35 Claims.
This invention relates to perforating machines of the kind employed for perforating master control sheets for use in controlling power operated typewriting machines, perforating machines or 5 the like.
The principal object of the invention is to provide simple and efiicient means automatically controlled by the key levers for feeding the work sheet forwardly a distance corresponding to the requirements of the particular key which is operated.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a ratchet wheel on the feed roller with which a plurality of pawls are adapted to co- 5 operate, each of which is adapted to operate independently of the others to feed the work sheet.
Still another object of the invention is the provision of means operatively connected with one or the other of said pawls and operated by power means selectively controlled by the key levers.
A further object of the invention is the provision of three pawls each adapted to cooperate with a ratchet on the feed roller, one of said pawls being adapted to advance the roller and the work sheet one tooth distance, and the other two being mounted on an arm or carrier four ratchet teeth distances apart and operable to turn the roller a plurality of ratchet tooth distances, and one of which turns the roller four teeth distances farther than the other.
Still another object of the invention is the provision of a detent roller which resiliently engages the ratchet between two adjacent teeth to hold it in fixed angular position and which is carried on a lever pivoted on an adjustable pivot to vary the normal position of the feed roller.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a plurality of pawls adapted to cooperate with a ratchet on a feed roller and so arranged that the .feed roller is locked against rotation when they are in normal position and again when any one of them reaches the limit of its movement to prevent overthrow.
Still another object of the invention is the provision of means controlled by the key levers which actuate or control the punching operation for advancing the work sheet, the operations being so timed that the punching operation takes place and the punch withdrawn to free the work sheet before the work sheet is advanced over the die, so that the perforation formed is visible above the punch guide.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a perforating machine having a die hav- 65 ing openings at its front side, a punch guide arranged in front of said openings, and a plur'ality of punches movable in said guide to cooperate with said openings in the die to perforate a work sheet thereon, keys for selecting the punch 'to: be operated, and devices controlled by the operation of any of said punches for feeding the work sheet forward to move the perforation produced therein by the punch to a position in view of the operator above the punch guide, a scale or indicator being mounted on the punch guide in view of the operator and adjacent the perforated sheet for indicating to the operator which key was operated to produce a given perforation adjacent the scale or indicator.
To these and other ends, the invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts that will appear from the following description when read in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, the novel features being pointed out in the claims at the end of the specification.

Referring specifically to the drawings, in which like reference numerals refer to the same parts in all the views, 1 indicates the frame of the machine in which is fixedly mounted a die 2 over which a work sheet is fed by means of a feed roller 3 and guided thereto by means of the paper apron 4. The die 2 is provided with a plurality of openings 5 arranged horizontally in its front wall, with which cooperate punches or perforators 6 slidably mounted in a punch guide '7 arranged across the front of the die. At their front ends, the punches 6 are pivotally connected with sub-levers 8 pivoted on a common rod 9 ex- 110 tending across the front of the punch guide and supported thereon by means of arms 10. The lever 8 is slotted at 11 at its lower end, whereby it is slidably and pivotally engaged by a stud in the upper end of an arm 12 of a bell crank lever revolubly mounted on a common rod 13 extending across the machine. Said bell crank lever has a forwardly extending arm 14 pivotally connected with a link 15 which connects the bell crank lever with power operated devices. A spring 16 resiliently connects the arm 12 with a fixed part of the machine and normally maintains the lever 8 is a position with its punch in retracted position, and a rearwardly extending stop arm 17 thereon engages the punch guide to limit its movement under the action of the spring.
The link 15 is connected to an actuator 20 pivoted at 21 to the frame. The actuator is provided with an arm 22 on which a cam 23 is rotatably mounted adjacent the periphery of a power driven roller'24. The cam 23 has a stop 25, arranged in the path of which is a detent lever 26 pivotally mounted on the actuator 20. The cam has a reentrant portion 27 which normally faces the power roller 24 spaced therefrom when the stop 25 is engaged by the lever 26. The upper end of the lever 26 has an offset projection 28 which is engaged by the bifurcated end of an arm 29 on a key lever 30 also pivotally mounted on the rod 13. The key lever 30 is provided with a key 31 whereby it may be manually operated. When the key 31 is depressed, the lever 26 is moved from the path of the stop 25 on the cam which is then turned on its pivot into engagement with the power roller to be rotated thereby by means of a spring-pressed arm 32 which engages a lateral projection 33 on the cam. Rotation of the cam by the roller moves the axis of the cam away from the roller and swings the actuator 20 to operate the punch to which it is operatively connected. It will be understood that a punch is provided for each of the openings 5 in the die, each of which may correspond to one of the keys in the keyboard of a standard typewriting machine, and is operatively connected with the power devices to be selected by one of the keys 31.
It is desirable that the perforations in the master sheet appear in spaced relation longitudinally thereof, and to this end means are provided for feeding the work forwardly one or more spaces after each punching operation. The feed roller 3 is revolubly mounted on a shaft 35, and at its ends is provided a plurality of projections 36 adapted to positively engage a work sheet for feeding the same. Secured to the end of the feed roller to rotate therewith is a ratchet wheel 36 having teeth spaced to correspond to the minimum spacing required for the perforations in the sheet. Loosely mounted on the shaft 35 is an arm 37 on which is pivoted a pawl 38. The pawl 38 has a tooth 39 which normally is resiliently held in engagement with one or another of the teeth of the ratchet wheel by means of a spring 41 which is connected to the opposite end of the pawl and anchored to the arm 37. A link 42 is pivotally connected to the arm 37 and a rearwardly projecting arm 43on a universal bar 44 extending transversely of the machine and pivoted at 45 to the frame of the machine. Each of the bell cranks 12, 14 has a downwardly and rearwardly projecting arm 46 normally engaged by the universal bar 44. A coiled spring 47 is connected to the arm 43 and anchored to the frame of the machine, and resiliently maintains the universal bar in engagement with the arms 46 and the arm 37 in engagement with a fixed stop 48. If desired, the stop 48 may be adjustable as shown to insure the proper positioning of the work sheet and ratchet wheel at the end of the stroke of the pawl. As shown, the stop 48 is in the form of a stud eccentrically mounted on a screw rotatable in an opening provided therefor.
