This invention relates to a portable attachment for a conventional tool grinder such as may be conveniently defined as a drill vise. Stated in more explicit terms, I have evolved and produced a drill vice in the nature of an attachment for an existing type of tool holder constituting a stock part of a conventional hand-operated mechanical disk grinder.
The type of grinder referred to is now commonly employed on farms and the like to aid in the sharpening of the pointed end of spiral or twisted drill bit. At the present time, the gear casing is provided with a substantially L-shaped 15: adjustable tool rest, and I have taken advantage of this feature by adapting the attachment for detachable connection with said tool rest, the attachment being expressly designed to stabilize and retain the drill bit in a predetermined angu- 207 lar position with respect to the periphery of the grinding disc to insure accurate and satisfactory results.
Having adapted and used the subject matter of this invention, I submit that it is an innovation in this particular line of endeavor, and is of such ingenious type and dependable character as to render it substantially indispensible as a positive clamping and holding means for a drill bit of the variety mentioned.
Other features and advantages will become more readily apparent from the following description and drawings.

Figure 1 is an elevational view of a conventional rotary disc tool grinding machine of the 'type specified with the drill retention clamp or vise in its usable position.
Figure 2 is a top plan View of the assembly illustrated in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a detail elevational view of the attachment per se.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the manually regulated adjustable tool clamping unit.
In order that the invention may be readily distinguished from the conventional parts, I will describe first the conventional grinding machine shown in the drawings, particularly in Figures 1 and 2. In Figure 1, the numeral 5 designates the customary gear housing or casing whose gearing is actuated through the instrumentality the gearing in proper spaced parallel relationship as depicted in Figure 2. The gear casing is provided at a predetermined point with a marginal lug or ear to which'the L-shaped tool rest or bracket 11 is connected by way of an appropriate fastening 12. All of these parts are conventional and the attachment or vise which is generally indicated by the numeral 13 is attachable to the existing L-shaped tool rest 11. The idea is to provide an attachment which may be applied to the part 11 without requiring any alterations in the existing or stock parts. Hence the invention may be purchased as a complete article and applied to the conventional type grinding machine to hold the drill bit or tool means properly in place with respect to the periphery or rim of the grinding wheel.
The vise attachment comprises two principal units, the primary one of which may be designated as an adapter. This adapter comprises a horizontally disposed base plate 15 of appropriate shape and dimension having a fixed upstanding alouttment flange 16 at one end. The flange 16 is disposed at a definite or predetermined angle With respect to the periphery of the grinding wheel 9 as illustrated in Figure 2. Thus the plate 15 and the flange 16 provide a support to stabilize and hold the drill bit 14 in proper place. The adapter is provided with a substantially U- shaped attaching clip 17 having a set screw 18 by means of which said clip may be detachably fastened to the horizontal arm of the L-shaped tool rest 11 as shown in Figure 3 (dotted lines).
At one end the plate 15 is provided with an upstanding screw-threaded stud l9 equipped with a thumb nut 20 to hold the slidable clamping unit securely in adjusted position. The clamping unit comprises a slotted plate 21 which is superimposed upon the base plate 15, said plate 21 having a slot 22 engaging the stud 19 and a guide pin 23 carried by the base plate.
At its inner end, the slidable clamping plate is provided with an oblique clamping or tool retention flange 24 which when in clamping position is substantially parallel to the flxed abutment flange 18. At the opposite end is a similar upstanding flange 25 which may be utilized as a finger grip for convenient adjustment of said clamping unit.
A clear exposition of the merit and novelty of the vise attachment is depicted in the drawings, from which it will be observed that novelty is predicated upon the combination of the detachable tool supporting and stabilizing vise with the existing L-shaped tool support 11 constituting a its stock part of the conventional grinding machine. In particular, specific novelty is based upon the adapter unit embodying the horizontal base plate 15 having the inclined flange 16 and the U-shaped clamp 1'7 whereby to permit said adapter to be securely yet detachably secured to the L-shaped bracket 11 without requiring any alterations of the existing features thereof. Thus the adapter becomes actually a part of the machine in that it is adjustable with said bracket 11 in a vertical as well as a lateral plane with respect to the periphery of the grinding stone or wheel 9.
Particularly do I emphasize the flange 16 which constitutes a fixed abutment against which the twisted end portion of the drill bit is placed as illustrated in Figure 2 in order to bring the points in proper relationship to the grinding stone. This adapter, together with the slidable clamping units, constitutes a unique ensemble .of details successful as a dependable means for rigidly holding the tool in proper relationship to the stone to secure precise and accurate sharpening of the pointed end of the drill bit.
A careful consideration of the foregoing description in conjunction with the illustrative drawings will enable the reader to obtain a clear understanding of the purpose, features and advantages, the explicit construction, and the invention as hereinafter claimed.
It is to be understood that minor changes in shape, size, relative proportions and materials may be resorted to in practice without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the invention as now claimed.
I claim:
1. A portable and detachable tool bit vise of the class described comprising an adapter unit embodying a horizontal plate having a fixed inclined flange at one end, a threaded stud adjacent the opposite end, an adjacent guide pin, a substantially U-shaped attaching clip adjacent the flanged end and on the underside of said base plate, a set screw carried by said clip, a slidable clamping unit comprising a slotted plate slidably mounted on said base plate and slidably connected with the stud and pin, a clamping nut carried by said stud and co-operable with the slotted plate, said slotted plate being provided at its inner end with an inclined clamping flange coordinated in parallelism with said first-named flange and being provided at its outer end with a finger gripping and adjusting flange.
2. A portable and detachable tool bit vise of the class described comprising an adapter unit embodying a plate having a flange. at one end extending angularly from the plate and disposed obliquely to the longitudinal dimension of the plate, a stud adjacent the opposite end of the plate, an adjacent guide pin on the plate, a slidable clamp unit comprising a slotted plate slidably mounted on said base plate and slidably connected with the stud and the pin, clamping means carried by said stud and cooperating with the slotted plate, said slotted plate being provided at one end with a clamping flange in parallelism: with said first mentioned flange.
