This invention relates to furnace grates of that type which the fuel is supported on a plurality of rocking or oscillating grate sections adapted to rock simultaneously in the same direction, and has for its object to provide, a structure of the class referred to with depending lugs on the grate sections coupled together by a connecting bar to cause the simultaneous rocking of the sections when one of the latter is shifted and one of the grate sections having a depending lug, independent of the other lugs for connection to a reciprocatory Shaker bar to overcome the providing of the latter with a bend and to obtain a wide dumping action.
A further Object of the invention is to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a grate structure including an annulus formed of a plu` rality of detachably connected sections provided with means in its top edge for removably supporting the pivots of grate sections.
A further object of the invention is to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a grate structure including a removably mounted annulus formed of a plurality of detachably connected sections for supporting the grate sections, and with the annulus including circumferentially disposed spaced teeth capable of being knocked off to provide for the fitting of the annulus around obstacles when the grate structure is positioned within a boiler.
A further object of the invention is to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a grate structure including a sectional annulus provided with depending lugs for catching in old grate hangers on the base of boiler to maintain the annulus in position.
Further objects of the invention are to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a grate structure which is comparatively simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable, compact, readily repaired when occasion requires, capable for burning any size of fuel, thoroughly eflicient in use, conveniently installed, decreasing the cost of maintenance especially in connection with repairs, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
To the above ends essentially and others which may hereinafter appear, the invention consists of such parts, and such combination of parts which fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.

Referring to the drawings, 1 generally indicates the 'oase of a boiler of the upright type, 2 the rebox, 3 the ash pit, 4 an opening for the passage of a shaker bar 5, 6 a support extending laterally from base 1, 7 an operating lever for bar 5 which is pivotally connected to the latter and to support 6, 8 an angularly disposed handle of circular cross section for lever 7 and 9 apertured lugs on the inner face of base 1 below the fireboX and from which the grate structure is supported. The base l is illustrated by Way of example for the purpose of showing the adaptation of a grate structure, in accordance with this invention with respect to the firebox 2 and ash pit 3. v
The grate structure includes a plurality of in dependent, opposed grate sections, and these latter in the example shown when set up in active position provides a circular grate body. 'The number of grate sections illustrated are four, but the number can be increased or diminished. The grate sections shown are designated 10, 11, 12 and 13, the sections 10 and 13 are the outer sections, are of like form and oppositely disposed with respect to each other. The sections l1 and 12 are the inner sections, are substantially of like form and oppositely disposed with respect to each other. The sections l0 and 13 are of segmental contour in plan. The sections 11 and 12 have curved ends and are of greater length than sections 10 and 13. Each section includes a body part 14 which gradually decreases in height from its transverse median towards each end and is of segmental cross section. The upper face of each section being ilat. Each end of each section at the longitudinal median of the latter is provided with a trunnion 15 of circular cross section. Each section has the body part thereof at each side provided with a set of spaced tines 16. Each tine 16 is of less height than the body part and gradually decreases in thickness from its upper to its lower edge. The upper edges of the tines 16 are flush with the upper faces of body parts. The ends of each set of tines 16 are flush with each other. The body part of each section between the transverse median and one end has a Wide portion 17. The wide portion 17 of the body part of each section 11 and 12 is formed at each side with a pair of short tines 18 and the inner side of the Wide portion of each section 10 and 13 is formed with a pair of short tines 19. One side of sections 10 and 13 and both sides of sections 11, 12 between the wide portion 17 and the adjacent end of said sections have spaced tines 20. The section 12 between the wide portion 17 of the body part thereo and the adjacent end of the latter, has its body part formed with a wide portion 21 formed with short tines 22, and between the latter and said end such body part is provided with tines 23. The tines 18, 19, 20, 22 and 23 have their top edges iiush with the upper face of the body part and each of said tines gradually decrease in thickness from its upper to its bottom edge.
The grate structure further includes an annu.- lus or ring 24 formed of a pair of sections 25, 26 detachably connected together. The outer diameter of the annulus 24 increases from its bottom to its top edge. Each end of each section of the annulus is cutaway to form a reduced extension. The extension at one end of a section is flush with the top edge of the latter and the one at the other end of the section is flush with the bottom edge of the latter, and by this arrangement each section has an upper extension 27 and a lower extension 28. The upper eXtension of one section seats upon the lower extension of the other section. The upper and lower extensions have countersinks 29, 30 respectively. The upper extension of one section is detachably connected to the lower extension of the other section by a bolt 31 having its head countersunk in said lower extension and a nut 32 engaging the upper end of the bolt and seated in the countersink of said upper extension. The annulus 24 is provided in its top edges with a plurality of spaced pairs of spaced grooves 34. The grooves of each pair align with each other. The trunnions of each grate section are mounted in a pair of aligning grooves. The grooves are open at each end. The outer face of annulus 24 is formed with outwardly projecting bosses 35 of the same contour and align with the walls of the grooves. Between the grooves the outer face of the annulus 24 is provided with circumferentially arranged laterally extending knock off teeth 36 of a height less than the height of and ilush with the upper face of the annulus. Depending from the bottom of the annulus are spaced tapered lugs 37. The teeth are capable of being knocked off to provide for the fitting of the annulus around obstacles. The lugs are capable of engaging in the lugs 9 when the annulus is mounted in position.
Formed integral with and depending from the wide portion 17 of each body part is the upper section 38 of a coupling lug 39. The lower section of lug 39 is of angle form and includesa tapered vertical part 40 and a horizontally disposed part 41 integral with one side of part 40 at the lower end of the latter, The part 41 is disposed at right angles to part 40, is of a circular cross section and provided with a diametrically extending opening 42. The part 40 is of greater length than part 41 and at its upper portion has one side thereof mortised as at 43 to receive a reduced tapered part 44 of the section 38. The sections of lug 39 are detachably connected together by a holdfast means 45.
Formed integral with and depending from the wide portion 21 or the body part of grate section 12 is an angle shaped coupling lug 46 of the same form as but oppositely disposed with respect to the lugs 39.
Mounted on the parts 41 of the coupling lugs 39 is a coupling bar or link 47 which is retained in position by cotter pins 48 extending through openings 42. Mounted on the angularly disposed part 49 of the lug 46 and retained on such part by a cotter pin 50 is an elbow shaped arm 51 to which the shaker bar or rod 5 is attached as at 52. The sections of lug 46 are secured together by the holdfast means 53.
What claim isz- En a dumping grate, a horizontally disposed set of tiltable sections, said set including a pair or" outer and a pair of inner sections, each of said sections including a casting provided with trunnions centrally oi" its ends, each casting being formed in each side thereof with a series of spaced parallel oblong cutouts extending from a point adjacent one side of the longitudinal median of the casting to a side edge of the latter, the cutonts in one side endwise aligning with the cutouts in the other side of the casting, each series or cutouts providing a series or laterally extending opposed oblong tines, the side walls of each cutout inclining towards each end from the bottom to the top of the casting, a pair of endwise aligning cutouts of each of the inner sections of the set being of less depth than the other cutouts of the section, one of the cutouts on the inner side of each of the outer sections ci the set being of less depth than the other cutouts on said sides, the outouts of smallest depth providing said sections with horizontally aligning wide portions, a lug depending from the lower face of the wide portion of each section for connection to a common coupler for said sections, another pair of endwise aligning cutouts of one or the inner sections being of the same depth as and remote from the said other pair of endwise aligning cutouts of such section and providing the latter with a second wide portion, and a lug depending from the lower face of the second wide portion and adapted to be coupled to a reciprocatory element.