When a key is depressed to operate one of the punches 6, the arm 46 moves upwardly and swings the universal bar and arm 43, which in turn swings the arm 37 with its pawl 38 downwardly through the connecting link 42. During this movement, the pawl moves idly over the adjacent teeth of the ratchet until the arm 46 reaches the limit of its movement and is returned toward its normal position by the spring 16, and the arm 37 moves forward under the action of the spring 47 which moves the pawl and the ratchet and with it the feed roll until the arm 37 engages the stop 48. It will be noted that the punch 6 moves to cooperate with the die or the work sheet thereon while the arm 37 is being retracted, and the punch is withdrawn from the die and the work sheet under the action of its actuator and the spring 16 to free the work sheet before the spring 47 acts to move the pawl to feed the work sheet forwardly. Forward movement of the work sheet moves the perforation produced therein from behind the punch guide into view of the operator.
In order to properly aline the feed roller and hold it against accidental movement at all times, a roller detent 51 is provided. The detent 51 normally engages the ratchet between two teeth thereof and is revolubly mounted in one end of an arm or lever 52 pivoted at 53 on a fixed part. A spring 54 resiliently connects the other end of said lever with a fixed part of the machine and operates to hold the detent resiliently in engagement with the ratchet wheel. The pivot 53 of the 'lever 52 may be adjustable if desired, as illustrated in the drawings. To this end, the pivot is formed as a stud carried eccentrically on a screw which is revolubly mounted in a fixed 0pening provided therefor.
In performing certain operations on a typewriting machine controlled by a master sheet, 3.3 5
some operations, such as the carriage return and the movement of the carriage in tabulating operations, require an appreciable interval of time for their performance. For controlling such operations by means of a master sheet, it is necessary that perforations controlling such operations be followed by a blank space on the master sheet for a greater or less distance, determined by the length of time required for the particular operation, as many as eight or more spaces being some- 1? times required.
To this end, an arm 58 is fixed on the shaft 35, and has a pawl 59 pivotally mounted thereon in position to turn the ratchet wheel when the arm is turned in a clockwise direction to turn the feed roller. A spring 61 is connected to the end of the pawl and anchored on the arm 58, and tends to move the pawl to engage its tooth 62 with the ratchet. Normally the arm 58 occupies the position shown in the drawings adjacent the pawl 38, which is provided with an extention 63 which normally engages the pawl 59 at a'point between its pivot and the ratchet wheel. By this arrangement, the pawl 38 is locked in engagement with the ratchet wheel at the end of its forward stroke, and prevents overthrow thereof and normally secures it against accidental turning in either direction. Referring to Fig. 7, it will be noted that the arm 58 is carried on a hub 65 keyed to the shaft 35, and is offset inwardly toward the ratchet wheel, so that the pawls pivoted thereon are in the same plane with the ratchet wheel.
Means are provided for reciprocating the shaft 35 by power operated means to swing the arm 58 to turn the pawl with the ratchet and the feed roller in one direction with the shaft, the pawl riding idly over the teeth of the ratchet when the arm swings in the other direction. The right hand end of the shaft 35 has a bearing in a hub 66 on the frame of the machine in which it turns on the bushing 67. The hub 65 engages the hub 66 and serves as a thrust bearing for the shaft. Engaging the outer end of the hub 66 is a hub 68 of a pulley 69 which is also keyed to the shaft 35 and serves as a thrust bearing for the shaft in the other direction. A spring 71 is coiled about the hub 66 to which it is anchored and has its free end connected with the pulley 69. The spring 71 tends to resiliently turn the pulley and with it the shaft 35 and arm 58 secured thereto in a counter-clockwise direction, as seen from the right side of the machine, or in a direc tion to retract the arm 58 which it resiliently maintains in engagement with a stop 72 secured in a fixed part of the machine. The stop 72 may be adjustable, as-shown in the drawings, and to this end it is formed eccentrically on a stud rotatably mounted in the machine frame.
The pulley 69 is operatively connected with the power devices by means of a flexible tape 75, see Fig. 6, secured at one end to the pulley 69 at 76 and normally passing over the pulley to an idler 77, thence to the idler 78 and thence forwardly and downwardly to a pulley 79 to which its other end is secured at 80. The pulley 79 is loosely mounted on a driven shaft 81 mounted to turn on hearings in the frame of the machine. Keyed to the inner end of the shaft 81, by means of a pin or key 83, is a sleeve 84 having a worm gear 85 secured thereto. The gear 85 is operatively engaged by a worm 86 on a driven shaft 87 which is operatively connected with a source of power, such as an electric motor. The key 83 operatively engages diametrically arranged slots in a sleeve 88 fixed in the end of the roller 24, and operatively connects the roller with the sleeve 84 and shaft 81 to be rotated thereby. The hub 91 of the pulley 79 and the sleeve 84 are arranged in a fixed part 92 of the frame, and a light motor spring 93 is arranged in the pulley 79 and connects it with said fixed part and tends to turn the pulley in a direction to wind the tape 75 thereon and maintains it resiliently in a taut condition between the two pulleys on which it is mounted. .The usual lubricating devices for the gears 85 and 86 may be provided, as shown. A friction clutch is provided for connecting the pulley 79 with the driven shaft to be rotated thereby. To this end, a movable friction clutch member 95 is slidably keyed to the shaft 81 adjacent the outer face of the pulley 79 with which it is adapted to make frictional engagement. The pulley 79 has an outwardly projecting circumferential flange in which said clutch member is guided. If desired, a friction disk may be inserted between the clutch member 95 and the pulley, as shown. Loosely mounted on the shaft adjacent the outer face of the clutch member is a member or device 97 which engages the friction clutch member 95 through anti-friction thrust bearings 82, as clearly shown in the drawings. Means actuated by the punching'instrumentalities are provided for moving the member 95 into engagement with the pulley 79 to connect it with the shaft to berotated thereby.
