This invention relates to stock quotation projecting machines in general, and more especially to devices for controlling themovement of the ape.
Among the objects of the present invention, it is aimed to provide a device for effecting the smooth and even passage of the tape through the projecting mechanism of a stock quotation projecting machine, and also to effect smoothly spreading out the portion of the tape being projected, as well as the slow starting and stopping of the tape, all to the common end of projecting a picture on the screen of the quotations being projected, that can be observed by the average trader for an extended period of time, without danger of eye strain or discomfort.
To this end the present invention aims specifically to provide a tape controlling device, consisting of a device for advancing the tape into the projecting position, and a device for receiving the tape after being projected, and drawing the tape therefrom, which device operates at a slightly faster rate of speed than the advancing device.

In the embodiment illustrated, there is provided a main frame having an upper platform 1 and a lower platform 2. On the upper platform 1 there is provided a support 3 on which is mounted the ticker'generally designated by the reference character T, having a printing mechanism and ejecting mechanism of the standard 'type such as used today in certain tickers. To one side of the support 3 there is provided the lamp housing 4 in which is mounted the lamp 5. The rays of the lamp 5 are received by the lens 6, in the lamp housing, from which they- These and other features, capabilities and ad-- images of the printed matter on the tape are projected onto the reflector 10 in the screen housing 11, supported by brackets 12 suitably secured to an adjacent partition or wall member 13. From the reflector 10 the images are projected onto the screen 14.
The tape a, see Fig. 1, is ejected by the ticker T, and received between the idler 15 and an initial tape engaging roller 16. From there the tape passes across the light aperture or projecting position of the projecting mechanism, over to and between the idler 17 and a second tape engaging roller 18. From there the tape a passes down to and between the idler 19 and the driven roller 20, whereupon the tape passes beneath the finger 21 of the lever 22 to the rewind reel 23.
The main feature of the present invention consists in the cooperation of the rollers 16 and 18 with the tape a. The roller 13 is slightly larger than the roller 16, and consequently, if driven at the same rate of speed, will transmit to the tape a a speed faster than the speed transmitted to the tape a by the roller 16. In order tocause the roller 18 to operate at the same rate of speed as the roller 16, the roller 16 has secured thereto a sprocket wheel 24 similar in dimension to the sprocket wheel 25 secured to the roller 18, which sprocket wheels 24 and 25. are connected to one another by the sprocket chain 26.
The mechanism associated with the rewind reel 23 is similar to that illustrated in my copending application, Serial No. 249,383 filed January 25, 1928. The roller 20 is mounted on a shaft 27 journaled in the bearing 28 at the upper end of an arm 29 extending from the housing 30. The shaft 27 has secured thereto the pulley 31 which is connected by the spring belt 32 with the pulley 33 on the shaft 34 extending into the housing 30. On the shaft 34 there is fixed a worm wheel 35. The worm wheel 35, see Fig. 3, meshes with the worm 36 fixed on the shaft 37 journaled at the bottom of the housing 30. On-the shaft 37 there is mounted the pulley 38 which is connected by the belt 39 with the pulley 40 secured to the shaft 41 of the motor 42. The shaft 34 has fixed thereto the pulley 43 which is connected by the spring belt 44 with the pulley 45 fixed on the shaft 46 of the rewind reel 23.
The idler 19 is journaled at the upper end of the lever 47, which lever 47 is pivotally connected at 48 to the arm 29. The lever 47 has an extension 49 on which a weight 50 is adjustably mounted to regulate the pressure exercised by the idler 19 on the/tape a when impinging the same against the roller 20.
The lever 22 is pivotally connected at 51 to the arm 52, extending from the arm 53. The lever 22 has secured thereto a cushion member 54 forming a brake shoe to cooperate with the brake drum 55 of the rewind reel 23. The arm 53 has secured at its end the bearing 56 in which the shaft 46 of the rewind reel is journaled.
From the foregoing it will be seen that as the ticker is operated and ejects the tape a, the same will be received by the idler 15 and roller 16, and as soon as it is so released or ejected the tape drawing roller 20, see Fig. 3, being constantly driven, will operate to draw the tape past the projecting position adjacent to the sprocket chain 26. As soon as the tape is actuated, the actuation of the roller 18 through contact with the moving tape a will simultaneously, through the sprocket chain 26, operate the roller 16 and tend to retard the movement of the tape before passing into the projecting position as compared to the movement of the same when being drawn from the projecting position by the roller 18. In this way the tape between the rollers 16 and 18 will always be maintained taut and smooth and at the same time be instrumental in effecting a vibration dissipating loop 57 between the ticker T and the roller 16. I
As soon as the ticker stops and the continued operation of the rollers 16 and 18 takes up the loop 57, sufficient tension will be exercised on the tape a to permit the roller 20 to slip relative to the tape a. At the same time the increased tension on the tape a will cause the lever 22 to be rocked to press the brake shoe 54 into engagement with the brake drum 55 and cause the rewind reel to be arrested. I
It is obvious that various changes and modifications may be made to the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
I claim:
l. The combination with a light aperture, of an intermittently discharging ticker tape, a tape pulling device for drawing the tape across said light aperture, a tape controlling device for controlling the tape as it passes across said light aperture, said tape controlling device comprising an initial gripping roller at the supply end of the light aperture and a second tape gripping roller at the discharge end of the light aperture, sprocket wheels connected to said gripping rollers, and a sprocket chain connecting said sprocket wheels, said tape pulling device pulling the tape from said second roller thereby through said sprocket chain to actuate said second roller to impart a drawing action on the portion of the tape located between the initial tape gripping roller and said second tape gripping roller.
