ArNr orric This invention relates to a protector for use in conjunction with a thermal hair waving or curling means to protect a persons scalp from being burned or injured by steam and the heat 5 of the waving or curling means during the hair waving or curling operation.

The principal object of the invention is the provision of a protector of the indicated character, which will resist heat; which will so engage the hair as to prevent steam from reaching the scalp to thus avert burning of the scalp; which may be clampingly engaged with the hair for the aforesaid purpose, and also to prevent the protector from slipping out of place while in use; which may be readily applied and removed;

and which will be of substantial and emcient construction.

Referring now more particularly to the several views of the drawing, it will be apparent that the protector of the present invention, as illustrated, comprises two companion members or 0 pieces 10 and 11, of substantially the same size and of substantially the same structural features. The members or pieces 10 and 11 are made of heat-resisting material capable of withstanding extreme heat without injuring the same, and such material for the intended purpose is made of bake'lite, or equivalent composition which comes in sheets. The members 10 and 11 are cut to the desired size. The member 10 has one side edge portion thereof cut away so 4 as to provide serrations 12 offset with respect to the adjacent side edge portions 13. The member 11 has one side edge portion thereof cut to provide a series of serrations 14 similar to the serrations 12, but in line with the side edge por- The members 10 and 11 have holes which register with each other to accommodate a suitable element 16 and engage with a washer 17, so that adjacent ends of the members 10 and 11 will be connected together 15 1 for movement in different parallel planes with respect to each other, and so that the portions 13 and 15, as Well as the serrations 12 and 14, may overlap each other side by side. It will be apparent that the members 10 and 11 are pivotally 5 connected together and may be moved relatively to an opened relation, as shown in Fig. 2, and a closed relation, as shown in Fig. 3. It will be apparent that a block or strand of hair may be engaged by the members 10 and 11, in which the hair will be clampingly held crimped by the as overlapped serrations l2 and 14. The hair is held in this manner by the employment of suitable means, such as the clip 18, pivoted, as at 19, to the member 10 and engageable with the M member 11, as shown most clearly in Figs. 3 and 4. The clip 18 may be readily swung into and out of engagement with the member 11 in opening and closing the members to apply and remove the protector.

It is to be understood that the protector will be disposed between the hair-waving means and the scalp, although it is desired to employ a felt pad 20 between the protector and the scalp. Such pad 26 is provided with a slit 21, indicated in dotted lines in 1; the hair extending through the slit 21 and being clampingly engaged by the members 10 and 11. The serrations 12 and 14 prevent the protector from slipping out of place. The overlapping of the serrations 12 and 14 eliminates any a openings and thereby excludes or prevents steam 0 from reaching the scalp. The scalp is also protected from being burned from the heat of the waving means, by reason of the members 10 and 11 being made of heat-resisting material. It will also be apparent that the other advantages hereinabeve specified are afforded by the protector having the features described.

I claim:

1. A scalp protector for disposition between a thermal hair-waving means and the scalp, said protector comprising companion members made of heat-resisting material, said members being engageable with a strand of the hair, with the engaged portions of said members overlapped to clamp the hair, to exclude steam and to keep heat from reaching the scalp during the hair-waving operation, and means to maintain the members in the overlapped relation.

A scalp protector for disposition between a thermal hair-Waving means and the scalp, said protector comprising companion members made of heat-resisting material, said members being connected together for movement in diiferent parallel planes with respect to each other, said 165 members being engageable with a strand of the hair, with the opposing side faces of the engaged portions of said members overlapped to clamp the hair, to exclude steam and to keep heat from reaching the scalp during the hair-waving opera- 110 tion, and means to maintain the members in the overlapped relation.

3. A scalp protector for disposition between a thermal hair-waving means and the scalp, said protector comprising companion members made of heat-resisting material, said members being engageable with a strand of the hair, with the engaged portions of said members overlapped to clamp the hair to exclude steam and to keep heat from reaching the scalp during the hair-waving operation, said portions being serrated to aid in keeping the protector in place, and means to maintain the members in the overlapped relation.

A scalp protector for disposition between a thermal hair-Waving means and the scalp, said protector comprising companion members made of heat-resisting material, said members being connected together for movement with respect to each other, said members being engageable with a strand of the hair, with the engaged portions of said members overlapped to clamp the hair, to exclude steam and to keep heat from reaching the scalp during the hair-waving operation, and a clip carried by one member and engageable with the other, to maintain the members in the overlapped relation.

A scalp protector for disposition between a thermal hair-Waving means and the scalp, said protector comprising companion members made of heat-resisting sheet material, said members being connected together so that portions thereof may be clampingly engaged with a strand of the hair, flatwise, in overlapped relations, to exclude steam and to keep heat from reaching the scalp during the hair-waving operation, and means to maintain the members engaged with the hair as aforesaid.

6. A scalp protector of the character described comprising two pieces of heat-resisting sheet material, a pivot connecting adjacent ends of said pieces together so that edge portions of one piece will lap edge portions of the other piece, and means connected with the remaining end of one of said pieces engageable with the adjacent end of the other one of said pieces, to maintain said edge portions clampingly engaged with a strand of hair.