To this end, a clutch actuating member or lever 101 is guided on a rod or pin 102 projecting from the frame of the machine above and parallel with the axis of the shaft 81. The member 101 is bifurcated at its lower end, which is arranged between the members 82 and 97, see Fig. 5. If the upper end of the member 101 is moved laterally to the right it swings on the rod 102, and its lower end means inwardly to the left and moves the clutch member 95 or the disk 96 into eng'agement with the side of the pulley 79 which is rotated thereby. Rotation of the pulley 79 is transmitted to the pulley 69 through the flexible tape 75 to turn the shaft 35 and swing the arm 58 fixed thereon to turn the feed roller.
At its upper end, the member 101 has secured thereto a pin or bolt 103, by any suitable means, such as nuts threaded thereon, as shown, to the inner end of which is pivotally connected a toggle link 104. The inner end of the toggle link is pivoted to the outer end of a toggle lever 105 pivoted at 106 to an arm 107 projecting inwardly from the frame of the machine. It will be noted that when the inner end of the toggle lever is swung downwardly, the toggle is straightened, which moves the upper end of the member 101 outwardly and swings its lower end inwardly to close the clutch. A spring fixed at one end on the frame of the machine engages the upper end of the lever 101 and tends to maintain it resiliently in its normal position, shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The inner end of the toggle lever has a slot 108 arranged vertically therein and having a shoulder 109 on its outer side. The lower end of a vertically arranged link 111 engages this slot. The link 111 is loosely pivoted on the end of a universal bar 112, and has a limited pivotal movement in the plane of the toggle lever 105, but is guided by a frame member which prevents movement in a plane at right angles thereto and maintains it in engagement with the slot in the end of the toggle lever. The universal bar 112 is pivoted on the common pivot rod 9. Those sub-levers 8 which are operatively connected with punches that produce perforations in the work sheet that require more than one space are adapted to engage and swing the universal bar 112 upwardly when any one of them moves to actuate its punch into engagement with the die or the work sheet thereon. This movement of the universal bar raises the link 111 until its lower end reaches the shoulder 109 in the toggle lever 105, when a spring 115 connected to the upper end of the link and anchored to the universal bar 112 swings the lower end of the link to a position above the shoulder 109. On the return stroke of the sub-lever, it releases the-universal bar, and a spring 116 connected to the link and anchored at 117 to a fixed part pulls the link and with it the universal bar downwardly and swings the toggle lever 105 in a direction to straighten the toggle and close the clutch to operate the arm 58 by the power operated devices through the flexible tape. During this movement, the pawl 59 which engages the ratchet turns the feed roller until the pawl engages a stop 118 mounted on an arm 119 of a lever 120 pivotally mounted on the shaft 35 of the feed roller. The stop 118 locks the end of the pawl against overthrow.
The lever 120 also has a forwardly and downwardly projecting arm 121, to the forward end of which a downwardly extending link 122 is pivoted. and the lower end of this link is pivotally connected with one arm of a bell crank lever 123 pivoted on the toggle lever 105, the other arm of which is adapted to engage the right hand side of the link 111. The link 122 may be constructed in two parts, threaded together to provide for slight longitudinal adjustment, if desired. The lever 120 has a limited forward movement on the shaft 35 when engaged by the pawl, which movement is fixed by the lateral movement of the link 111, which raises the link 122 and swings the bell crank 123 into engagement with the link 111. disengaging it from the shoulder 109, thus permitting the toggle lever to move to breakathe toggle and open the clutch to release .the pulley 79 from driving connec tion with the driven shaft. This action permits the spring '71 to turn the pulley 69 in a reverse direction to turn the shaft 35 and the arm 58 fixed thereto to the normal position in engagement with the stop '72. This movement is transmitted to the pulley '79 through the tape which is turned against the action of a relatively weak spring 93 which keeps the tape taut at all times, as previously explained.
By reference to Fig. 2, it will be noted that the stop 118 is arranged in one of a plurality of openings 125 arranged concentrically with respect to the ratchet wheel and spaced one ratchet tooth or unit feeding space distance apart. The stop 118, which limits the feeding movement of the pawl 59, is adapted to be arranged in any of said openings for the purpose of varying the stroke of the pawl. With the stop arranged in the position shown in the drawings, the pawl has its greatest movement, and in the embodiment illustrated, a distance of eight spaces. By arranging the stop in one of the other openings 125, it limits the movement of the pawl to less than eight spaces, the exact number depending on which of the openings the stop is arranged in, the present embodiment providing for a movement of the pawl 59 of from four to eight spaces.
In performing certain other operations on the typewriting machine, it is desirable to have the openings in the master sheet arranged at different spaces apart, four or less, for example as when shifting the platen or type basket for changing case. To this end, the arm 58 has a rearwardly projecting arm 127, on the end of which is pivoted a pawl 128. A spring 129 connects the pawl with the arm 127, and in the normal position shown in the drawings is arranged above the pivot of the pawl and resiliently maintains the pawl out of engagement with the rachet wheel. When, however, the pawl is moved into engagement with the ratchet, the spring passes over its pivot and resiliently maintains the pawl in engagement with the ratchet wheel. The spring 129 is connected to a pin 132 on the pawl, and this pin is adapted to engage the deflector 131. The deflector 131 is preferably constructed of thin resilient material and carried on an arm 133 of a bell crank lever 134, and extends rearwardly k, therefrom and is curved or arcuate in form so that its free end inclines toward the ratchet. The bell crank lever 134 is pivoted on the feed roller shaft 35 and has a rearwardly projecting arm 135 to which a downwardly extending link 136 is pivoted at one end, and at its other end is contains it in engagement with the ratchet.

