COMBINED DOORBOLT AND NIGHT LATCH Filed Aug. 22, 1953 Patented July 10, 1934 r I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE COMBINED DOORBOLT AND NIGHT LATCH Hugh E. Anglym High Point, N. 0., assignor of one-half to Marvin R. Snipes, High Point, N. C.
Application August 22, 1933, Serial No. 686,304
' 2 Claims. (01. '10-'29) This invention relates to door locks and more tion 20' for engagement with a keeper or aper particularly to a combined latch and locking tu'red plate which is adapted to be mounted in means of the push and pull type. the frame of the door.
An object of this invention is to provide a door A bolt operating member generally designated latch and lock which is so constructed that the as 21 is slidable transversely of the housing 60. door bolt can be locked by a latching member through an opening 22 in the rear wall 23 of the operable from the inside of the door, thereby prehousin 10 and through an opening 24 in the re venting the movement of the latch without the movable wall or plate 12. This bolt operating use of a key. member in thepresent instance is constructed in 10 Another object of this invention is to provide the form of a bar which is substantially rectan- 65 a latch of this character which is exceedingly gular in transverse section and which is provided simple'in construction and wherein the looking with a substantially v shaped recess or cut=out means for the latch engages the door bolt operportion 25. This cut-out portion 25 provides a ating member so as to hold this member against cam surface on one side of the bolt operating "fi unauthorized movement. member 21 and the bolt has a rectangular 70.
The above and various other objects and adpeni 26 through which the bolt operating vantages of this invention will in part be demember 21 is slidable. The cam portion of scribed and in part be understood from the folth bolt p rati g m mb r 1 a s a a t lowing detailed description of the present preth rear ide of he r tan ar p i 6 and g ferred embodiment, the same being illustrated in the spring 19 h a ffici n tension ha i the accompanying drawing wherein:- will normally maintain the bolt 15in projected In the drawing: 7 position and will move the bolt operating member Figure 1 is a detail side elevation of a lock coninto inoperative position. structed according to the preferred embodiment The bolt operating member 21 has a reduced :25 of this invention, partly in section, mounted on a n r end portion 27' onjwhich a knob 28 o I door shown in fragmentary form; suitable configuration may be mounted and the Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on the line Other or oppos efld 0f t Operating em e 22 of Figure 1; 21 is also reduced as at 29 and a knob 30 may Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on the line be attached to this Tdllcd time! end p 3 3 3 of Figure 2, The door bolt operating member 21 is held 35 Figure 4 is a fragmentary side elevation of the against movement y means of a locking member inner end of the lock operating member showing designated ThiS locking member 31 is 0 t Same engaged by a conventional key for movestructed, in the present instance, in the form of ment of the operating member for the locking 3 u-shaped member 32 which is D V W 35 member a reduced lower end portion 33 and an operating Referring now more particularly to th drawmember 34 is loosely disposed between the paraling wherein like numerals of reference designate 191 legs of the i member 32 and slid corresponding parts throughout the several views, able through. an opqmng 35 provlqed m the numeral 10 designates generally a housing plate This operatmg member 34 provlded 40 provided with a facing plate 11 at one end thereof. ggg Z 53 gig 2 1%? digg s l i n aifi gie The housing 10 is provided with a removable side to the vertical and a pin 37 which connects the 12 which is attached to the housing 10 as by a two parallel legs of the U-shaped member 32 is bolt 13 Which is threaded through the plate 12 loosely disposed in this slot 36. Movement of and into a block 14 which is carried by the hOUS- the lock operating member 34 inwardly of the 00 t; housing 10 will force the locking member 31 A d or b t generally designated as 15 is Sliddownwardly until the reduced lower end 33 is able in the housi g 10 h ou an Opening 15 in seated in a recess 38 provided in the upper surthe facing plate 11 and this door bolt 15 has a face of t t perating member 21, 50 reduced stem or inner end portion 17 which is The inner end of the lock operating member slidable t u a u de 18 Ca ied by the 110115- 34 is provided with a cam shaped extension 39 ing 10 and a spring 19 engages about this stem 17 which extends through the front wall 23 of the and constantly urges the bolt 15 outwardly casing or housing 10 and projects into a reduced through the plate 11. The door bolt 15 is prohousing 40 which is mounted on the outer face 55' vided with a conventional bevelled outer end porof the wall 23. The housing 40 is provided with 110.
In the use and operation of this improved type of night latch and door bolt when it is desired to operate the door bolt independent of the night latch or look the locking member 31 is raised by pulling the operating member 34 outwardly through the plate 12. This operating member 34 will hold the locking member 31 in:
either raised or lowered position the inclination f the slot 36 being such that the weight of the locking member 31, when in raised position,
will not move the operating member 34. When.
a person on the outside of the door desires to enter through the door the knob 30 is pushed inwardly, thereby causing the door bolt 15 to be moved inwardly of the housing 10 under the action of the cam portion 25. Thesame result is accomplished by a person desiring to pass through the door in the opposite direction by.
ipuli on the knob 28 which will move the operating member 21 in the same direction.
Where it is desired to put on the night latch the locking member 31, is moved into locking position within the recess 38 by pushing the operating member 34 inwardly of the housing 10 and this movement will project the key. engaging portion 39 of the operating member 34 into the key housing 40. 34 is in this locked position pressure in a hori- "'21 will be resisted by the reduced lower end portion 33 and as shown in the drawing the locking member 31 is disposed at a right angle to the operating member 21. It will, therefore,
When the operating member zontal direction on the bolt operating member.
pulling the operating member 34 from the in' side of the door or by moving the operating member 34 under the action of a key such as a key 41 positioned in the key housing 40.
It is, of course, understood that various "changes and modifications may be made in the details of construction and design of the above specifically described embodiment of this inven- -tion without departing from the spirit thereof,
suchchangesand modifications being restricted :only by the scope of the following claims.
I claim:- 1. A device as set forth, comprising a housing,
a bolt slidable in the housing, a bolt operating memberslidable transversely of the housing and engaging said bolt, means constantly urging said bolt into operative position, a bifurcated locking member disposed in the housing, means for slidably mounting said locking member in the housing, said bolt operating member having a recess to receive a portion of said locking member, a horizontally movable locking member operating member, said locking member operating member having an obliquelyinclined slot therethrough, and means carried by said locking member and disposed in said slot whereby to vertically shift said locking member upon horizontal movement of said locking member operating member.
2. A device as set forth, comprising a housing, a bolt. slidable in said housing, a bolt operating member slidable transversely of the housing, a locking member disposed in the housing, said locking member having an elongated slot therein, an operating member for said locking member loosely disposed in'said slot, said bolt operating member having a recess to. receive a portion of said locking member, said operating member for said locking member having an obliquely inclined slottherethrough, a pin carried by the locking member and loosely disposed in said slot,
a cam shaped extension integral with said operating member for said locking member, and
a key housing enclosing said extension.
