12 Claims.
This invention relates, as indicated, to a bed and cylinder type printing press, but has reference more specifically to an improvement in the sheet feeding means shown and described in Patent No. 1,774,272, granted to me August 26, 1930.
The primary object of the invention is to provide means for effectively securing the sheet in properly gauged position on the sheet feeding table during the return movement of the cylinder so as to prevent the sheet from being disturbed by air currents occasioned by the movement of the cylinder.
Another object of the invention is to provide suction means for thus securing the sheet, and
means for applying suction thereto in timed relation to the movement of the cylinder. To
the accomplishment of the foregoing and related ends, said invention, then, consists of the means hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The annexed drawings and the following description set forth in detail certain mechanism embodying the invention, such disclosed means constituting, however, but one of various mechanical forms in which the principle of the invention may be used.
In said annexed drawings:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of the sheet feeding table, cylinder, and movable register table; Fig. .2 is a side elevation of the press, showing the register table operating mechanism; Fig. 3 is a portion of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a view showing the end of the cylinder opposite that shown in Fig. 3, and the side gauge operating mechanism; and Fig. 5 is an elevation of the feeding end of the press.
1n accordance with the invention, there is provided a slotted feed table 1, on which sheets to be printed are moved into registering position with front gauges 2 by means of endless tapes 3 and 4, the sheets in this position being also side gauged by gauge 5. The sheets are shown in registered position in Fig. 1.
Disposed between the tapes 4, and having its upper surface substantially flush with the upper runs of these tapes is a movable register table comprising a body portion 6 and a suction head 7, the head 7 being normally maintained in a position spaced slightly forward of the body 6 by means of a spring 8, which permits the suction head to be moved rearwardly without moving the body of the table when the head strikes an obstruction, as will be presently described. The suction head 7 is provided with a double row of perforations 9, which are in communication with a tube 10, connected to a suitable valve controlled vacuum line (not shown) whereby suction may be produced at the perforations 9 in synchronism with the movement of other parts to be described.
With the sheet in registered position, as de- (Cl. lOl-279) scribed, suction is automatically applied through the tube 10, and the sheet is thus effectively secured to the register table by virtue of the suction applied to the sheet above the perforations 9 in the vsuction head 7. With the suction thus applied, the front gauges 2 are automatically depressed and the side gauge 5 automatically moved to clear the sheet.
The register table, with the sheet secured thereto, is then moved forwardly, this movement coinciding with the reverse movement of the cylinder 11, having sheet gripping fingers 12 and a stop 13. The movement of the table is controlled by a cam 14 secured to the drive shaft 15 of the press, this cam operating against a lever 16. The lever 16, through a series of links and levers, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, imparts movement to a lever 17, which in turn moves link 18 which is pivotally secured to the feed table. The opposite end of the link 18 is pivotally secured to a link 19, which, in turn, is pivotally secured to the body 6 of the movable register table.
In the reverse movement of the cylinder 11, the stop 13 thereof strikes the suction head 7, but the spring 3 permits the head to move rearwardly a slight amount to thus absorb the shock to which the entire register table would otherwise be subjected. The position of the suction head 7 at the instant it strikes the stop 13 is shown at A in Fig. 1.
At this point, the gripping fingers 12 of the cylinder 11 close to grip the sheet and the suction in the head 7 is simultaneously broken, thereby freeing the sheet from its suction engagement with the register table.
As the cylinder 11 rotates in the opposite direction, the register table is moved rearwardly to its initial position, as shown in Fig. 1, and in this position, the front gauges 2 are automatically elevated and the side gauge 5 moved to gauge the side of the next sheet, which has, in the meantime, moved forwardly on the feed table.
As shown in Fig. 1, a nut 20 is provided for the purpose of adjusting the stroke of the register table, to accommodate the register table to diierences in the throw of the cylinder 11 at different speeds.
The side gauge 5 is mounted on a bar 21, which is journalled in bearings 22 secured to the table 1. The position of the side gauge may be adjusted by a lever 23. The bar 21 has secured to one end thereof a button 24, and a spring 25 mounted on the bar between this button and the bearing 22 adjacent thereto normally forces the bar outwardly to a position in which the gauge 5 is clear of engagement with the sheet to be gauged.
For the purpose of forcing the bar 21 inwardly to gauging position in synchronism with the movement of the cylinder 11, the mechanism shown in Fig. 5 is employed. This mechanism includes a crank 26 secured to the drive shaft of the cylinder 11, and adapted by a series of levers 27, 28 and 29, to reciprocate a cam bar 30. The cam bar 30 has a cam surface 31, which is adapted to move a lever 32 outwardly. The lever 32 is pinned to a rock shaft 33, to which a lever 34 is also pinned. It will be obvious that upon reciprocation of the cam bar 30, the lever 34 will at timed intervals push the button 24 inwardly, thereby moving the gauge 5 to sheet gauging position.