The arm 133 has an inwardly projecting arm 133, see Fig. 1, which engages a cam surface 128 on the pawl and swings the pawl against the tension of its spring into engagement with the ratchet wheel. During this movement, the spring passes over the pivot of the pawl and then resiliently maintains the pawl in engagement with the ratchet wheel. When the arm returns to normal position, the deflector returns above the projection on the pawl and re- The levers' 139 operatively engage sub-levers 114 adapted to actuate the universal bar 112 which controls the devices for swinging the arm 58 on which the pawl 128 is carried. It will be noted by an inspection of Fig. 2 of the drawings that the lever 138 is operated to swing the deflector from pawl-engaging position when the bell crank 139 moves in a direction to engage its punch with the work sheet, which movement also actuates the universal bar 112 and raises the link 111 to engage the shoulder 109 on the toggle lever 105. When the sub-lever 114 returns to withdraw the punch from the work sheet, the lever 133 returns to normal position with the resilient arm 131 over the projection on the pawl 128. At the same time, the link 111 is depressed and swings the toggle lever 105 to actuate the clutch operating member 101 to close the clutch and move the pawl 128 forwardly to advance the work sheet until the pawl engages the movable stop 118. During this forward movement of the pawl, it is resiliently engaged by the finger 131 which springs or snaps under the projection on the pawl when the latter reaches the limit of its forward movement. When the pawl engages the stop 118 it is locked in engagement with the ratchet and prevents overthrow. The lever 119 is moved forwardly with the stop 118 when engaged by the pawl and raises the link 122, which swings the lever 123 and disengages the link 111 from operative engagement with the toggle lever 105 and disconnects the shaft 35 from its driving means. The operation of the parts is so timed that the arm 133 with the deflector returns to its normal position before the pawl, and the deflector resiliently engages the pawl or the arm 132 thereon during the forward movement of the latter, and when the pawl returns, the projection 132 on the pawl engages and rides on,
the upper surface of the deflector until the stop the sheet.
horizontally alined openings in its front wall with which the punches 6 cooperate to perforate the 4 work sheet on the die, the slugs being ejected within the die, from which they may be ejected by means of a rotary brush 140' which forms no part of the present invention. As previously explained, the work sheet is fed forwardly after each punching operation to move the perforation produced in the work sheet from behind the punch guide to a position above the punch guide in plain view of the operator. It is desirable that the operator be able to determine at once which key produced the last perforation in order that any error may be immediately detected.
To this end, a scale or indicator 141 is provided, which is secured to the top or upper surface of the punch guide with its rear edge adjacent the front surface of the perforated part of Such a scale or indicator is shown in detail in Fig. 4 of the drawings and is preferably constructed of sheet material, and bears a legend in alinement with each of the punches 6 indicating the character or operation to be controlled by the perforation produced thereby in the sheet. Thus arranged, the indicator is in plain view of the operator, and when a new perforation appears above the punch guide, its position with reference to the indicator at once indicates to the operator which key of the machine produced the perforation, or what effect the perforation is to have on the operation of the machine in which the master sheet is to be used. By this means, the operator at once becomes aware of any possible error in placing the perfo rations in the master sheet, so that they may be corrected immediately after being made.
It will be understood that one or more rows of the projections 36 are provided at each end of the feed roller and that if both were fixed to the feed roller, the distance between the projections on opposite ends of the feed roller would also be fixed. In practice, it is found that the width of the paper work sheet is not constant but varies with the temperature and humidity of the atmosphere in contact therewith, and as a result the distance between the perforations at the sides of the work also varies under similar conditions, causing it to buckle or stretch and tear when positively engaged with the feed roller, or the perforations at one side of the sheet may fail to register with the projections on the feed roller provided therefor. To overcome this diihculty, means has been provided for adjustably or movably mounting the projections on the roller at one end thereof so that they readily accommodate themselves to slight variations in the width of the sheet. To this end, the projections 36 at the right hand end of the feed roller are mounted on a ring 145 slidably mounted on a portion of the roller adjacent the ratchet wheel 36 which forms a stop for limiting the outward movement to the right of the ring. Plungers in the form of rods 146 are secured to the ring and slidably arranged in openings provided therefor in the end of the roller. The ring is loosely mounted on the roller so that the ring or the projections readily adjust themselves to variations in the distance between the lateral perforations in the sheet.
Although only one embodiment of the invention is shown and described herein, it will be understood that this application is intended to cover such changes or modifications as come within the spirit of the invention or scope of the following claims.
We claim:
1. In a perforating machine, the combination of a die, a punch guide arranged in front of the die, means for feeding a work sheet over the die and behind said punch guide, punches arranged in said punch guide and movable into cooperation with said die to perforate a work sheet thereon, bell crank levers for positively operating said punches, power driven devices for actuating said bell crank levers, key controlled means for operatively connecting said bell crank levers with said power driven devices, means including a universal bar for actuating said feeding means to feed the work sheet forwardly when a punch is retracted from the die to move the perforation produced by the punch into visibility above the punch guide, and means on said bell crank levers arranged to operatively engage said universal bar.
2. In a perforating machine, the combination of a die, a feed roller for feeding a work sheet thereover, punches operable into engagement with said die for perforating the work sheet thereon, key controlled devices for operating said punches, a ratchet on said feed roller, a reciprocatory pawl cooperating therewith to turn the feed roller, means actuated by said key controlled devices for controlling the operation of said pawl, a stop for limiting the movement of said pawl independently of the ratchet, a second pawl operable independently of the first pawl to turn the ratchet, and an arm on which said second pawl is pivoted so arranged when in normal position that the first mentioned pawl is locked between the pivot of the second pawl and the ratchet at the limit of its forward movement.
3. In a perforating machine, the combination of a die, a feed roller for feeding a work sheet thereover, punches operable into engagement with said die for perforating the work sheet thereon, key controlled devices for operating said punches, a ratchet on said feed roller, a spring actuated arm adapted to swing about the axis of said roller, a pawl on said arm normally in engagement with said ratchet for turning the roller, means actuated by said key controlled devices for retracting said arm, a stop for limiting the forward movement of said arm, a second pawl operable independently of the first mentioned pawl to turn the ratchet, and a second arm on which the second pawl is pivoted so arranged that the second pawl locks the first mentioned pawl in engagement with the ratchet when the first mentioned arm moves into engagement with its stop.
4. In a perforating machine, the combination of a die, a feed roller for feeding a work sheet thereover, a shaft for said feed roller, punches operable into engagement with said die for perforating the work sheet thereon, key controlled devices for operating said punches, a ratchet on said feed roller, a pawl engaging said ratchet for turning said feed roller, a spring actuated arm on which said pawl is carried, means actuated by said key controlled devices for retracting said arm, a stop for limiting the forward movement of said arm, a second pawl operable independently of the first pawl to turn the ratchet, and a second arm on the feed roller shaft on which said second pawl is pivoted, said second pawl being so arranged when the second arm is in normal position that the first mentioned pawl is locked in engagement with the ratchet between said feed roller shaft and the pivot of the second pawl when its arm engages the stop to limit its forward movement.