2. The combination with a light aperture, of an intermittently discharging ticker tape, a tape pulling device for drawing the tape across said light aperture, and a tape controlling device for controlling the tape as it passes across said light aperture, said tape controlling device comprising an initial tape gripping roller at the supply end of the light aperture for receiving the intermittently discharged ticker tape and forming a vibration dissipating loop in advance of the light aperture, a second tape gripping roller at the discharge end of the light aperture, and means other than said tape for drivingly connecting said tape gripping rollers with one another, said tape pulling device pulling the tape from said second roller thereby to impart a driving action through said connecting means to said initial roller as well as to said second roller. 3. The combination with a light aperture, 0 an intermittently discharging ticker tape, a tape pulling device for drawing the tape across said light aperture, and a tape controlling device for controlling the tape as it passes across said light aperture, said tape controlling device comprising an initial tape gripping roller at the supply end of the light aperture for receiving the intermittently discharged ticker tape and forming a vibration dissipating loop in advance of the light aperture, a second tape gripping roller of greater diameter than said initial tape gripping roller, and means for drivingly connecting said tape gripping rollers with one another whereby said second tape gripping roller .will impart a faster rate of speed to said tape than the speed imparted to the tape by said initial' gripping roller thereby to take up any slack in the tape portion located at the light aperture, said tape pulling device drawing the tape from said second roller thereby to impart a driving action to said initial roller.
4. The combination with a light aperture, of an intermittently discharging ticker tape, a tape pulling device for drawing the tape across said light aperture, and a tape controlling device for controlling the tape as it passes across said light aperture, said tape controlling device comprising an initial tape gripping roller at the supply end of the light aperture for receiving the intermittently discharged ticker tape and forming a'vibration dissipating loop in advance of the light aperture, a second tape gripping roller of greater diameter than said initial tape gripping roller, sprocket wheels connected to said tape gripping rollers, and a sprocket chain connecting said sprocket wheels whereby said second tape gripping roller will impart a faster rate of speed to said tape than the speed transmitted to the tape by said initial gripping roller thereby to take up any slack in the tape portion located at the light aperture, said tape pulling device drawing the tape from said second roller thereby in turn to impart a driving action to said initial tape gripping roller.
5. The combination with a light aperture, of an intermittently discharging ticker tape, a tape pulling device for drawing the tape across said 5 light aperture, and a tape controlling device for controlling the tape as it passes across said light aperture, said tape controlling device comprising an initial tape gripping roller at the supply end of the light aperture for receiving the intermittent-1y discharged ticker tape, a second tape gripping roller at the discharge end of the light aperture, means for pressing the tape into gripping engagement with said gripping rollers, and means other than said tape for drivingly connecting said 135 tape gripping rollers with one another, said tape pulling device drawing the tape from said second tape gripping roller thereby to impart a driving action through said connecting means to said initial tape gripping roller as well as to said sec- 140 0nd tape gripping roller.
6. The combination with a light aperture, of an intermittently discharging ticker tape, a tape pulling device for drawing the tape across said 145 light aperture, and a tape controlling device for controlling the tape as it passes across said light aperture, said tape controlling device comprising an initial tape gripping roller at the supply end of the light aperture for receiving the intermit- 159 tently discharged ticker tape, a second tape gripping roller at the discharge end of the light aperture, idlers for pressing the tape into gripping engagement with said gripping rollers, and means other than said tape for drivingly connecting said tape gripping rollers with one another, said tape pulling device drawing the tape from said second tape gripping roller thereby to impart a driving action through said connecting means to said initial tape gripping roller as well as to said second tape gripping roller and being free to slip when the supply of tape to said gripping rollers comes to rest.
7. The combination with a light aperture, of a device for imparting tension on the portion of an intermittently discharging ticker tape located at said light aperture consisting in an initial tape gripping roller at the supply end of said light aperture, asecond tape gripping roller at the discharge end of said light aperture, the tape engaging periphery of said second tape gripping roller having a greater diameter than the diameter of the periphery of said initial tape gripping roller, and means for operatively connecting said rollers to rotate at the same angular velocity relative to one another so that said rollers will maintain the por'tionof the tape located at said light aperture smooth and under tension.
