Patented Feb. 6, 1934 FlCE MEAN S FUR CARRYING REE i JS OF PAPER IN PRENTENG AND OTHER IvIACHllNES .lohn Shaw, Leeds, England Application June 11, 1932, Serial No. 616,693, and in Great Britain July 31, 1931 3 Claims. 7 (c1. 2422-72) This invention relates to means for carrying reels of paper in printing and other machines.
In printing and paper working machines fitted with spindleless reel devices reel cones are usually employed to carry reels of paper mounted on strawboard centres or the like. In such devices the paper reels are mounted on cones which are provided with flutings or ribs, and the cones forced into the strawboard centres. One end of the paper reel is supported on a freely running cone, while the other is mounted upon a cone to which a braking attachment is fitted.
According to the invention a support is provided which may advantageously take a cylindrical form and in which radial or other recesses are provided and adapted for the reception or" a number or" radially disposed wedge blocks which are thrust outward by means of an axially movable nut, so that thus the support for the wedges may be freely inserted within the bore of the reel, whereby on the nut being operated the wedge blocks are caused to move outwardly to grip on the reel centre.
It will be understood that the invention is applicable in the replacement of the cones at either or both ends, that is to say it is either applicable to the freely running support for the reel or the support upon which a brake pulley is usually mounted. By such means it will be understood that reel slip in relation to the brake drum is eliminated, reels having different sizes of reel centres are accommod tedand less stress is applied than that which is necessary with the fluted or ribbed cones, seeing that the axial stresses are eliminated and the grip is effected on the outward movement of the wedge blocks. Furthermore the end of the reel is more exactly locate The invention comprises the construction hereinafter described.
The apparatus according to the invention is diagrammatically illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawing.
Figure 1 is a front sectional elevation of a reel support, and
Figure 2 is a sectional side elevation on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
In carrying the invention into effect the reel carrying devices are provided so that one can be freely running and the other braked as usual.
The tubular spindle a passes through the reel frame C and on its inner end is advantageously provided with an outwardly extending flange a ball bearings b being advantageously provided on the spindle immediately behind the flange and located in position by means of a thrust collar d, a further set of ball bearings 0 being advantageously located near the outer edge of the reel frame. The outwardly extending flange a terminates in a reduced concentric part or support a advantageously cylindrical in form and provided with a number of radial slots conveniently set equi-distant and adapted for the reception of blocks 2' of a wedge shape, the lower faces of which are inclined and adapted to contact with correspending faces in a cylindrically shaped axially movable nut g. In the reduced concentric part or support a or" the outwardly extending flange 11 a cavity is formed for the reception of the nut g. A rod 1 passes centrally through the tubular spindle a one end of which is screwthreaded to engage in the correspondingly internally screw-threaded bore of the nut g, a hand wheel 72 being provided at the opposite end of the rod f on the outside of the reel frame, whereby on the rotation of the hand wheel the nut g is axially moved and bears against the underside of the blocks thrusting them radially outward.
In order to maintain the wedge blocks in position a split ring 7' of a flat section is mounted conveniently in a central position upon the reduced part a of the cone spindle a serving as a support for the wedge blocks 2, and being adapted for reception within a peripheral annular groove of a corresponding cross-section provided therein. Each of the wedge blocks is provided on its upper surface with a slot in which the split ring 9' is accommodated the slot being of such depth as to permit of the wedge blocks being moved radially outward on the axial movement of the nut g. A cylindrical cavity is provided in each of the wedge blocks 2' beneath the split ring 7' for the reception of a helical spring 7c, the upper end of which engages beneath the split ring y, and thus tends to maintain the wedge blocks upon the respective inclined surfaces of the nut 9. An axial slot provided near the outer end of the nut g serves by means of a transversely disposed pin Z to prevent the nut being wound off the screw-threaded end of the rod 1 on the rotation of the hand wheel h, it being understood that the inclined faces provided on the nut prevent the rotation of the nut.
A brake pulley m may be mounted upon the tubular spindle a in a position adjacent the hand wheel h and at the end of the tubular spindle opposite to that upon which the flange and supporting part of the wedge blocks are provided.
It will be understood that in use the reduced concentric part or support a of the outwardly extending flange a supporting the wedge blocks 2' is provided of a diameter such that it may be readily passed into the bore of the reel centre to the extent permitted by the adjacent flange a The grip of the reel centre is then obtained by turningthe hand wheel h and thKSCIBW- threaded rod f upon which thehand wheel is mounted, whereby the axially movable nut g is actuated to thrust outwards the wedge blocks which grip within the reel centre to hold thee reel securely, thus providing ,means by which if required braking can be applied;
I claim:
