This invention relates to a pump, the present invention being an improvement over that forming the subject matter of a patent issued to JohnM. Vawter, dated May 22, 1928, No. 1,670,944.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction and operation of the patented pump.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure l is an elevation of the invention.
Figure 2 is a view of the opposite side thereof.

Figure 4 is a section on line 44 of Figure 3.
Figure 5 is a section on line 5-5 of Figure 3.
Figure 6 is a. detail sectional view of the check valve at the end of the pipe leading from the bottom of the vacuum chamber.
In these drawings, the numeral 1 indicates a base for supporting the various parts of the device and said base has an opening 2 therein through which a portion of the valve cylinder 3 passes. A frame 4: is bolted to one end of the base as shown at 5, this frame being of' substantially U shape in plan and has a cylindrical part 6 projecting from its bight for receiving one end of the pump cylinder 7 The cylinder abuts an upwardly extending flange 8 in the cylindrical part 6 and the other end of the pump cylinder fits in an annular space formed by a flange 9 on the valve cylinder 3.
Perforated projecting parts 10 are also formed with the cylinder and rods 11 pass through the perforations in these parts and through holes in the bight of the frame at, these rods being threaded to receive nuts 12 so that by tightening the nuts, the cylinder 7 can be held in a water and air-proof manner against the valve cylinder. A gasket 13 is placed between the valve cylinder and the pump cylinder.
A piston 14: is arranged in the cylinder 7 and is connected by the rod 15 with the crankof a shaft 16 journaled in the outer end of-the frame 1 andhaving a pulley 17 :at one end thereof over which passes abelt .18 which also passes over a pulley 19'on amotor M. This motor is fastened to that end of the base which is opposite that :endto which the frame 4 is fastened and the bolts 20 which connect the motor to, -the base pass through elongatedv holes 21 in the base so that the motor can be adj ustedto tightenthe belt. The connectingrod 15 is formed of two parts which are adjustably connected together, as shown.
A pair of removable valve seats22 is arranged ini-the cylinder 3, one aboveand one below the point of communication of said with thetop of the valve chamber and a discharge pipe 26 is connected with the lower part of the chamber 25. A pipe 27 is-connected withthe lower end of the valve chamher and :passes tothe well or other supply from which the water is to be pumped. A
'checkvalve 28 is arranged in the pipe 27 and a hose 29, having a cock 30-atitslower end, is connected with-the intermediate part ofnthe valve chamber.
' A :cylindrlical casing 31 is connected by :a pipe'32 with the'bottom of the valve chamber and said pipe communicates with the casing substantially midway the length ofithe same. Said casing: :is formed with ianopening in its'top normally closed by aplug 33vand pipes 34 are eonpledtogether withoneendin com- -:munication with the bottom of the casing 31. These pipes are so arranged that they form an inverted U 35, the :bight of which extends above the central part :of the casing 31, with the outer limb 'ofthe U containing a cock 36 and a-ball valve 37. This valve normallyrests upon a. seat 38 inthe discharge end of the pipe line 34 and when lifted, will engage the notched lower end of a sleeve 39 so that air can pass the ball when in raised position. This sleeve is held in adjusted position by a sleeve 40 threaded in the upper end of the short pipe ll which is threaded into the cock 36 and forms the outer end of the line 34.

Thus it will be seen that the suction stroke of the piston 1 k in the cylinder 7 will draw.
liquid through the pipe 27 past the valve 2% into the pump cylinder and the central part of the valve cylinder and then on the other stroke of the piston, this water will be forced past the top valve 24 into thechamber 25, from which it will pass to the point of use through the pipe 26. During the pumping operation, some of the water will pass from the lower part of the valve cylinder through the pipe 32 into the casing 31, andas described in the before mentioned patent, a partial vacuum is caused in the upper portion of the casing 31 and such vacuum aids the pump to operate without undue pounding. The lower part of the casing 31 constitutes a water trap. lVhen the pump is stopped, the vacuum in the upper portion of the casing tends to draw water into said upper portion so that the water level, when the pump ceases to operate, is above the pipe 32. If it is necessary to prime the pump,
due to the piston parts or the valves drying out to some extent or for any other reason, by opening the cook 36, air will pass through the line at, as such air will raise the valve 1 37 off its seat and this air, entering the casing 31, will break the, vacuum so that the water above the pipe 32 can flow through said pipe 7 into the pump and thus prime the same.
' It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of the invention will be readily apparent.
It is to be understood that changes may be made in the construction and in the combination and V arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scone of the appended claims.
What I claim is r 1. In combination with a pump including the casing, a cock in the other limb of the U-shaped pipe, a check valve normally closing the lower end of said limb but moving to open position when the cock is opened so that air can enter the vacuum casing.
2. In combination with a pump including a valve cylinder and a pump cylinder having a piston therein in communication with the valve cylinder, a supply pipe connected with the lower end of the valve cylinder, a vacuum 1'5 casing connected intermediate its ends with the lower part of the valve cylinder whereby water from the valve cylinder will enter the lower part of the vacuum casing and the vacuum 1n the upper part of the casing will cause the water to rise above its point of connection with the valve cylinder, a U- shaped pipe having one limb connected with the bottom of the vacuum casing and its bight extending above the water level of thecasing, a cock in the other limb of the U- shaped pipe, a check valvenormally closing the lower end of said limb but moving to open position when the cock is opened so that air can enter the vacuum casing and an adjustable sleeve in the limb above the check valve and having notches in its lower end.
