This invention relates to an improved fountain brush which is especially, but not.
necessarily, adapted for scrubbing and cleaning automobile bodies and the like. In carrying the inventive conception into actual practice, I have found it expedient and practical to construct a casting of practical design such as embodies water supply and return passages as well as a propulsion rotor for a pair of associated brush elements.
More specifically stated, I have developed a valve equipped, especially fashioned casting constituting a mounting for a duplex brush construction, the casting embodying a miniature turbine operated by water pressure in such a manner as to drive the shaft on which the brush elements are mounted.
Other features and details will become more readily apparent from the following description and drawings. In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of the complete brush developed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is a central longitudinal sectional view of the casting.
Figure 3 is a horizontal section on the line 33 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a detail view of the brush handle and hose.
Figure 5 is an elevational view of the bladed rotor constituting a part of the miniature turbine.
The especially fashioned casting or body is generally represented by the numerals 6. It embodies a water delivery duct 7 and a water return duct 8. The latter terminates in a curvate end portion 9 which surrounds the intake end portion of the supply duct 7 and co-operates with a deflecting blade at 10. Incidently, at this end of the structure, there is a control valve 11 of appropriate construction. Moreover the feed water supply pipe 12 is attached to the valve and the pipe constitutes a handle for the brush and is so fashioned as to accommodate an ordinary garden hose or the like 13 which is clamped or otherwise fastened thereon as indicated at Figure 4.
The right hand end portion of the casting is fastened to form a miniature turbine generally designated by the numeral 14:. This comprises a substantially circular casing including a body portion 15 and a cover'portion 16. This ca-sing is formed with bear I ings to accommodate the brush propeller shaft 17. Incidently on opposite ends of the shaft are appropriate brush heads 18 having sockets 19 to accommodate theshaft ends.
That portion of the shaft extending through the hearings in the housing or casing 14 is provided with a rotor 20 of general circular configuration mounted eccentrically within the housing as shown in Figure 2 to co-operate in proper relationship with the respective ducts 7 and 8. This rotor is formed with spring pressed abutments or blades 21 which sweep around in contact with the inner periphery or rim of the housing.
Incidently the numeral 22 designates an appropriate brush guard which spans the inner ends of the brushes 18 and which is provided with flexible rubber flaps 23.
In practice, this water supply hose 13 is fastened to the handle forming pipe 12. When the valve 11 is turned on, the water rushes in under pressure through the inlet duct 7 and plays upon the spring pressed blades of the rotor. This drives the rotor and the rotor in turn drives the shaft 17 The water is expelled through the return conduit 8 and the nozzle end of this conduit co-operates with the deflector or bafiie plate 10 thus shooting a stream of water in diverging fashion against the brush elements 18 on the rotating shaft 17 Thus the desired fountain action, as well as turbine drive is provided from a single source of water supply.
It is thought that persons skilled in the art to which the invention relates will be able to obtain a clear understanding of the invention after considering the description in connection with the drawings. Therefore, a more lengthy description is regarded as unnecessary. Minor changes in shape, size, and rearrangement of details coming within the field of invention claimed may be resorted to in actual practice if desired.
I claim: In a structure of the class described, a turbine comprising a circular housing having a water inlet and a Water outlet, a bladed rotor in said housing, said housing being prov'ided with bearings, a shaft mounted for rotation in said-bearings, said rotor being mounted 011 said shaft, brush elements mounted on the end portions of the shaft and located on opposite sides of the hous- 7 ing, a valved water supply pipe connected with the water inlet, a constantly opened Water return pipe connected with the outlet and terminating in a discharge nozzle directed towards said brushes and a deflector plate mounted on said water supply pipe adjacent said nozzle to direct the-water from the nozzleagainst the brush elements.