Other modes of applying the principle of my invention may be employed instead of the one explained, change being made as regards the mechanism herein disclosed, provided the means stated by any of the following claims or the equivalent of such stated means be employed.
I therefore particularly point out and distinctly claim as my invention:
1. The combination with a printing couple comprising a reciprocable bed for carrying the form and a cylinder for carrying the sheet to be printed; of a stationary feed table arranged tangential to the cylinder and provided with sheet registering means, a movable register table for moving the sheet from registered position to engagement with the cylinder and suction means for holding the sheet in engagement with said table during such movement.
2. The combination with a printing couple comprising a reciprocable bed for carrying the form and a cylinder for carrying the sheet to be printed; of a stationary feed table arranged tangential to the cylinder and provided with sheet registering means, a register table for moving the sheet from registered position to engagement with the cylinder, suction means for holding the sheet in engagement with said table during such movement, and means for breaking said suction at the end of said movement.
3. The combination with a printing couple comprising a reciprocable bed for carrying the form and a cylinder for carrying the sheet to be printed; of a register table for moving the sheet from registered position to engagement with the cylinder, said table comprising a body portion, a suction head secured thereto, and a spring interposed between said body and head.
4. The combination with a printing couple comprising a reciprocable bed for carrying the form and a cylinder for carrying the sheet to be printed; of a stationary feed table inclined towards the bottom of the cylinder and provided with sheet registering means, a register table for moving the sheet from registered position to engagement with the cylinder, and means for moving said table in synchronism with the movement of said cylinder.
5. The combination with a printing couple comprising a reciprocable bed for carrying the form and a cylinder for carrying the sheet to be printed; of a stationary feed table inclined towards the bottom of the cylinder and provided with sheet registering means, a register table for moving the sheet from registered position to engagement with the cylinder, means for moving said table in synchronism with the movement of said cylinder, and means for maintaining a suction against the sheet of paper during said movement.
6. The combination with a printing couple comprising a reciprocable bed for carrying the form and a cylinder for carrying the sheet to be printed; of a stationary feed table inclined towards the bottom of the cylinder and provided with gauges for positioning said sheet, means for feeding said sheet into position to be gauged, means for moving said gauges to clear the sheet, and means for thereafter moving the sheet under the influence of suction to a position wherein it may be gripped by said cylinder.
'7 The combination with a printing couple comprising a reciprocable bed for carrying the form and a cylinder for carrying the sheet to be printed; of means for feeding the sheet to the cylinder comprising a stationary feed table having a slot therein, endless conveyor tapes disposed in said slot, and a movable register table disposed between said tapes and having its upper surface substantially flush with said feed table.
8. The combination with a printing couple comprising a reciprocable bed for carrying the form and a cylinder for carrying the sheet to be printed; of means for feeding the sheet to the cylinder comprising a stationary feed table inclined towards the bottom of the cylinder and 10C having a slot therein, endless conveyor tapes disposed in said slot, and a movable register table disposed between said tapes, said table comprising a body portion and a suction head movably secured to said body portion.
9. The combination with a printing couple comprising a reciprocable bed for carrying the form and a cylinder for carrying the sheet to be printed; of means for feeding the sheet to the cylinder comprising a stationary feed table arranged tangential to the cylinder and slotted intermediate its sides, endless conveyor tapes disposed in the slot, and a movable register table disposed between said tapes, said table comprising a body portion and a suction head movably 115 secured to said body portion, and a spring opposing movement between said body and head.
10. The combination with a printing couple comprising a reciprocable bed for carrying the form and a cylinder for carrying the sheet to be printed; of means for feeding the sheet to the cylinder comprising a stationary slotted feed table inclined towards the bottom of the cylinder and a movable register table adapted to be moved in the slot of said feed table.
11. The combination with a printing couple comprising a reciprocable bed for carrying the form and a cylinder for carrying the sheet to be printed; of means for feeding the sheet to the cylinder comprising a stationary slotted feed 13@ table arranged tangential to the cylinder and a movable register table mounted for reciprocal movement in said slot, said register table comprising a body portion and a suction head movably secured to said body portion.
12. The combination with a printing couple comprising a reciprocable bed for carrying the form and a cylinder for carrying the sheet to be printed; of means for feeding the sheet to the cylinder comprising a stationary slotted feed table inclined towards the bottom of the cylinder, and a movable register table mounted for reciprocal movement in said slot, said register table comprising a body portion and a suction head movably secured to said body portion, and spring 145 means opposing movement between said body and head.
