Description

Dc. 1, 1931. ABRAHAM 1,834,013
HAND GRIP CONTROL FOR AIRCRAFT Filed April 29, 1931 flllomey 23 24 g IIWCfItOI' Patented Dec. 1, 1931 LEWIS-ABRAHAM, OF PORTSMOUTH, VIRGINIA HAND GRIP CONTROL FOR AIRCRAFT Application filed-April B9, 1981. Serial No. 538,824.
, This invention relates to a control for the throttle valve of the carbureter of an internal combustion engine and more particularly for the type of engine or motor as is em-' 5 ployed in aircrafts.
A primary object of this invention is to provide a control means for the valve of the carbureter adapted for use upon and in conjunction with the control or joystick of the aeroplane.
Other ob'ects and advantages of the invention, an the nature of the invention will be best understood from a study of the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a lower portion of the joy or control stick of an aeroplane having my invention applied thereto.
2 Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through the joy or control stick for clearly show g the control mechanism as applied thereto.
Figure 3 is a horizontal transverse sectional view taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Fi re 2.
With re erence more in detail to the draw ings, it will be seen that 5 designates the control or joy stick of the aeroplane, and the same at its lower end is provided with a fork 6. The fork 6 straddles the usual r-: tary shaft 7 provided therefor and journalled in suitable bearings 8. The fork 6 is pivoted to the rotary shaft -7 as at 9.
In carrying out my invention, I provide for the upper end of the joy stick a hand ip which consists of a substantially cylini'ical casing 10 of metal or any suitable material and provided with. an outer covering 40 11 of rubber or other suitable material. The casing 10 of the hand ip is rotatable about the axis of the joy stici 5 and the lower end of the casing 10 is supported on an annular collar 12 provided exteriorly of the stick 5. The stick 5 is of hollow construction, and has rotatable thereina control rod 13 journalled in verticall spaced bearings 14 provided interiorly o the stick 5.
The upper end of the stick 13 is integral with or otherwise secured to the upper end of the hand grip casing 10, while the lower end of the rod 13 extends through a suitable opening provided in the rotary shaft 7 and elongated longitudinally.
The lower end of the rod 13 is bifurcated and at said end is pivotally connected to a wrist pin 15 journalled between the ends of a fork 16. The shank of the fork 16 extends through a slot 17 provided in the bottom of the shaft 7 and is journalled in abearing 18 provided on the upper end of a substantially C-shaped bracket 19 that is secured at its lower end to a part of the frame 20 of the aeroplane structure.
The free end of the shank of the fork is .bent laterally to provide a horizontal end portion 21 to the terminus of which is pivot ally connected as at- 22 a fork 23 provided on the end of a flexible operating element 24 that is suitably connected with the throttle valve of the carbureter, (not shown).
As is conventional. the element 24 is encased in a flexible sheathing 25 suitably supported as at 26 adjacent thebracket 19.
From what has been hereinbefore stated, it is apparent that upon rotating the hand grip, the rod 13 will be rotated for transmitting movement to the shank of the fork 16 thus actuating the control element 24 to operate the throttle valve for controlling the speed of the motor of the aeroplane.
To prevent casual rotation of the rod 13, and thus retain the throttle valve at the desired adjustment, there is keyed to the rod 13 a toothed wheel 27 and a manually operable locking bolt 28 is slidable radially through a lateral openin provided in the stick 5 and at its inner end is provided with a tooth for engaging the teeth of the wheel 27 to thereby lock the rod 13 against rotative movement.
The locking bolt 28 may be secured in engagement with the teeth of the wheel 27 or retained out of engagement therewith to any a suitable means, such as a sprin pressed ball provided in a socket 29 exterior y of the stick 5 and engageable with a selected one of a plurality of recesses provided in the bolt 28 as at 30.
Even though I have herein shown and described the preferred embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that the same is susceptible of changes, modifications and improvements within the scope of the appended claims. Having thus descrlbed my invention, what I claim as new is:
1. In a throttle valve control, a control stick of an aircraft, a hand grip therefor and shiftable relative to the longitudinal axis 10 of the control stick, manual means for re-- taining the hand ip against casual rotation and valve contro means having operative connection with said hand grip.
2. In combination, a rotary shaft, a fork 15 straddling the shaft and pivotallIy; connected thereto an airplane control stic connected to the ork, a control rod rotatably mounted in said stick and having an end extending into said rotary shaft, a fork arranged in go said rotary shaft and having operative connection with the said end of said rod, said fork including a shank extending through a slot in the shaft, a bearing extcricrlyof said shaft for said shank, an throttle valve 5 control means having operative connection with said shank.
3. In combination, a rotary shaft, a fork straddling the shaft and pivotally connected thereto an airplane control stick connected.
30 to the fork, a control rod rotatably mounted in said stick and havin an end extending into said rotary shaft, a ork arranged in said rotary shaft and having 0 erative connection with the said end of sai rod, said fork in- 5 cludingla shank extending through a slot in the s aft, a bearin extenorly of said shaft for said shank, an throttle' yalvecontrol means having operative connection with said shank, ahand gri rotatable on the control so stick and connecte to said rod for impartin rotary movement to said rod, and manu means for securing said rod at the desired fixed adjustment.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
