WINDOW VENTILATOR Filed July 13, 1931 INVENTOR I Len [s 0. Stan/02m BY b ATTORNEYS Patented Mar. 27, 1934 PATENT OFFICE WINDOW VENTILATOR I 1 Lewis 0. Stewart, Detroit,'Mich. Application July 13, 1931, Serial No. 550,486
7 Claims.
The present invention pertains to a novel ventilatorof the adjustabletype adapted to be inserted'in windows and the like.
The primary object of the present invention is to' providea ventilator formed ofa plurality of panels that slide lengthwise relative to each other in a manner-whereby the ventilator may be adjustedin length to accommodate itself to windows of varying Widths. Each of the plurality of panels are=identical in construction and size Lwhich avoids the expense of a machine set up to stamp the: parts ofdifierent sizes so that one member'may slide within another as is necessary in telescoping ventilators. The panels are formed with series of overlapping :bafiles or louvers whichsdirect the-flow of air through the baffles in an upward. direction and which prevent the. entrance of rainor snow, it being noticed that the crosssectional area of the air passages is only 'very slightly. less than the entire area of the plurality of panels either in a compact or. ex" tended. position. e
Another'object of the present invention is to providea window ventilator that is constructed or a plurality of identically formed panels, each panel being provided with a"series of baflies or louversand the plurality of panels being secured together in a manner permitting lengthwise slidingmovement relative-to each other by readily detachable clips'that engagethe baflles or louvers.
With the above and other ends in view the invention consistsin matters hereinafter set forth and more particularly pointed out in the ape pended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of the present window ventilator;
Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view taken substantially along the line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a transverse cross sectional view through one of the bafiles;
' throughout to designate corresponding parts.
iThe present ventilator comprises a pair of identical panels, each panel being formed with a rectangular marginal frame 1. To the frame 1 is secured a plurality of baliies 2 which are bent throughout their entire length in. the manner illustrated in Fig. 3. On the ends of each baflle are formed loops 3 adjacent the upper and lower edges .of the baiiies, the upper edge of the upper loop and the lower edge of the lower loop being 60 cut on a bias as at 4. The loops 3 receive the wire 1 when the baiiies are assembled and as illustrated in Fig. 1 the loops of one baffle rest against the loops of the next adjacent bafile and as a result of the loops being cut on a bias as described, 65 the edge of any baffle overlaps the upper edge of the baflie arranged beneath a distance corresponding to the depth of the bias, this feature serving to prevent air from passing directly through the ventilator.
v13y arranging the bafiies as described with the loops butting against each other, each baflle supports the next adjacent baffle in its proper position while the uppermost baffles and the lowermost baffles have their longitudinal edges bent around the adjacent portions of the wire frame 1 in the manner illustrated at 5.
To provide an adjustable window ventilator two or more of such panels are slidably secured together and for this purpose the present invention provides clips that engage the baflles in a manner to permit longitudinal sliding movement of the entire panels. In Fig. 4 such a clip is illustrated, this clip being formed of three separate parts that are sprung together, one of the parts being illustrated in Fig. 6 and which comprises a body having a vertically extending portion 6 with a horizontal portion '7 extending outwardly on one side from the top thereof and a horizontally extending portion 8 extending outwardly on the opposite side from the bottom thereof. Inclined members 9 are struck upwardly from the ends of the members 7 and 8 to extend alongside the body 6 in spaced relation thereto.
In Fig. is illustrated the member that snaps on the above described body, there being one provided to snap on the members 9 on both portions 7 and 8, and this last mentioned member comprises a body 10 having springlike fingers 11 struck up on each end thereof, each spring finger being slightly hooked as at 12. A wall 13 extends outwardly adjacent the fingers on one side of the body and a flange 14 extends outwardly on the opposite side of the body 10 and spaced from the edges of the fingers 11.
In assembling two panels together by means of the present clip the body 6 is placed on the bafiies of two panels that are placed side by side so that the upper edge of the bafiie 15 engages the portion 7 while the flat portion of the bafile engages the side of the body 6. The bottom edge of the adjacent baffle 16 on the opposite panel engages the portion 8 and the flat side of the baffle lies against the opposite side of the body 6. The member 10 is then pushed downwardly on the clips 9 on the portion 8 so that the flange 14 extends outside the bafiie 17, the upper edge of which engages the body 10 when the hooked portions 12 have secured the body 10 to the body 6. Another body 10 is forced upwardly onto the members 9 on the portion 7 so that the flange 14 extends outside the bafiie 18 and by repeating this assembly adjacent each corner of the panels the latter are secured together in sliding relation.
In order to prevent the clips from sliding relative to the panels the baffles adjacent the clips, as illustrated in Fig. 1 may have prongs struck inwardly therefrom by cutting a portion of the bafiles as at 19.
In Fig. 7 is illustrated a modified form of clip which is formed of a single piece of metal having flanges 14' that engage baiiies l7 and 18, and re- .cesses or pockets 20 and 21 that receive the baffles 16 and 15 respectively.
Although specific embodiments of the present invention have been illustrated and described it is to be understood that various changes may be made within the scope of the appended claims 36" without departing from the spirit of the invention, and such changes are contemplated.