5. In a perforating machine, the combination of a die, a feed roller for advancing a work sheet thereover, punches operable into engagement with said die to perforate the work sheet, key controlled means for actuating said punches, a shaft on which said feed roller is revolubly mounted, a ratchet on said feed roller, an arm fixed on said shaft to rotate therewith, a pawl on said arm normally engaging said ratchet, means operatively connected with said key controlled means for turning said shaft to advance the feed roller, a lever operable to disconnect said shaft from its turning means, and a stop on said lever for limiting the movement of said pawl.
6. In a perforating machine, the combination of a die, a feed roller for advancing a work sheet thereover, punches operable into engagement with said die to perforate the work sheet, key controlled means for actuating said punches, a shaft on which said feed roller is revolubly mounted, a ratchet on said feed roller, an arm fixed on said shaft to rotate therewith, a pawl on said arm normally engaging said ratchet, means operatively connected with said key controlled means for turning said shaft to advance the feed roller, a lever pivoted on said shaft and operable to disconnect said shaft from its turning means, and a stop on said lever for limiting the movement of said pawl, the engagement of said pawl with the stop serving to operate the lever to disconnect said shaft from its turning means.
'7. In a perforating machine, the combination of a die, a feed roller for advancing a work sheet thereover, punches operable into engagement with said die to perforate the work sheet, key controlled means for actuating said punches, a shaft on which said feed roller is revolubly mounted, a ratchet on said feed roller, an arm fixed on said shaft to rotate therewith, a pawl on said arm normally engaging said ratchet, means operatively connected with said key controlled means for turning said shaft to advance the feed roller, a lever operable to disconnect said shaft from its turning means, a stop on said lever for limiting the movement of said pawl, and means for returning the shaft to normal position when disconnected from its turning means.
8. In a perforating machine, the combination of a die, a feed roller for advancing a work sheet thereover, punches operable into engagement with said die to perforate the work sheet, key controlled means for actuating said punches, a shaft on which said feed roller is revolubly mounted, a ratchet on said feed roller, an arm fixed on said shaft to rotate therewith, a pawl on said arm normally engaging said ratchet, means operatively connected with said key controlled means for turning said shaft to advance the feed roller, a lever operable to disconnect said shaft from its turning means, a stop on said lever for limiting the movement of said pawl, means for returning the shaft to normal position when disconnected from its turning means, and a fixed stop in the path of said arm for stopping the return movement of the shaft.
9. In a perforating machine, the combination of a die, a feed roller for feeding a work sheet thereover, a shaft on which said feed roller is revolubly mounted, a punch movable into engagement with said die for perforating the work sheet thereon, power operated devices, key controlled means operatively connecting said punch with the power operaed devices, a ratchet on said feed roller, an arm fixed on said shaft to turn therewith, a pawl on said arm operatively engaging said ratchet wheel, means actuated by said key controlled means for operatively connecting said shaft with said power operated devices to be driven thereby, and means arranged in the path of said pawl for disconnecting said shaft from said power operated devices.
10. In a perforating machine, the combination of a die, a feed roller for feeding'a work sheet thereover, a shaft on which said feed roller is revolubly mounted, a punch movable into engagement with said die for perforating the work sheet thereon, power operated devices, key controlled means operatively connecting said punch with the power operated devices, a ratchet on said feed roller, an arm fixed on said shaft to turn therewith, a pawl on said arm operatively engaging said ratchet wheel, means actuated by said key controlled means for operatively connecting said shaft with said power operated devices to be driven thereby, a movable stop in the path of said pawl for disconnecting said shaft from said power operated devices, resilient means for turning said shaft in a reverse direction, and a fixed stop for limiting the action of said resilient means.
11. In a perforating machine, the combination of a die, a feed roller for feeding a work sheet thereover, a shaft on which said feed roller is revolubly mounted, a punch movable into engagement with said die for perforating the work sheet thereon, power operated devices, key controlled means operatively connecting said punch with the power operated devices, a ratchet on said feed roller, an arm fixed on said shaft to turn therewih, a pawl on said arm operatively engaging said ratchet wheel, means actuated by said key controlled means for operatively connecting said shaft with said power operated devices to be driven thereby when the punch is retracted from engagement with the die, means operable by the rotation of said shaft for disconnecting it from said power operated devices, and resilient means for turning the shaft to normal position.
12. In a perforating machine, the combinaion of a die, a feed roller for feeding a work sheet thereover, a shaft on which said feed roller is revolubly mounted, a punch movable into engagement with said die for perforating the work sheet thereon, power operated devices, key controlled means operatively connecting said punch with the power operated devices, a ratchet on said feed roller, an arm fixed on said shaft to turn therewith, a pawl on said arm operatively engaging said ratchet wheel, a fixed stop in the path of said arm, a spring tending to rotate said shaft to maintain the arm resiliently engaged with said stop, means actuated by said key controlled means for operatively connecting said shaft with said power operated devices for turning the shaft against the tension of said spring to turn the feed roller, a movable stop in the path of said pawl for locking the pawl in engagement with said ratchet to prevent overthrow, and means operatively connected with said stop for disconnecting the shaft from the power operated devices.
13. In a perforating machine, the combination of a die, a feed roller for feeding a work sheet thereover, a shaft on which said feed roller is revolubly mounted, a punch movable into engagement with said die for perforating the work sheet thereon. power operated devices, key controlled means for operatively connecting said punch with the power operated devices, a ratchet on said 50 feed roller, an arm fixedon said shaft to turn therewith, a pawl on said am operatively engaging said ratchet wheel, a fixed stop in the path of said arm, a spring tending to rotate said shaft to maintain the arm resiliently engaged with said stop, a pulley fixed on said shaft, means operatively connected with said key controlled means for connecting said pulley with said power operated devices to be rotated thereby, a movable stop for limiting the rotation of said shaft, and means controlled by said movable stop for disconnecting said pulley from said power operated devices.
