This invention relates to lasting machines and processes,and more particularly to those of `the character employing' wipers in order to wipe the upper over the last.
This invention is particularly, although not exclusively, applicable for the lasting of shoes in accordance with the methods and processes described in Patents Nos. 1,572,042 of Feb. 9, 1926, and 1,602,368 of October 5,
' 10 1926; accordingly, o ne of the objects of this invention is to provide a machine and p-rocess whereby the methods and` processes described in the foregoing patent may be conveniently and expeditiously performed.
Another object of this invention is to providea lasting machinev and process whereby the shank as well as the torepart may be simultaneously wiped over an insole part on the last in order that an outsole part may be laidon and temporarily tacked to the lasted upper and insole part while the upper is held under tension due to the wiping, the wipers being then withdrawn.
Another object of this invention is to provide a lasting machine in which the wipers or lasting elements are so mounted and actuated as to `not only engage and wipe the upper over the last .as the wipers are moved to engaging position, but in which these wipers adjust themselves to the bottom of the last.`
Another object rot this invention is to provide `a klasting machine in which the wiper is composed oat' sections adapted to conform colle ctively tothe last bottom, and in which adjusting means .are provided in order 4to secure such conformation. 1
Another object of this invention is to provide alasting machine in which the wipers or lasting elements are so mounted as to permit them to be freely adjusted to the last and the Iupper 'thereon in order that the lasting opera-tion may be performed expeditiously and in a simple manner. f
Another object is to provide a lasting machine which is simple in construction and opera-tion, effective in its action and economical to manufacture and maintain.

previously referred to, the upper is wiped n over an insole or insole part on the last; an outsole or outsole part is laid on and tacked to the lastedupper while the latter is under tension due to the wiping; the wipers are then withdrawn while 'the upper is so held and the outsole or outsole part moved onto the lasted upper; the last can then be withdrawn, the sole secured by seaniing therethrough .and through the upper, and the lasting tacks can then be withdrawn. Y
Generally stated and in accordance with this invention, the upper is wiped over `the insole part on the last not only along the torepart but also along'the shank', in one operation; the outsole part is then laid on and temporarily tacked to the lasted upper along the loreparty and the vshank while the upper is held under tension due to the wiping; the wipers canthen be withdrawn, rand the sole moved down on the tackshanks onto the` lasted upper; the sole can then be permanent# ly secured to the lasted upper in anysuitabl'e` manner as by through and through-stitching, and the tacks can then be withdrawn.
Mechanism is provided for securing the desired operations. y A wiper is provided which is adjustable to conform to the last bottoni lalong the forepart andshank and constructed and mounted on its carrier to lie close to the last bottom in order toVV permit placement thereover of a sole; the tip of the wiper may have tack receiving recesses adapt ed to permit the tacks to be driven through the sole and into the lasted upper. The wiper is preferably composed of sections adapted to conform collectively to the last bottom and means is provided permitting adjustment of one or more of the sections in order to secure such conformation. In accordance with one embodiment of this invention each wiper has a. shank swiveled on the carrier while a lug on the shank is engaged by yielding means on the carrier in order to permit adjustment of the wiper section about an axis therealong so as to vary its inclination along the last.
In accordance with this invention a guide is provided which is directed cross-wise of the last. This guide is, however, mounted at its outer end and laterally of the last so as to swing horizontally as Well as vertically at its inner end while the mounting` itself is arranged for vvertical as well as horizontal adjustment. A lasting element carrier 1s movable along this guide and between the mounting and the last and this carrier itself is arranged for adjustment so as to conform to the last and the upper thereon. Accordingly the guide is arranged to be pointed on selected parts of the last so as to enable the lasting element to cooperate with the upper l thereon while the carrier itself is movable towards and from the last in the direction in which it has been pointed.
-In'accordance with one vembodiment of this invention, the horizontal swinging movement of the guide and the carrier thereon is controlled by suitable frictional devices, which operate to hold the guide and carrier against Shifting while the lastin means is adjusted to the last and the upper t ereon. This guide and carrier and the lasting element thereon are held down by suitable means such as a weight, and elevated by suitable means such as a treadle. r
Referring now to the accompanying drawings, and more particularly to Figs. 1 and 2, a frame 1 is mounted on suitab-le legs 2. The frame has mounted thereon a j ack of any suitable and usual construction comprising a toe support 3 and a heely support 4 mounted on a standard 5 adjusted towards and from the toe support by an adjusting handle 6 and arranged to be held in raised position by a weight 7 .and lowered by a treadle. 8. This jack may be of` any suitable and usual construction, the particular embodiment shown being that illustrated in our application, Serial No. 241,801, executed and filed of even Vdate herewith. The last is generally shown Arranged on each side of the last is wiper mechanism, and since they are in duplicate a description of one will be sufficient. Referring to Figs'. 1, 2 and 3, mounted on the frame 1 is afbracket 10 providing a bearing for VVa screwr 11 having its end 12 formed to receive Va wrench or a crank and having its lower end 13 formed to provide a step bearing while a collar 14 restrains upward movement. Threaded on the screw is a nut 15 which has swiveled thereon a head or fork 16 in which in turn is mounted a guide 17, the outer end of which is threaded as shown at 18 to receive a hand wheel 19. The bracket 10 may be mounted for horizontal adjustment on the frame; this can be accomplished in any suitable manner as by pivoting the bracket about one of the holding screws 100 and providing a slot 102 through which the other screw 101 passes. The bracket may` therefore, be adjusted on the frame and clamped in the desired adjusted position.
