8 Claims.
The present invention relates to an improvement in corsets, surgical supports and garments of the character in which sections thereof are regulated to the body of the wearer.
An object of my invention is to provide a garment in which novel means are provided for concealing or shielding the adjustment to obviate the possibility of buckles, slides and the like showing through the outer garment of the wearer.
A further object of my invention is to provide adjustment shields which tend to smooth or fiatten out the adjacent laced sections of the garment yet do not interfere with the adjustment of such sections and permit the manipulation of adjustment means for such sections with the shields in position if desired.
Other objects and advantages will appear as the description progresses and the novel features of my invention will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Herebefore garments have been designed in which various covers or shields have been provided for smoothing out the adjustment means of the garment. However, prior covers or shields have been limited in their application to the laced area between adjacent edges of adjustable sections of which United States patents to Kuebler, No. 1,136,242; Shaw, No. 1,247,019; and Stewart, et al, No; 1,728,985, are typical examples. As is apparent from inspection, covers or shields of this type are not adaptable to the strap and buckle lacing manipulating type of garment adjustment exemplified by applicants United States Patent No. 1,438,942. Furthermore, the herebefore referred covers or shields for the most part are not readily secured in an operative position, especially if the adjustment is located at the rear of the garment; moreover, they have resulted in undesirable limitations being placed upon the adjustment of separate adjustable garment sections. It is in the provision of suitable covers of shields for buckles or slides which are movable along a path upon the outer surface of the garment obviating the enumerated objections of prior covers or shields, that the present invention resides.
In the accompanying drawings wherein several preferred forms of my invention are disclosed for the purpose of illustration,
Fig. 1 is an elevation of a garment in an extended condition embodying my improved adjustment shields.
Figs. 2 and 3 are partial views similar to Fig. 1 of further modifications of my invention.
In carrying out my invention a garment 1 which is illustrated as a surgical support has quick 1933, Serial No. 653,812
attachment means 2 securable at the front or side of the garment and separate sections 34 with their adjacent edges engaged by lacing 5 for adjusting the garment to the wearer. The lacing 5 passes through eyelets in one section of the garment and converges to central points 6 adjacent the outer surface of the opposite section to be engaged by tab member 7 carrying buckles or slides 8. The lacing 5 may have movable engagementwith the tab '7 as disclosed in applicants patent referred to above or the lacing may be fixedly secured to the tab as is well known. Adjustment straps 9 permanently anchored to the garment at 10 pass through the buckles or slides 8 and are return-bent to present ends 11 which may be readily grasped by the wearer and drawn forward to tighten the garment.
Adjustment covers or shields 1213 are superimposed upon the outer surface of the sections 3-4, respectively, and are permanently stitched thereto along the lines abcd. The shields 1218 are preferably of non-elastic material with a section of elastic material 14 stitched to the same along lines l5l6, respectively. With the exception of the stitching along the lines a-b-cd, the shields 1213 are freely superimposed upon the sections 34, being removably secured to the bottom of the garment by snaps or buttons 17.
The elastic section 14 has several functions. It retains the unsecured edges of the shields 12--l3 adjacent the opposite edges of the sections 3-4 in a smooth state closely conforming to the garment. Also, it permits relative adjustment of the sections 34 without interference or limitations being placed thereupon. Furthermore, the elastic section 14 tends to give a certain yieldable regulation of the garment to the wearer and has a decided efiect in assisting to flatten or smooth out the adjacent edges of the sections 3-4 and their associated lacing.
With the shields in position as shown the wearer if desired may freely move the buckles 8 and associated parts in opposite directions along a path of adjustment of the lacing 5; in all adjustment the buckles between shields and the garment. It is to be noted that the stitching of the shields 12-13 is terminated at d, thus providing for changing angularity of the lacing 5 between the points de during adjustment. When desired the shields 12l3 and section 1A may be lifted to fully expose the adjustment means by merely unfastening the means 17.
In the modification shown in Fig. 2, the lacings 18 are shown as permanently secured to the tabs l9 merely by way of example. In lieu of the elastic section 14, the shields 2021 are stitched to the adjustable sections 22-23 along the line ]57 and an elastic webbing 24 is secured to the shields at 25. The webbing 2% has a hook 26 secured thereto which is adapted to engage the lacing 18 as an anchorage, thus yieldably retaining the edges of the shield 2C-2l, freely superimposed upon the sections 2223, in close conformity therewith.
In Fig. 3, a further modification of my invention is disclosed in which the shield 27 is permanently stitched to the adjustable section along the lines it 7'; the remaining portion of the shield being freely superimposed upon the section 28 with the exception that the edge of the shield overlying the laced edge is stitched or otherwise secured thereto at points 7cZm-n amply spaced to permit the passage and changing angularity of the lacing 29. The lower portion of the shield 27 is caused to closely conform to the section 28 by securing one end of the garter strap 30 thereto at 31; the other end of the strap 30 is anchored to the section 28 at 32. Obviously the lower portion of the shield 27 may be secured in the manner shown in Fig. 1 and vice versa.
From the foregoing description it will become apparent that I have provided adjustment shields which are capable of smoothing out the projection of the buckles or slides which are moved along a path upon the outer surface of the garment; my improved shields being characterized by the fact that the adjustment of the garment is permitted with the shields in position and that the shield may be adjusted into and out of position with comparative ease.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
1. In a garment of the class described, the combination with a pair of adjustable sections, of lacing connecting the adjacent edges of said sections, a pair of members operatively engaged by said lacing and movable along a path upon the outer sru'face of said sections, buckles carried by said members, adjustment straps permanently secured to said sections and having portions thereof engaging said buckles, adjustment shields associated with each of said sectionsand extending in opposite directions from said edges, said shields being permanently secured to said sections above and overlying the path of movement of said members and associated parts, means for retaining the lower portion of said shield adjacent said sections, said shields in position closely conforming to said sections yet being freely superimposed thereupon in the locality of the path of adjusting movement of said members and associated parts.
2. In a garment of the class described, the combination with a pair of adjustable sections, of lacing connecting the adjacent edges of said sections, a pair of lacing engaging members hav ing buckles associated therewith movable along 3 a path upon the outer surface of said sections, adjustment straps permanently secured to said sections and having portions thereof engaging said buckles, adjustment shields associated with each of said sections and extending in opposite directions from said edges, said shields being permanently secured to said sections above and overlying the path of movement of said members and associated parts, means for removably securing the lower portions of said shields to said sections, said shields in position closely conforming to said sections yet freely superimposed thereupon in the locality of the path of adjusting movement of said members and associated parts.
