POST CLAMP Filed Sept. 18, 19:55
finiiiiimin n ".i f "m Offo firziyfoff'era'emmvwm ATTORNEY Patented May 15, 1934 UITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 5 Claims.
This invention relates to post clamps especially adapted for securing fencing wire to metallic posts and has for the primary object the provision of a device of the above stated character which may be easily and quickly removed from a post and the wire and is capable of unlimited use regardless of the number of times it is applied and removed and when in use Will eifectively secure the wire to the post against slippage.
With these and other objects in view this invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a fragmentary side elevation partly in section illustrating a clamp constructed in accordance with my invention and showing the same applied to a post and securing to the latter a fence wire.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary front elevation illustrating the same.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a perspective view illustrating the clamp applied to a wire without application to the post.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral 1 indicates a metallic post of T-shape in cross section, as shown in Figure 3, providing a fence engaging face 2. Formed upon the face 2 are serrations or notches 3 to be engaged by a fence wire 4. To secure the wire to the post against slippage in a direction perpendicular to the post or laterally of the latter a clamp 5 is provided and consists of a substantially U-shaped member 6 adapted to extend about the post, as shown in Figure 3, and has one of its ends bent to form a hook '7 and its other end bent to form an eye 8. The hook 7 passes about the wire 4 at one side of the post and the eye 8 has pivoted thereto an arcuately curved lever 9 carrying at its free end a projection 10. The lever is swung to pass over the wire, as shown in Figure l, and into a position to engage the projection 10 with one of the serrations or notches of the post thereby effectively and detachably securing the wire to the post.
The lever 9 is constructed from a single length 01 resilient material which is bent upon itself to form an eye or loop 11 which extends through the eye 8 of the member 6. The material after forming the eye 11 is bent in arcuate shape and one end of the material is bent to form a hook 12 engaging about the other run of the material adjacent to the projection 10. Thus it will be seen that the arcuately curved portion of the lever is constructed from double material to give desired strength and flexibility thereto. The eye 11 is slightly offset from its formation to the arcuate shaped portion so as to engage the wire, as shown in Figure 1. The disengagement of the projection 10 from the post will permit swinging of the lever into a dotted line position, as shown in Figure 1, which detaches the wire from the post and also frees the clamp from the post whence said clamp may be disengaged from the Wire by disengaging the hooks 7 from the wire,
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it Will be understood that minor changes in construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be made Without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, as claimed.
Having described the invention, I claim:
1. A clamp comprising a U-shaped member to extend about a post and have one end secured to a wire engaging the post, and a lever carried by the other end of said member to engage over the wire and engage one face of the post. 7
2. A clamp comprising a U-shaped member to extend about a post and having one end bent to form a hook to engage a wire placed against the post and the other end thereof bent to form an eye, a lever pivoted to said eye and engageable over the wire and one face of the post.
3. A clamp comprising a U-shaped member to extend about a post and having one end bent to form a hook to engage a wire placed against the post and the other end thereof bent to form an eye, and an arcuately curved resilient lever pivoted to the eye and movable to engage over the wire and into engagement with one face of the post.
i. In combination with a post having a face thereof serrated and a wire engaging the serration, a U-shaped member engaging the wire at one end and passing about the post, and an arcuately curved lever pivoted to the other end of the member and swung to engage over the wire and brought into engagement with one of the serrations of the post.
5. In combination with a post having a face thereof serrated and a wire engaging the serration, a U-shaped member engaging the wire at one end and passing about the post, and an arcuately curved lever pivoted to said member and swung to engage the wire in a plane above said member, and a projection on the end of the lever to engage a serration of the post.