14. In a perforating machine, the combination of a die, a feed roller for feeding a work sheet thereover, a punch movable into and out of engagement with said die for perforating the work sheet thereon, a shaft on which said feed roller is revolubly mounted, power operated devicesv comprising a driven shaft, key controlled means for operatively connecting said punch with the power operated devices, a ratchet on said feed roller, an arm fixed on said shaft to turn therewith, a pawl on said arm resiliently engaging said ratchet, a fixed stop in the path of said arm, resilient means for turning said shaft to maintain said arm in engagement with said stop, a pulley fixed to said shaft, a second pulley operatively connected to said first mentioned pulley and loosely mounted on said driven shaft, means actuated by said key controlled means for connecting said second pulley to the driven shaft to be rotated thereby, and a movable device arranged in the path of said pawl to be actuated thereby for disconnecting said pulley from thedriven shaft.
15. In a perforating machine, the combination of a die, a feed roller for feeding a work sheet thereover, a punch movable into and out of engagement with said die for perforating the work sheet thereon, a shaft on which said feed roller is revolubly mounted, power operated devices comprising a driven shaft, key controlled means for operatively connecting said punch with the power operated devices, a ratchet on said feed roller, an arm fixed on said shaft to turn therewith, a pawl on said arm resiliently engaging said ratchet, a fixed stop in the path of said arm, resilient means for turning said shaft to maintain said arm in engagement with said stop, a pulley fixed to said shaft, a second pulley operatively connected to said first mentioned pulley and loosely mounted on said driven shaft, a clutch for operatively connecting said second pulley with said driven shaft, means actuated by said key controlled means for actuating said clutch to connect the pulley to the driven shaft to be rotated thereby, and a movable stop in the path of said pawl operatively connected with said clutch for releasing the pulley from the driven shaft when the stop is engaged by the pawl.
16. In a perforating machine, the combination of a die, a feed roller for feeding a work sheet thereover, a punch movable into and out of engagement with said die for perforating the work sheet thereon, a shaft on which said feed roller is revolubly mounted, power operated devices comprising a driven shaft, key controlled means for operatively connecting said punch with the power operated devices, a ratchet on said feed roller, an arm fixed on said shaft to turn therewith, a pawl on said arm resiliently engaging said ratchet, a fixed stop in the path of said arm, resilient means for turning said shaft to maintain said arm in engagement with said stop, a pulley fixed to said shaft, a second pulley operatively connected with said first mentioned pulley and loosely mounted on said driven shaft, a clutch for operatively connecting said pulley with said driven shaft, a clutch operating member for closing the clutch to connect the pulley with the driven shaft, means operatively connected with said key controlled means for actuating said clutch operating member to close the clutch to connect the pulley with the driven shaft when the punch is operated into engagement with the die, and a movable stop in the path of said pawl operatively connected with said clutch operating member for releasing the clutch when the stop is engaged by the pawl.
17. In a perforating machine, the combination of a die, a feed roller for feeding a work sheet thereover, a punch movable into and out of engagement with said die for perforating the work sheet thereon, a shaft on which said feed roller is revolubly mounted, power operated devices comprising a driven shaft, key controlled means for operatively connecting said punch with the power operated devices, a ratchet on said feed roller,-an arm fixed on said shaft to turn therewith, a pawl on said arm resiliently engaging said ratchet, a fixed stop in the path of said arm, resilient means for turning said shaft to maintain said arm in engagement with said stop, a pulley fixed to said shaft, a second pulley operatively connected with said first mentioned pulley and loosely mounted on said driven shaft, a clutch for operatively connecting said pulley with said driven shaft, a clutch operating member for closing the clutch to connect the pulley with the driven shaft, a toggle device for actuating said clutch operating member, means operatively connected with said key controlled means for mov ing the parts of the toggle in alinement to close the clutch, and a movable stop in the path of said pawl operatively connected with said toggle for moving its parts out of alinement to open the clutch when the stop is engaged by the pawl.
18. In a perforating machine, the combination of a die, a feed roller for feeding a work sheet thereover, a punch movable into and out of engagement with said die for perforating the work sheet thereon, a shaft on which said feed roller is revolubly mounted, power operated devices comprising a driven shaft, key controlled means for operatively connecting said punch with the power operated devices, a ratchet on said feed roller, an arm fixed on said shaft to turn therewith, a pawl on said arm resiliently engaging said ratchet, a fixed stop in the path of said arm, resilient means for turning said shaft to maintain said arm in engagement with said stop, releasable means for operatively connecting said shaft with the driven shaft to be rotated thereby, means operatively connected with said key controlled means for connecting said shaft with the driven shaft, and a movable device in the path of said pawl for disconnecting said shaft from the driven shaft.
19. In a perforating machine, the combination of a die, a feed roller for feeding a work sheet 3- o no thereover, a punch movable into and out of enient means for turning said shaft to maintain said arm in engagement with said stop, a pulley fixed to said shaft, a clutch for operatively conmeeting said pulley with said driven shaft, clutch operating means, means operatively connected with said key controlled means for actuating said clutch operating means to drive said pulley, and a movable stop for limiting the movement of said shaft and operatively connected with said clutch operating means for releasing the clutch.
20. In a perforating machine, the combination of a die, a feed roller for feeding a work sheet thereover, a punch movable into and out of engagement with said die for perforating the work sheet thereon, a shaft on which said feed roller is revolubly mounted, power operated devices comprising a driven shaft, key controlled means for operatively connecting said punch with the power operated devices, a ratchet on said feed roller, an arm fixed on said shaft to turn therewith, a pawl on said arm resiliently engaging said ratchet, a fixed stop in the path of said arm, resilient means for turning said shaft to maintain said arm in engagement with said stop, a pulley fixed to said shaft, a clutch for operatively connecting said pulley with said driven shaft, clutch operating means, a device operatively connected with said key controlled means and engageable with said clutch operating means for closing the clutch to turn said shaft, and a movable stop for limiting the movement of said shaft and operable to disengage said device from the clutch operating means.
21. In a perforating machine, the combination of a die, a feed roller for feeding a work sheet thereover, a punch movable into and out of engagement with said die for perforating the work sheet thereon, a shaft on which said feed roller is revolubly mounted, power operated devices comprising a driven shaft, key controlled means for operatively connecting said punch with the power operated devices, a ratchet on said feed roller, an arm fixed on said shaft to turn therewith, a pawl on said arm resiliently engaging said ratchet, a fixed stop in the path of said arm, resilient means for turning said shaft to maintain said arm in engagement with said stop, a pulley fixed to said shaft, a clutch for connecting said pulley with said driven shaft, clutch operating means, a device operatively connected with said key controlled means and engageable with said clutch operating means for closing the clutch to turn said shaft, a movable stop for limiting the movement of said shaft, and an arm operatively connected with said stop and operable to disengage said device from said clutch operating means.
