This invention relates to improvements in foldable beds of the roll'about type and more particularly to a. novel head board construction for such beds.

' An object of this invention is to provide in a bed of the character described a foldable head board which in a particularly efficient manner will be automatically moved into folded relation to the bed frame upon folding or Lip-ending the latter.

Another object is to provide a foldable head board of the character described in which the automatic folding of said board may be brought about through the simple expedient of arranging portions of the means for hin 'edly mounting the board on the bed frame to have a cam-like engagement with portions of the bed frame supporting truck during the up-ending of the frame.

A further object is to provide a head board arrangement of the character described in which the board is disposed in rearwardly offset hinged relation to a fixed upstanding head piece at the head of the bed frame and thereby provides for an increase in head room or bed length, added space for bedding and pillows and the convenient folding of the board over said bedding and pillows.

Still another object is to provide a head board of the character described which as a result of the engagement of the board with the truck will act to check or prevent the back tilting or toppling over tendency which is likely to occur if the bed frame is too forcibly or suddenly moved into its upended position.

The invention possesses other objects and features of advantage, some of which, witli the foregoing, will be set forth in the following description of the preferred form of the invention which is illustrated in the drawings accompanying and forming part of the specification. It is to be understood. however, that variations in the showing made by the said drawings and description may be adopted within th scope of the invention as set forth in the claims.

In its present embodiment the head board construction of my invention is incorporated with a foldable roll-about bed here shown as comprising an upendable bed frame 5 0011- nected with a wheeled supporting truck 6 through the medium of front and rear links 7 and 8 whereby the bed frame may be moved from upended to extended position and vice versa. I

' Specifically, the head board arrangement includes a fixed upstanding head piece 9 secured in any suitable manner to the headend of the bed frame and a foldable head board 10 secured by means .of hinges 11 to the upper edge of said head piece. .With this arrange ment, provision is made for conveniently employing the hinges as af'meansfor causing the automatic folding operation and other advantages of the. invention, inasmuch as it is only necessary to arrange the board carrying portions of the hinges in rearwardly offset relation to the upper end of the head piece) and in such position that said hinge portions will engage a part of the truck when the bed frame is being moved into upended position whereby owing to such engagement the head board will be folded upward to lie substan tially parallel with the bed frame. (lonsequently, ashere shown, the hinges 11 are sub stantially L shaped and the normally horiz'ontal legs 14 thereof are at their free ends pivoted as at 15 to the upper edge ofthe head piece 9 in such manner that'the vertical legsv 16 Carrying the head board are with the lat; ter disposed in rearwardly offset relation to said head piece. On the legs 1d of the hinges and on the head piece 9a're coacting stop lugs 17 and 18 respectively which prevent rearward and downward swinging of the head board past its upright normal position shown in Figure 1, it being noted that by force of gravity the board will be reliably maintained in such position while the bed is in position of use.

It will now be seen that with the bed in position of use as shown in Figure l, the bedding indicated at A will lie close to the plane of the upper edge of the head piece 9 Whereas the pillows B may be disposed back against the rearwardly offset head board and by this arrangement greater head room or bed length is provided for the occupant of the bed. Furthermore, when it is desired to upend the bed frame the board may be con veniently folded over the bedding and pillows owing to the ofiset hinge arrangement and the resultant greater spacing for the bedding and pillows provided between the folded overboard and bed frame.

On the folding or upending of the bed frame, the legs 14 of the hinges 11 will, as shown in Figure 2, engage with the upper edges of a cross member 19 on the truck in such manner that the board will be forced to swing upward and inward into folded position lying parallel to the frame, this position being maintained by the engagement of the hinges with said truck cross piece. Preferably the cross member engaging faces of the hinge legs 14 are inclined or beveled to facilitate the cam or leverage action which. folds up the board.

It is to be noted that the head board may be folded over manually but if this is nege lected the folding will take place automatically and owing to the comparatively great space between the board when folded and the bedding, the presence of relatively thick bedding and pillows will not interfere with said automatic folding operation.

Further, it will be evident that owing to the manner in which the hinges 11 of the head board engage with the cross member 19 of the truck when the bed is moved into upended position, the back tilting or toppling over tendency is efiectively checked or prevented.

I claim:

1. In a foldable bed, a support, a foldablebed frame mounted on the support. a foldable head board, hinge means operatively connecting the board with the frame, and a member on the support arranged to engage the hinge means and thereby automatically fold the board 'upon folding the frame.

2. In a foldable bed, a support and foldable bed frame on the support, a head piece fixed to the head. end of the frame, a foldable head board and a hinge member connecting the board with said piece and arranged to engage a part of the truck so as to swing the board into folded position upon folding the frame.
