ends extending into said retainers, and in elongated central portion, having its lateral edges depressed, carrier retainers disposed above said edges, e'ach retainer including a longitudinal strip having an indented edge inthe zone of the corresponding depressed lateral edge, and a plurality of flexible wire carriers disposed transversely across the central portion of said holder, each with its ends extending into said jacent groups without danger of their shifting" out of position, as indicated inFig. 1, by"-t hei;i
spacing of one carrier away froma group of carriers. It will be understood that the number and spacing of the carriers in the holder and the length of the holder relative toits width shown in the drawing is not intended in any way to so limit this device, as under conditions of ordinary construction and use, the relative length of'the holder will be much greater and the relative spacing of the carriers much closer,' The independent holding of eachcarrier, not' only accomplishes such holding purposes but it incidentally spaces the carriers and provided, 1
as is normally the case, that the spacing of the notches in the carrier retainers is uniform, it
also uniformly spaces the cards so that an index number, title, or name, may be placed on'the lower edge of the card and such indicia will be properly positioned and displayed for reference.
The reading matter on any card is accessible by simply turning up the cards above it and this operation of swinging up the cards does not Wear or affect the connection of the card with its carrier for the cards merely'swing' and hinge about the wire carrier.
In the drawing the carrier-retainers are made an integral part of the holder, but they may of course be separately made and secured to the remainder of the holder.
Having described my invention, what I claim is- 1. In a card index, a holder comprising an elongated central portion, having its lateral edges depressed, carrier-retainers disposed above said edges, each retainer including a-longitudinal strip having a notched edge depending below said. central portion in the zone of the corresponding depressed lateral edge, and a plurality of flexible carriers disposed transversely acrossthe central portion of said holder, each with its engagement with notches thereof.
2. In a card index, a holder comprising an elongated central portion, having its lateral edges depressed, carrier-retainers disposed above said edges, each retainer including a longitudiretainers, and thereof.
5. In acardindex, a sheet-metal holder, having anelongated central portion, with its lateral edges depressed, carrier retainers integral with said edges, and extending thereabove, each retainer including a longitudinal strip having an indented edge in the zone'of the corresponding depressed lateral edge, and a plurality of flexible carriers disposed transversely across the central portion of said holder, each with its ends ex-- tending into said retainers, and in engagement Withindentations thereof.
6.In a card index,- a holder-comprising a pairof elongated retainers spaced apart and disposed in parallelism and a central portion between and integral with said retainers; each of sai'd'retainers comprising a channel having its open sidefacing said central portion and having its lower leg extended inward beyond the upper leg and upward to a junction with an edge of said central "-portion, said upper leg having a downwardly projecting flange indented at sub-' stantially equal intervals, said junction edge extending upward at least level with the lower edge of saidiiange, and a plurality of flexible carriers disposed transversely across the central portion of said holder each with its ends ex-' tending into said retainers and held'in engagement with 5 indentations thereof by the said junction edge. H "7. In a card index, a holder comprising a pair of elongated retainersspaced apart and disposed in parallelism and a central portion between and integral with said retainers; each of said retainers'comprising a channel having its open side facingsaid central portion and having its lower leg extended inward beyond the upper leg and upward to a junction with an edge of said central-portion, said upper leghaving a downwardly projecting flange indented at'substantially equal intervals, and with its edge approximately level with said junction and a plurality of flexible carriers disposed transversely across the central portion of said holder each. with its in engagement with indentations ends extending into said retainers and held in nal strip having a notched depending edge inthe zone of the corresponding depressed lateral edge, and a plurality of flexible wirecarriers disposed transversely across the central portion of said holder, each with its ends extending into said retainers, and in engagement with notches thereof. 3. In a card index, a sheet-metal holder, having an elongated central portion, with its lateral edges depressed, carrier retainers integral with said edges, and extending above said central engagement with indentations thereof by said junction edge. I
8. A card index holder for use with flexible carriers-saidholder comprising an elongated central portion, having.v its lateral edges depressed, carrier retainers disposed above said edgesfeach retainer including a longitudinal depending'fiange having an indented edge .below the plane of said central portion'in-the zone of portion, each retainer including a longitudinal} strip having a notched edge depending below said central portion in the zone of the corre sponding depressed lateral edge, and a plurality the corresponding depressed lateral edge.