22. In a perforating machine, the combination of a die, a feed roller for feeding a work sheet thereover, a punch movable into and out of engagement with said die for perforating the work sheet thereon, a shaft on which said feed roller is revolubly mounted, power operated devices comprising a driven shaft, key controlled means for operatively connecting said punch with the power operated devices, a ratchet on said feed roller, an arm fixed on said shaft to turn therewith, a pawl on said arm resiliently engaging said ratchet, a fixed stop in the path of said arm, resilient means for turning said shaft to maintain said arm in engagement with said stop, a pulley fixed to said shaft, a clutch for connecting said pulley with said driven shaft, clutch operating means comprising a toggle lever, a device operatively connected with said key controlled means engageable with said toggle lever for actuating the clutch operating means to close the clutch, an arm on said toggle lever operable to disengage said device therefrom, a movable stop for limiting the movement of said shaft, and means operatively connecting said stop with said arm.
23. In a perforating machine, the combination of a die, a feed roller for feeding a work sheet thereover, a punch movable into and out of engagement with said die for perforating the work sheet thereon, a shaft on which said feed roller is revolubly mounted, power operated devices comprising a driven shaft, key controlled means for operatively connecting said punch with the power operated devices, a ratchet on said feed roller, an arm fixed on said shaft to turn therewith, a pawl on said arm resiliently engaging said ratchet, a fixed stop in the path of said arm, resilient means for turning said shaft to maintain said arm in engagement with said stop, a pulley fixed to said shaft, a clutch for connecting said pulley with said driven shaft, a clutch operating device, a toggel for operating said device comprising a slotted toggle lever, a shoulder on said toggle lever adjacent its slot, a link having one end arranged in the slot in said lever and operatively connected with said key controlled devices, means for engaging said link with said shoulder when the key controlled devices are operated to move the toggle lever to operate the clutch operating device to close the clutch, an arm pivoted on said toggle lever and operable to disengage the link therefrom, a movable stop for limiting the movement of said pawl, and a link connecting said arm and movable stop.
24. In a perforating machine, the combination of a die, a feed roller for feeding a work sheet thereover, a punch movable into and out of engagement with said die for perforating the work sheet thereon, a shaft on which said feed roller is revolubly mounted, power operated devices comprising a driven shaft, key controlled means for operatively connecting said punch with the power operated devices, a ratchet on said feed roller, an arm fixed on said shaft to turn therewith, a pawl on said arm resiliently engaging said ratchet, a fixed stop in the path of said arm, resilient means for turning said shaft to maintain said arm in engagement with said stop, a pulley fixed to said shaft, a clutch for connecting said pulley with said driven shaft, clutch operating means comprising a slotted toggle lever, a universal bar, a link movably mounted on said universal bar and arranged in the slot in said toggle lever, a shoulder on said toggle lever adapted to be engaged by said link when said universal bar is actuated, an arm pivoted on said toggle lever and operable into engagement with said link to disengage it from said shoulder, a movable stop for limiting the movement of said pawl, and a link operatively connecting said 'stop with said pivoted arm.
25. In a perforating machine, the combination of a die, a feed roller for advancing a work sheet thereover, a shaft on which said feed roller is revolubly mounted, a punch cooperating with said die'for perforating the work sheet thereon, power devices including a driven shaft, key controlled means for operatively connecting said punch with said power devices, a ratchet on said feed roller, a pawl cooperating therewith, an arm fixed on said feed roller shaft on which said pawl is pivoted, a fixed stop in the path of said arm, resilient means for turning the shaft to engage said arm with said fixed stop, a pulley fixed on said feed roller shaft, a second pulley loosely mounted on said driven shaft, flexible means operatively connecting said pulleys, resilent meanstending to turn said second pulley to wind said flexible means thereon, means operatively connected with said key controlled means for connecting said second pulley with the driven shaft to rotate therewith, a movable stop for limiting the movement of said feed roller shaft, and means actuated by the movement of said stop for disconnecting said second pulley from said driven shaft.
26. In a perforating machine, the combination of a die, a feed roller for advancing a work sheet thereover, a punch movable into engagement with said die for perforating the work sheet thereon, power operated means, key controlled means for operatively connecting said punch with "saicL power operated means to be actuated thereby, a ratchet on said feed roller, a shaft on which said feed roller revolves, an arm fixed on said shaft, a pawl on said arm normally in engagement with said ratchet, means actuated by said key controlled means for connecting said shaft with the power operated means to be driven thereby, a, movable stop in the path of said pawl operable to disconnect the shaft from its driving means, a movable device on said arm, and means actuated by said key controlled means for moving said device into a posi tion to engage said stop.
27. In a perforating machine, the combination of a die, a feed roller for advancing a work sheet thereover, a punch movable into engagement with said die for perforating the work sheet thereon, power operated means, key controlled means for operatively connecting said punch with said power operated means to be actuated thereby, a ratchet on said feed roller, a shaft on which said feed roller revolves, an arm fixed on said shaft, a pawl on said arm normally in engagement with said ratchet. means actuated by said key controlled means for operatively connecting said shaft with the power operated means, a movable stop in the path of said pawl operable to disconnect said shaft from the power operated means, a stop device movably mounted on said arm and normally in position to avoid said movable stop, and means actuated by said key controlled means for moving said stop device to a position to engage said movable stop in advance of said pawl to limit the movement of the pawl.
28. In a perforating machine, the combination of a die, a feed roller for advancing a work sheet thereover, a punch movable into engagement with said die for perforating the work sheet thereon, power operated means, key controlled means for operatively connecting said punch with said power operated means to be actuated thereby, a ratchet on said feed roller, a shaft on which said feed roller revolves, an arm fixed on said shaft, a pawl on said arm normally in engagement with said ratchet, means actuated by said key controlled means for operatively connecting said shaft with the power operated means, a movable stop in the path of said pawl operable to disconnect said shaft from the power operated means, a stop device movably mounted on said am, means for maintaining said stop device normally out of the path of said movable stop, and means actuated by said key controlled means for moving said stop device to a position to engage said movable stop in advance of said pawl.
