SAFETY SWINGING POST FORv MAIL BOXES Filed Aug. 4, 1930 wmqass; i ATToRNgv Patented Dec. 1, 1931 UNITED STATES ROY n. HALL, or LYoNs, NEBRASKA SAFETY SWINGING POST FORJILAL BOXES Application filed August 4,
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in supports found particularly applicable for rural free delivery mail boxes and the like.
One of the principal objects of the invention consists of a support of this character designed to normally dispose the mail box over and outwardly beyond the usual drainage ditch at the roadside.
Another object of the invention contemplates the provision and arrangement of means for yieldingly maintaining the boX in the position stated.
An additional object of the invention embodies a mea-ns of adjustment for the box by means of which the latter may be adjusted to positions found suitable to the postman and recipient.
With the above and other objects in View, the invention further consists of the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claim.
ln the drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of the present invention. Y
Figure 2 is a horizontal sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is an enlarged detail sectional view taken through one of the several journals upon the support.
Figure 4 is a horizontal sectional view taken on line A-t of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a sectional view taken on line 5-5 of Figure 4.
Referring to the drawings in detail wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the reference character 10 indicates generally a standard or support,
preferably of tubular formation and suitably anchored within the ground by concrete or the like. A cap member 11 for the uppermost open end of the tubular support 10, is provided with a reduced Xtension 12 telescopically positioned and ournally associated within the uppermost end of the tubular support, in the manner best illustrated in Figure 3 of the drawings. A sleevevmember 13, telescopically associated for rocking motion 1930. Serial N0. 472,845.
Aand beyond the tubular extension l2, has
formed thereon an eye 15, swivelly associated with the eye 16, formed upon the adjacent end of an adjusting rod 17 t-he purpose of the latter mentioned rod will be better understood in the following description of the invention.
A supporting` arm 18, provided with a clevis 19 upon its innermost end is designed to accommodate the trunnions 2O outwardly projecting from diametrically opposite sides of the sleeve 18 in the manner shown in Figure 2 of the drawings and from which position the supporting rod may be raised and lowered. An adjusting sleeve 21, slidably mounted upon the supporting arm 18, is provided with a set screw 22 designed for biting engagement with the supporting arm 18 to sustain the latter at any desired height. The remaining end of the adjusting rod 17 is shaped to provide an eye 28 passed through an apertured ear 24 upon the adjusting sleeve 21.
The mail box or other receptacle, such as indicated at 25, is mounted upon the upper side of a rod member 26, extensively associated with the outermost projecting end of the supporting arm 18 by means of which the mail box or receptacle 25 may project S5 outwardly over the highway, beyond the drainage ditch, for distances found most convenient to the postman and recipient.
A cross pin 28, carried by the standard 10, has one end outwardly projected therefrom for disposition within a groove 29, horizontally disposed within the body of the sleeve 18 and wholly obscured. from View. Compression springs 30, arranged within the groove 29 and sprung at their ends against the end walls of the channel and the opposed sides of the projecting xtremity of the cross pin 28, serve to normally and yieldingly position the mail box in position, shown in Figure 1 of the drawings. A stop collar 81, 10o
l adjustably positioned upon the standard 10, is designed for abutting engagement with the lower periphery of the sleeve 13 to provide a support` for thelatter by means of 5. which the bearing strain may be equalized upon'both the cap ll vand sleeve 13.
From the foregoing, it is understood that the mail box may be shiftedlateral-lyand at right angles to the position shown 1in Figure l of thedrawings and in either direction to permit the recipient to remove themailjfrom the box or to permit the passingjof a ditch digger, road scraper, hay YWagon.. andthe like Without incurringany injury to the mail box 15 or the support structuretherefor or in any Way oering an obstruction to traiiic.
` The invention is susceptible of Vvarious l changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is hereinreserved to 'makel such changes as properly `fall Within the scope ofthe appended claim.
Having described the invention, what is i "claimed is: y. Y
vA mail box support comprising a tubular standard, a cap mountedk for turning movel ment in the upper end of the" standard, a sleeve mounted for turning movement upon the standard at a point spaced below the cap, a rod connected at its opposite ends with the cap' and the sleeve respectively and having an intermediate portion in spaced parallel relation to thev standard,`a box supporting Yarm connected With the sleeve, a brace connecting said'arm with the upper end of said rod and springs located interiorly of the sleeve and engaging a stop member upon the standard. to hold the arm at a normal position.