The hand wheel 19 has a hub 20 which is threaded on the part 18 of the guide 17 whose inner end has a key 200, and the hub 20 is provided with a collar 22. Connected arms 23 are formed to engage respectively with the collar and the key so as to provide a support splined on the guide and arranged to be moved therealong Vby the hand wheel. The arms may be connected by a member 21 which may be formed to provide a weight; however edges of the base being circular while a pivot g bolt 28 may also be provided. A screw 29 having a manipulative head 30 has threaded thereon a nut 31 swiveled in a fork 32 whose shank is in turn swiveled on the carrier at 33.
The bottom end of the screw has a thrustf;
bearing in a block 34 swiveled on the support `at 36. A screw 37 provided with a minipulative head 38 is threaded into a nut 39 provided with a shank swiveled at 40 in the carrier 26 while the end of the screw has a thrust bearing in a block 41 provided with a shank swiveled in the base at 42. The screw 29 manipulated by the head 30 swings the base 25 on the pivot 24; while the screw 37 manipulated by the head 38 swings the carrier 26 about the pivot 28.
The inner end of the guide 17 has afiixed thereto a collar 43 on which is pivoted a block 44 connected by a link section 45 with a turnbuckle 46 which is in turn connected with a link section 47 having a universal coupling with a rearwardly extending arm 48 connected with a forwardly extending treadle 49 pivoted on a shaft 50. The link section has a collar 52 arranged to be locked in any desired position thereon as by a set screw.

This slide passes through aligned slots inY uprights onthe base 800, while the .slide is held yieldingly by leather facings 86 bearing against pl-ates87 and 88. The lower plate 88 rests upon a pivot 89 on a plate 90 held between the uprights 85 by sockets 91 in the plate engaged by pins 92 in the uprights. The upper plate k87 has bearing in :a lsocket therein ay spring 9.3 which bears against ,la screw 94 adjust-able in .a plate 95-provided withv sockets 96 engaged by pins 97 inthe uprights.
The carrier 26 is provided with -bearings 56, which in Figs. l, 2 and 3, are two in number in order to receive the shanks v57 of the wipers58. Clamped oneach kwiper shank by thereon in'any suitable manner as byset ,screw 590. Each of theserblocks has :also .al-ug 61 positioned by$pring pressed plungers backed by screws 62 asin Fig. 3. The bearing blocks maybe mountedl on :a carrier such as26, Fig. 3,' they may, however, be mounted on any suitable machinesuch as illustrated Tin Patent No. 1,588,916, June 15, 1926, in which the carriers are generally shown rat 70, as in such patent, and the bearingblocks 56 are mounted on a bracket 63 attached to the carrier 70 by a screw `64. i
Whatever the number of wiper sections/58 or 580 may be, they are adapted to' conform collectively to the last bottom as well ascontoured at their edges to conform generally tothe contour -of Ythe insole, or ratherfthe inside edge .of the upper as formed `over the last as shown in Figs. 2 and 6. In'practice, however, the wiper `sections are so Vformed .as to conform approximately to an average last bottom, for thesections are adjustableto conform toa given last bottom.
The wipers not only conform to the last bottom, but they are constructed and mounted on their-carriers so as to lie close to the last bottom in order to permit placement thereover of a sole. The wipers are preferably made of steel so as to be yielding and in order to promote the -yield the edges are split to form fingers 67. Each wiperplate tip may also have a seri-es of .recesses 68 through which the tacks may he driven in order to secure the outsole to thelas'ted upper and in order to permit the wipers` to be withdrawn after the outsole has been so secu-red.
The operation-s ofthe machine and process is generally as follows :and reference will be particularly had toFigs. 1, 2 and 3, in con'- necition with Figs. .7 to l11 inclusive, since the operation. of the embodiment, Figs. 4, 5 and 6, Will lthen be so well` understood that no -furtherzdescription will be necessary.
