrto-the slots=25 of theplate 24;
In order to achieve the ultimateinacouracy of adjustment of the platenwith: respect to-the slots'25lin plate-24; and corresponding accuracy the impressions tow-be made, I provide antattachment,consisting of a plate 32 having-sleeves &9 33-33 in; which rods- 34;-34: arerigidly mounted; The plate 32 has depending end flanges 35-35 which are adaptedto-enter pairs of slots 25-25-; said flangeshave-notches 36v adapted to fit. over the rod 27; and also rear notches 3'17.- which-engage the plate 24' at the rear ends. of the slots 25-, When; the plate 32 is thus mounted with the notches 36 resting on the rod 27, andthe'rear notchesil'l. engaging the-plate24; the rods 34-13% will be suspended forwardly oven the platen 21.; 110
Slidably mounted on the rods 34-34 are sleeves 38-38 which carry a plate 39, said plate thus being mounted in slidable adjustment on the rods 3434; set screws 4040 secure such adjustment. '6 The plate 39 is provided with three slots 41, 42
and 43, each of which is provided with an opening 44 to the edge of the plate. Adapted to be mounted in the slots 41, 42 and 43, or either or any number of said slots, are bolts 45, the heads of which engage the under side of the plate at the sides of the slots. Rotatably mounted on each of the bolts 45 is a lug 46 on which a finger 47 is pivotally secured. Wing nuts 48 thread on to the bolts 45 and secure the lugs in desired adjustment. Adapted to be mounted slidably on either of the rods 34 is a collar 49 which is secured in desired adjustment on the rodby means of a set screw 50. Rotatably mounted on the collar 49 is a lug 51 which is secured in desired adjustment by means of a set screw 52. Pivotally secured to the free end of the lug 51 is a finger 53, similar to the fingers 4'7.
InFigure 5 l; have shown a modified form of the plate 24 and the lugs carried by the stamp 28, "in which form said lugs are provided with terminal balls 54 which are adapted to enter into depressions 55 of the plate 24.
The manner of using the device as above described is as follows:
The operator places the card or sheet to be printedon the platen 21 with'its edges abutting the flanges 18 and 19 of the plate 1 on which the platen is then moved into approximate relation with the plate 24, and a pair of its slots 25 or depressions 55. The stamp is then placed with its lugs 30 in said slots 25 and with the notches 31 in engagement with the rod 27 or with the balls 54 in depressions 55. The stamp is then ,rocked forwardly to make an impression. If the location of the impression on the card or sheet is not accurate with respect to the side or upper or lower margins the platen may be moved laterally by sliding the collars 13 on the rod 10 and forwardly or rearwardly moving the entire as- 5 sembly on the rods 88. If only a fair degree of accuracy as to margin is to be attained, it may be that such adjustment will be entirely satisfactory for allocating'the platen and sheet vvith'respect to the stamp guided in the slots 25 and by the rod 27. Where, however, extreme accuracy is desired, which will always be the case where impressions are to be made from a plurality of stencils, as in two or more color work,
theproper adjustments are attained by means of the fingers 4747 and 53; This adjustment 53. By this means, as will be seen, the location.
of the impression on the card may be predetermined with extremeaccuracy, and it thus becomes a simple matter to make subsequent im- 79- pressions merely by repeated operations of the duplicating stamp. For the sake of making such accurate adjustment, it will be understood that it may not at all times be necessary to use as many as three fingers, one or two being suffi- 7 cient, the desired number and placement of the silient mount for said plate, a second plate, means fingers in the slots of plate 59 and on the rods 34-34 being determined in each case with respect to the Work in hand.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
