IMPROVEMENT IN PORTABLE FENCES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 183,] 70, dated October 10, 1876; application filed September 2, 1876.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SAMUEL O. HURLEY, of Danville, in the county of Vermillion and State of Illinois, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Portable Fences; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.

Figure l of the drawings is a representation of a front elevation of my portable fence, and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 8 is a front elevation, part sectional, of my portable fence; and Fig. 4. is a plan view, part sectional, thereof. Fig. 5 is a detail View taken through line .70 w of Fig. 3.

This invention relates to improvements in portable fences; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of the devices hereinafter described and claimed.

In the annexed drawings, A A designate fence-sections, each of which consists of horizontal slats or rails a a, and vertical battens a a connecting the same. The number of said slats and battens may be varied, as desired. Said fence-sections A A are detachably hinged together in the following manner: Between the upper rail or and one of the end battens a is secured the strap b of a vertical loop or eye, B, forming the knuckle of a hinge. A similar loop or eye, B, is similarly secured by its strap b between the lower rail of the same section and the same batten. To the contiguous end of the upper rail or slat a of section A, and between said rail and the batten there attached, I fasten one end of a bent rod or hook O, the outer end of which is bent so as to enter said eye or loop B from above. Another bent rod or hook, G, is similarly secured between the lower rail or slat of section A, and the lower end of the batten there attached. These hooks, with the eyes or loops above described, constitute the hinges of said sections. Said lower hook or bent rod is provided at its outer end with a vertical downward extension, 0, which passes through eye B into a socket or recess in the top of a block, D. Said rod or hook is thus adapted to secure the said sections to said supportingblock, as well as to attach them together. The contiguous corners of said sections rest upon said block, instead of upon hinges, in the usual manner of gates, thereby preventing injury to the hinges when said sections are used as gates. The other end of section A is provided with hooks 0r bent rods similar to those above described, and the other end of section A is provided with loops or eyes similar to those above described.

This construction is continued in every section of the fence, so that every alternate section may be used as a gate.

E E designate braces, which are put through between the lower rails or slats of said sections A A, and driven into the ground to aid in sustaining the same. The inner ends of the said bent rods or hooks are secured more firmly by means of small barbs c c, which catch in the-wood of the fence, and prevent them from being withdrawn. Straps b b are let into the upright battens for the purpose of allowing said straps to be held more securely.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

In combination with adjoining fence-panels having an upper hinge connection, the lower hinge connection consisting of the angular or bent rod 0, having extension 0, which passes through eye B of strap 1) into a socket or recess in block D, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