- Assuming that a last withthe upper and insole assembled thereon has been placed on its jack in proper position, the operator will depress one of the treadles et9so as to raise the Vwiper carrier audits attached weight in order to place the wiper above the bottom of the last. v,The operator will then move the wiper carrier towards the last by manipulation of the lhand wheel 19, meanwhile releasing the treadlesufficiently tov cause the ends of the wiper sections to engage the upper; the wiper sections are now permitted by their spring pressed plungers to conform to the last bottom. The Aguide 17 and the wiper edges can now be placed inproper position; but if the .parts onwhich it is mounted about the 4screw -12 (Figure 2) and by swinging the wiper carrier26 about ,the pivot 28 (Figure 3), the inside edge of the wiper can be shifted to conform to thecontour of the last bottom. The -proper tipping of the wiper sections collec'tively `can be ksecured by manipulation of the knurled head 30. Moreover, the proper inclination of the wipers can be secured by adjustment of the screw l2. Assuming then thatfallthe adjustments have been made and :that the wipers are moved in to engagethe upper, the operator will turnup the edge of the .upper so as to permit the wiper to `abut thereagainst. After the wiper section tips have moved sufficiently over the lastso they will bear down thereon, the treadle can be released so that the wiper sections will now be pressed on the last bottom by the Weight 21. By nowv manipulating the hand wheel 1.9 the upper can be wiped over the last tothe desired extent. The same operation may be performed on the other side of the last, and since the wipers may be adjusted in any desired sequence, the upper may not only be wiped overthe'last but also centered thereon.
5 In view of the fact that the wipers as a whole conform to the .last bottom along the forepart` and shank and can be adjusted to sejcfure such conformation, the upper will be lasted not only along the forepart but also along the shank. After the upper has thus been wiped over, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and also in Figs. 6 and 7, and while the wipers are in position with `,the upper under the tension due to the lasting, an outsole 75 is placed over the wipers and properly positioned with respect tothe lasted upper; lasting tacks 76 are thendriven through the outsol'eyupper and into the insole 77 these tacks passing through the recesses 68. If desired, the last may be provided with a. metal bottom 78. The wipers are now withdrawn as shown in F ig. 11, and .the outsole pressed down on the shanks of the lasting tacks. lThe lasted upper and outsole can now be delasted and secured together in any suitable manner as by through and through stitching 79, as shown in Fig. 12. The lasting tacks can then be withdrawn, the channel flap 80 turned down and the shoe iinished in the usual manner.
It will thus be seen that the invention accomplishes its objects. A lasting machine is provided whereby the lasting operations may be performed in a simple and effective manner. rlhe forepart as well as the shank may not only be lasted, but the outsole laid thereon in what amounts to substantially a single operation. Not only are the lasting and sole laying operations, therefore, performed in a simple and expeditious manner, but a close and desirable conformation of the upper `to the last may be secured. The mechanism is not only simple in construction, but effective and efficient in its action.
' Upon reference to Figs. 1 and 2 it will b seen that the mounting of the guide or support 17 and the arrangement of the carrier and wiper are such as to facilitate the lasting operation. The lasting element can b e swung horizontally about 100 so as to positionthe wiper tip in proper relation with respect to the last and the upper thereon and by means of the frictional device Figs. 4 and 5, the wiper is maintained in its adjusted position; for this friction device is connected with the screw 18 on which the wiper is mounted and, therefore, restrains movement of this screw and wiper about the pivot formed by the screw 12. The wiper can, however, be adjusted on its carrier not only about a vertical axis, but also aboutY a horizontal axis in order to position `its inner edge to correspond withV the outline of the shoe while the wiper sections automatically adjust themselves to the last bottom. The wiper can then be moved inward to wipe the upper over the last and by reference to Fig. 2 it will be seen that this is a direct inward movement in a straight line along the guide 17 whereby the upper will be smoothly and uniformly wiped over the last. On account of the vertical adjustment of the outer end of the guide or support, the inclination of Vthe wiper with respect to the last bottom can be adjusted to meet requirements. The weight 21 not only serves to hold the wiper yieldingly on the upper while it is being wiped thereover, but the wiper carrier, the weight and the wiper on the carrier can be readily elevated by manipulation of the treadle. y
By mounting the guide 17 at its outer end laterally of the last in the manner described, the inner end of this guide is arranged to bep-pointed'onselected parts of the last; on account of theuniversal pivotal mounting of the outer end of the guide the inner end can be moved both vertically and horizontally s'o'as to secure practically universal pointing with respect to the last and the upper thereon. In view of the fact that the lasting element carrier is movable along the guide between this mounting and the last, the operative mechanism can be arranged inside of the mounting so that adjustments will not only be facilitated but the placement of the wipers on selected parts of the upper can be readily secured. The frictional holding devices are arranged to hold the guide firmly but yieldingly in any position of adjustment.