29. In a perforating machine, the combination of a die, a feed roller for advancing a work sheet thereover, a punch movable into engagement with said die for perforating the work sheet thereon, power operated means, key controlled means for operatively connecting said punch with said power operated means to be actuated thereby, a ratchet on said feed roller, a shaft on which said feed roller revolves, an arm fixed on said shaft, a pawl on said arm normally in engagement with said ratchet, means actuated by said key controlled means for operatively connecting said shaft with the power operated means, a second pawl on said arm normally out of engagement with said ratchet, means actuated by said key controlled means for moving the second pawl into "engagement with said ratchet, a movable stop in the path of said second pawl, and means operatively connected with said movable stop for disconnecting the shaft from the power operated means.
30. In a perforating machine, the combination of a die, a feed roller for advancing a work sheet thereover, a punch movable into engagement with said die for perforating the work sheet thereon, power operated means, key controlled means for operatively connecting said punch with said power operated means to be actuated thereby, a ratchet on said feed roller, a shaft on which said feed roller revolves, an arm fixed on said shaft, a pawl on said arm normally in engagement with said ratchet, means actuated by said key controlled means for operatively connecting said shaft with the power operated means, a second pawl on said arm, an arm movably mounted on the feed roll shaft, a guide member mounted on said arm, a projection on said second pawl engaging said guide member to retain the pawl out of engagement with the ratchet, means on said movable arm for moving said second, pawl into engagement with said ratchet, means actuated by said keycontrolled means for moving the arm to release the pawl and move it into engagement with the ratchet, a movable stop in the path of said pawl, and means controlled by said movable stop for releasing said shaft from the power operated means.

In a perforating machine, the combination of a die, a feed roller for advancing a work sheet thereover, a punch movable into engagement with said die for perforating the work sheet thereon, power operated means, key controlled means for operatively connecting said punch with said power operated means to be actuated thereby, a ratchet on said feed roller, a shaft on which said feed roller revolves, an arm fixed on said shaft, a pawl on said arm normally in engagement with said ratchet, means actuated by said key controlled means for operatively connecting said shaft with the power operated means, a second pawl on said arm, a movable arm mounted on said feed roll shaft to turn thereon, a flexible guide plate on said movable arm extending in the direction of said ratchet, a projection on said pawl normally engaging said guide plate to retain the pawl out of engagement with the ratchet, means actuated by said key controlled means for moving said arm to release the pawl, a projection on said arm adapted to engage the pawl with the ratchet when the arm is moved said flexible guide plate operating to maintain the pawl in engagement with the ratchet while Ill the pawl moves forwardly, a movable stop arranged in the path of said pawl, and means actuated by the movement of said stop for releasing said shaft from said power operated means.

In a perforating machine, the combination of a die, a feed roller for advancing a work sheet thereover, a punch movable into engagement with said die for perforating the work sheet thereon, power operated means, key controlled means for operatively connecting said punch with said power operated means to be actuated thereby, a ratchet on said feed roller, a shaft on which said feed roller revolves, an arm fixed on said shaft, a pawl on said arm normally in engagement with said ratchet, means actuated by said key controlled means for operatively connecting said shaft with the power operated means to turn the shaft in a forward direction, resilient means for turning the shaft in the other direcion, a second pawl on said arm, an arm mounted on said feed roll shaft to turn thereon, a resilient guide member on said arm extending in the direction of said ratchet, a projection on said pawl engaging said guide member to retain the pawl out of engagement with the ratchet when the pawl is idle and in engagement with the ratchet when the pawl moves forwardly with the ratchet and also operative to disengage the pawl from the ratchet on its return stroke, a movable stop in the path of the pawl, and means actuated by the movement of said stop for releasing the shaft from said power operated means.

In a perforating machine, the combination of a die, a feed roller for advancing a work sheet thereover, a punch movable into engagement with said die for perforating the work sheet thereon, power operated means, key controlled means for operatively connecting said punch with said power operated means to be actuated thereby, a ratchet on said feed roller, a shaft on which said feed roller revolves, an arm fixed on said shaft, a pawl on said arm normally in engagement with said ratchet, means actuated by said key controlled means for operatively connecting said shaft with the power operated means to turn the shaft in a forward direction, resilient means for turning the shaft in the other direction, a second pawl on said arm, a movable arm mounted on said feed roll shaft to turn thereon, a resilient guide member on said arm extending in the direction of said ratchet, a pro-- jection on said second pawl engaging said guide member to retain the pawl out of engagement with the ratchet when the pawl is idle and in engagement with the ratchet when the pawl moves forwardly with the ratchet and also operative to disengage the pawl from the ratchet on its return stroke, resilient means for retaining said-pawl out of engagement with the ratchet when disengaged therefrom and engaged with the ratchet when moved into engagement therewith, amo'v'able stop in the path of the pawl, and means actuated by the movement of saidstop for releasing the shaft from said power operated means.

In a perforating machine, the combination of a die, a feed roller for advancing a work sheet thereover, punches movable into and out of cooperation with said die to perforate the work sheet thereon, a shaft on which said feed roller is revolubly mounted a ratchet wheel fixed to said feed roller, an arm pivotally mounted on said shaft, a pawl on said arm normally engaging said ratchet wheel, key controlled means for actuating one of said punches and retracting said pawl over a tooth of the ratchet, resilient means for moving the pawl-forward with the ratchet, a stop for limiting such forward move-' ment-of the pawl to space the perforations inthe sheet a single ratchet tooth distance apart and means for independently advancing the feed roller to space the perforations a greater distance apart, said means comprising an arm fixed on said shaft, a pawl on said arm normally engaging said ratchet, a fixed stop, resilient means for turning said shaft and maintaining said arm in normal engagement with said stop, key controlled means for operating another of said punches and turning said shaft to advance the feed roller a distance of a plurality of said ratchet teeth, and an adjustable stop for limiting the movement of said pawl.
