Description

4 l, Il f llliihllllliiilli F.FORMANECK THERAPEUTIC HEATING APPLIANCE Filed Jan. 13, 1930 Dec. 8, 1931.
Patented Dec. 8, 1931 UNITED sTATEsf THERAPEUTIC HEATING APPIJANCE Application led January 13, 1980. Serial No. 420,386.
uniform heating effect and also adapted for` ready and effective vattachment in place on the person of a party using the same, all as will hereinafter more fully appear.
In the accompanying drawings: Fig. 1 is a sectional elevation on line 1-1,
Fig. 2, of an electric heating appliance embodying this invention.
Fig. 2 is a section on line 2 2, Fig. 1 of the same.
Like reference numerals indicate like parts in both views.
In the preferred form of this invention, the enclosing shell or housing has the form of a shallow shell comprising a circular wall l and dished top and bottom Walls 2 and 3,
with the dished bottom wall 3 in connection with a lower marginal rim 4 of the wall 1 providing an open bottom receiving chamber 5 the roof of which is of a sphero-concave form for a medicated pad or other form of medicv amental substance intended for use in local treatment of various parts of thc human body. In the present construction the upper marginal rim or seam 6 of the wall 1 is formed with a plurality of slits or orifices 7 to receive a tape or bandage by means of which the appliance is secured in place on the part of the person using the same.
Arranged centrally in the interior of the enclosing shell or casing of the appliance, is an electrical heating unit of the resistance type. preferably of a construction as follows:
A pair of outer circular sheets 8 and 9 of non-'electric material, usually mica, in separated relation, provides a protecting enclosure for an inner core 10 of non-electric material, usually mica, whichcore is formed into a pair of opposed semi-circular sections, with the opposed curved and straight margins thereof formed with a plurality of notches 11 in spaced relation, and into which the windings of the resistance wire 12 is engaged and held in proper relation one to the other as illustrated in Fig. 2.
The above mentioned electrical resistance wire 12, by which the heating of the appliance 53 is effected, will usually be formed of the well known nichrolne alloy, and in a ten watt element will contain nine feet #43 B. S. gauge, of such wire, and in a fifteen watt element will contain a like nine feet #45 B. S. gauge, 60 of said wire. The resistance wire windings 12 on the respective semi-circular sections of the core 11 are in seriesLwith the respective terminal ends of such windings electrically connected to the line wires of an ordinary flexible conducting cord 13, which is employed to conduct the electromotive force from a Wall socket or the like to the present appliance.
As usual in portable electrical appliances of this and other types the flexible conducting cord 13 will be substantially anchored by a holding bushing 14, in the wall 1 of the appliance, with a View to avoid accidental and injurious strain on the heating unit in actual use of the appliance.
All vacant spaces vin the interior of the appliance are preferably filled with a mass 15 of loose asbestos.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim, is
1. In an electrical heating appliance of the type herein described, the combination of a closed containing housing formed with a dished bottom wall providing a containing cavity the roof of which is of a sphere-concave form, a medicament carrying means in said cavity, an electric heating unit arranged within the housing adajacent to said bottom wall, and a flexible conducting cord attached to the wall of the appliance with its line wire connected to the terminals of the electric heating unit.
2. In an electrical heating ap liance of the type herein described, the com ination of a closed containing housing formed with a dished bottom wall providing a containing cavity the roof of which is of a sphero-concave form, a medicament carrying means in said cavity, an electric heatlng unit arranged within the housing adjacent to said bottom 10 Wall and 'comprising a pair of 4round nonelectric sheets in spaced relation, a nonelectric sheetfor core arranged between said outer sheets, and a resistance wire wound upon said core or sheet, and a flexible conducting cord attached to the wall of the appliance v with its line wires connected to the terminals of the electrical heating unit.
3. In an electrical heating appliance of the type herein described, the combination of a closed containing housing formed with a dished bottom wall providing a containing cavity the roofof which is of a sphero-concave form, a medicament carrying means in said cavity, an electric heating unit arranged within the housing adjacent to said bottom Wall and comprising a pair of round nonelectric sheets in spaced relation, a nonelectric sheet or core arranged between said outer sheets and formed into a pair of semicircular sectionsthe-opposed edges of which are formed with a series of notches` a resistance wire wound upon said sections and hav-` ing holding` engagement in the notches, and a flexible conducting cord attached to the wall' of the appliance with its line wires connected to the terminals ofthe electrical heating unit. 4. In an electric heating appliance of the type herein described, the combination of a closed containing housing formed with dished top and bottom walls, the dished bottom wall providing a containing cavity the roof of which is of a sphere-concave form, a medicament carrying means in said cavity, an electric heating unit arranged within the housing adjacent to said bottom wall,` and a flexible conducting cord attached to a wall of the appliance with its line wires connected to the terminals of the electric heating unit,
the seam between the side and the top wall of thehousing having slits for engagement with an attaching tape or bandage.
5. In an electric heating appliance of the type herein described, thecombination of a closed containing housing formed with dished top and bottom Walls, the dished bottom wall providing a containing cavity the roof of which is of a sphero-concave form., a medicament carrying means in said cavity, an`electric heating unit arranged within the housing adjacent to said bottom wall and comprising a pair of round non-electric sheets in spaced relation, anon-electric sheet or core arranged between said outer sheets, a resistance wire wound upon said sheet or core, and a flexible conducting cord attached to a wall of the appliance with its line wires connected to the terminals of the electrical heating unit, the seam between the side and the top wall of the housing having slits for engagement with an attaching tapeV or bandage.-V
lIn testimony whereof I hereunto ailix my signature.
