M MM Patented June 19, 1934 UNITED; STATES METHOD AND APPQEATUS FOR DRAWING Herman S. Worthington, Yardley, Pa., assignor to The American Steel and Wire Company of New Jersey, a corporation of New Jersey Application May 24; 1933, Serial No. 672,703
3 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in a method and apparatus for drawing wire, and more particularly to that type of wire which is known as dead-cast. That is to say, wire that is drawn, or cast, without lateral deflection, in order that a complete convolution, or turn, thereof when removed from. the wire drawing block and supported in a vertical position with the two ends at the lowest point will have an axis, or center line, in a vertical plane.
One object of the present invention is to provide a novel method and apparatus for drawing wire which includes initially winding the same for a few convolutions on a wire drawing block, and in diverting the wire from the block for an intermediate dead-casting operation, after which it is returned to the block.
Another object is the provision of a novel method and apparatus for obtaining dead-cast wire, together with means for adjusting the desired ,final diameter of the coil.
These and other objects will appear after referring to the drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a plan of the apparatus of the invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional elevation on the line 11-11 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is an enlarged detailed elevation of part of the apparatus.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the numeral 2 designates a wire drawing frame upon which there is mounted a rotating wire drawing block 3. A conventional wire drawing die 4 is mounted upon a die holder 5, which is suitably secured to the wire drawing frame 2.
According to the present invention, a support 6 is horizontally slotted, as at 6, provided with a vertical shaft 7, and suitably secured to the wire drawing frame. A vertical shaft 8 is mounted for sliding movement in the slot 6* and a screw 9 threaded through a portion of the support 6 for adjusting its position relative thereto. The screw 9 is maintained in adjusted position by means of a nut 10, and a nut 12 is threaded on the end of the vertical shaft 8 for securing it against movement after it has been adjusted in the slot 6.
A grooved roller 14 is mounted for rotation on the shaft '7, while a relatively smaller grooved roller 15 is similarly mounted on the adjustable shaft 8.
In operation, the wire to be drawn, which is indicated at A, is threaded through the die 4 and secured to the wire drawing block 3 in the well known manner. The drawing block is rotated several times and stopped, after which the several convolutions of the wire wound thereon are loosened and one strand thereof passed around the roller 14.
The roller 15 is adjusted to govern the diameter desired in the coil, which increases as the distance between the roller and the center of the wire drawing block 3 increases. This adjustment is effected by means of the screw 9, which is locked in position by the nut 10; The nut 12 is then tightened on the shaft 8 in order to maintain the latter in adjusted position.
As the wire is wound back onto the wire drawing block 3 from the roller 14, which is in a straight line with the block or, in other words, at a, vertical angle of 90 degrees with respect to its axis, it will be dead-cast and have the characteristics previously referred to.
While I have shown and described one specific first named roller, said first named roller being operable to receive at least one strand of wire from said block and to return the same directly thereto.
2. Apparatus for producing dead-cast wire comprising, in combination, a wire drawing die, a drawing block, a roller adjacent said drawing block having a return feed angle of degrees with respect to the axis of said block, a tension roller for cooperating with said first named roller, and means for adjusting the position of said tension roller with respect to said drawing block, said first named roller being operable to receive at least one strand of wire from said block and to return the same directly, thereto.
3. Apparatus for producing dead-cast wire comprising, in combination, a wire drawing die, a drawing block, a support adjacent said .drawing block, a roller mounted on said support having a vertical return feed angleof 90 degrees with respect to the axis of the block, a horizontal slot in said support, a vertical shaft disposed for movement. in said slot, an auxiliary roller mounted on said shaft, means for adjusting the position of said shaft, and means for locking said shaft in adjusted position.
