5 Claims.
This invention relates to devices for producing a rumbling noise from drums, and the like, and more particularly to rumble tips for drum sticks. The rumble tip now in common use to produce 5 a rumbling noise from drums, tom-toms, and the like, is well known in the art, and comprises a circular disk or washer which is made of soft rubber and, being of uniform thickness, cannot be applied to drum sticks of various sizes Without 10 distortion of the rumb1e up rim, suon distortion impairing the effectiveness of the tip when applied to a drum head in the well known manner. It is therefore important in this art to provide a rumble tip that will not warp or distort, and
which can be readily applied to drum sticks of various sizes or thicknesses.
The particular object of my invention is to provide an improved and highly effective rumble tip for drum sticks, and the like, for use in combination with bass-drums, snare-drums, tomtoms, and the like.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved rumble tip which is provided with a rim which is greater in width than the thickness of the web portion thereof.
A third object of the invention is to provide an improved soft rubber rumble tip of the character described which is provided with a relatively wide rim and an annular groove formed circumferentially in said rim.
Yet another object of the invention is to provide a rumble tip of the character described which is provided with a circumferential groove ,1 in its outer periphery with circumferential ridges on opposite sides of said groove.
Another object is to provide a soft rubber rumble tip of the character described which is annular and provided with a rim which is greater in Width than the thickness of the web portion thereof, and which is provided with a relatively lengthy hub portion.
Other and more specific objects of the invention are mentioned and described herein.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure l is a side view of a drum stick showing my improved rumble tip applied thereto;
Figure 2 is a side View of the rumble tip alone;
Figure 3 is a section taken on line 3 3 of Fig. 2; and
Figure 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3, but not in section.
Similar numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout the several Views on the drawmg.
Referring now to the details of the drawing the numeral 1 indicates a conventional type of drum stick which may be used in combination with snare-drums, and upon which my improved rumble tip 2 is removably and adjustably mounted. As is well known in the art, rumble tips are preferably made of soft rubber, which promotes the bouncing action thereof when applied to a drum head to effect the rumbling noise, and my improved rumble tip is therefore preferably made of a good quality of soft rubber. It is also Well known that drum sticks are made of various sizes and thicknesses, and that the conventional type of rumble tip of a given size is not applicable to all sizes of drum sticks without material distortion of the rumble tip rim.
It is also well known that the effectiveness of the rumble tip is materially impaired when the rim thereof is distorted or warped to any material extent, and that is what occurs when the attempt is made to apply one to drum sticks of various sizes. This defect in the common type of rumble tip is wholly met and overcome by my improved rumble tip, for it may be applied to drum sticks of various sizes and thicknesses without impairing its emciency in any degree.
The numeral 2 indicates generally my improved disk-like rumble tip which is preferably annular in formation and may comprise the hub section 3, provided with the central bore 4; the annular radial web section 5 surrounding the hub 3; and the annular rim section 6 integral with the web section 5, said rim section being greater in width than the thickness of the web section. The rim section 6 is provided with the circumferential groove 'l which may be formed between the two opposed ridges 8 and 9. The bore 4 of the rumble tip hub which is substantially longer than the thickness of the web section 5 receives the body of the stick 1 snugly therein and must adhere thereto tenaciously in order that the tip may function most effectively when applied to a drum head. The rumble tip hub 3 is therefore materially lengthened relative to the thickness of the web section 5 to enhance the area of the hub bore 4. 'I'he construction of my rumble tip, as herein described, which consists of making the rim 6 wider than the thickness of the web section 5 enables the production of an article that can readily be applied to drum sticks of various sizes and thicknesses without impairing its eiiectiveness to any degree.
When the operator, or drummer, desires to pro- CTI duce a rumbling sound from the drum, the element 2 is drawn, dragged, or pushed along the surface of the drum head Which causes the element 2 to bounce slightly, and when this is done rapidly the rumbling sound results therefrom.
I claim:
1. Drum stick attachment comprising an annular resilient centrally apertured body provided with rim and web sections, said rim being circumferentially grooved and greater in width than the thickness of the Web section thereof.
2. Drum stick attachment comprising an annular resilient centrally apertured disk-like body provided with rim and web sections, said rim being circumferentially grooved providing adjacent ridges and greater in Width than the thickness of the web section thereof.
3. Drum stick attachment comprising an annular resilient centrally apertured body provided with rim, web, and hub sections, said rim being greater in Width than the thickness of the web section and said hub section being substantially longer than the thickness of said web section.
4. In combination, a drum stick, and a resilient apertured member removably mounted upon said stick, said resilient member being provided with rim and hub sections, said hub section being substantially longer than the thickness of the body of said resilient member.
5. In combination, a drum stick, and a resilient annular apertured member removably mounted upon said stick and slidable longitudinally thereof, said resilient member being provided with rim, web and hub sections, said rim being greater in Width than the thickness of the web section, and said hub section projecting laterally from said Web section.
