UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SEBASTIAN A. FITHIAN AND ISAAC N. FITHIAN, OF KARNS CITY, PA.
IMPROVEMENT IN DEVICES FOR LOWERING FLUIDS INTO OIL-WELLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 194,667, dated August 28, 1877; application filed February 17, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, SEBASTIAN ALONZO FITHIAN and Isaac NEWTON FITHIAN, 0t Karns City, in the county of Butler and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Device for Lowering Fluids into Oil-Wells, of which the following isa specication:
The figure is a side view of our improved device, partly in section, to show the construction.
The especial object of this invention is to furnish an improved device for lowering fluids into the bottom of oil-wells to cleanse them from obstructions, open the crevices, soften the paraffine so that it can be pumped out, 8m, and which shall be simple in construction, convenient in use, and effective in operation.
The invention consists in the combination of the barrel provided with the bail, the bot-' tom at alittle distance above its lower end, and the perforations in its sides below. said bottom, the single or double valve, the springcatch, and the closely-fitting cover, as hereinafter fully described. I
A is a barrel or case, which may be of any desired length, and of such size that it may be easily passed down and up the bore of the well. To the upper end of the barrel A is attached a bail, B, for convenience in lowering it into and raising it from the well.
0 is a bottom, which is placed at a little distance above the lower end of the barrel A. In the bottom 0 is formed a hole, which is closed with a valve, D, the stem E of which projects below the lower end of the barrel A, and has a disk or valve, F, attached to it.
When the valve D is open the valve F rests against and closes the lower end of the said barrel A, so that the fluid contained in the barrel A will be forced out through the holes a formed in the sides of said barrel below the bottom 0, and will thus be forced against and clean the sides of the well.
Gr is a spring attached to the side of the lower end of the barrel A, to catch upon the valve F and hold it closed and the valve 1]) open, so that the barrel A can be raised and lowered while the fluid contained in said barrel is being forced out through the holes a to thoroughly clean the sides of the well. The upper end of the barrel A is provided with a closely-fitting cover, H, secured in place by hooks and eyes or other convenient fasteners. The valve D is opened and the valve F closed by the lower end of the stem E striking against the bottom of the well.
If desired, the device may be made with a single closely-fitting valve-orjoint at its lower end, in place of the double valve.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of the barrel A, provided with the bail B, the bottom 0, at a little distance above its lower end, and the perforations a in its sides, below said bottom, the single or double valve D E F, the springcatch G, and the closely-fitting cover H, substantially as herein shown and described.