vWhile the invention is particularly applicable to lasting a specifictype of shoe,-it is to be understoodthat the same is merely illustrative of one embodiment of this invention; for this Vinvention is applicable for the lasting of other types of shoes. It will, furthermore', be understood that some of the features, mechanisms, operations and subcombinations are of utility and may be employed without reference to other features, mechanisms, operations and sub-combinations; that is contemplated by 'and is within the scope of the'appen'ded claims. It is further 'obvious' that various changes may be made in details of construction and operation, within the scope of the appended claims, without departingfrom the spirit of this invention; it is, therefore, to be understood that this invention is not to be limited to the details shown and/or described.
' Having thus described the invention what is claimed is: f 1.*In a lasting machine having a jack for a last, a wiper carrier, rand a wiper thereon adapted toywipe the upper over the last, said wiperbeing adjustable to and conformed to the last bottom along the forepart and shank and constructed and mounted on said carrier to lie close to the last bottom in order to permit placement thereover of a sole, and means for positioning said wiper with the inside edge thereof in ksuch relation with the edges of the wiped over upper as to permit tacks to be driventhrough the sole and into the lasted upper while this upper is held under tension due to the wiping, said wiper being adapted for withdrawal while the upper is held by the tacks so driven.
2. In a lasting machine having a jack for a last, a wiper carrier, and a wiper thereon adapted to wipe the Lipper over the last, said wiper being conformed tothe last bottom along the forepart and shank and constructed and mounted on said carrier to lie close to the last bottom in order to permit placement thereover of a sole, the tip of said wiper having tack receiving recesses adapted to receive the tacks driven' through the sole and into the lasted upper whilethis upper is held rassegne-Y under tension due to the-wiping, said wiperbeing adapted for withdrawal while the upper is held by the tacks sodrivein 3. Ina lasting machine having a jack for a last, a carrier having a wiper thereon, a weight connected with said carrier and mounted to press said wiper on the shoe, means for mounting said carrier for free movement in order to adjust said wiper relative to the last, means for adjusting said s carrier'about a vertical axis, means for adjusting said carrier about an axis extending towards the last, and means for moving said weight and wiper towards the shoe in order to move said wiper thereover yto last the upper.
16. In a lasting machine havinga jack for a last, a support, a. guide directed towards the last and pivoted on said support :tor free vertical movement at its inner end, a weighted carrier mounted on said guide, a wiper on said carrier, and means for moving said carriery along said guide. f
17. In a lasting machine having a. jack for a last, a support having a pivot mounted laterally of the last to permit said support to Vswing horizontally and vertically, a carrier thereon having a wiper directed towards the last and with its tip on a suiiiciently long radius to move in a substantially straight line along the last when said support is swung horizontally, means for moving said carrier along said support to move the wiper over the last, and means for raising said support. In a lasting machine having a jack for a last, a guide directed crosswise of the last, a pivot for mounting the outer end ofsaid guid-e laterally of the last so as to swing horizontally and vertically at its inner end, and a. lasting element carrier movable along said guide between said mounting means and the last7 said pivot being placed laterally of the jack a distance sufficient to cause said lasting element to move along the last when said guide is swung horizontally.

In a. lasting machine having a jack for a last, a guide directed crosswise of the last, a pivot for mounting the outer end of said guide laterally of th-e last so as to swing horizontally at its inner end, means for adjusting the outer end of said guide, and a lasting element carrier movable along said guide between said mounting means and the last, said pivot being placed laterally of the jack a distance sufficient to cause said lasting element to move along the last when said guide is swung horizontally.

In a lasting machine having a jack for a last, a guide directed crosswise of the last, a pivot for mounting the outer end of said guide laterally of the last so as to swing horizontally and vertically at its inner end, means whereby the outer end of said guide may be adjusted horizontally and vertically, and a lasting element carrier movable along said guide between said mounting means and the last, said pivot being placed laterally of the jack a distance sufficient to cause said lasting element to move along the last when said guide is swung horizontally.

In a lasting machine havlng a Jack for Y a last, a guide directed crosswise of the last, a pivot for mounting the outer end of said guide laterally of the last so as to swing horizontally at its inner end, a carrier movable along said guide between said mounting means and the last, and a lasting element mounted for adjustment on said carrier.

In a` lasting machine having a jack for a last, a guide, a vertical pivot for mounting said guide laterally of the last and on a long radius adapted to permit said guide to be pointed on selected parts of the last, a lasting element carrier movable along said guide between said pivot means and the last, and means for holding said gui-de in selected positions, said pivot being placed laterally of the jack a distance suiicient to cause said lasting element to move along the last when said guide is swung horizontally.
